It’s been a big few months for PlayStation VR with the release of acclaimed games like Farpoint, SUPERHOT VR, and Tiny Trax – all of which have scored highly here at Push Square. And pushed for an update on the peripheral, outspoken Sony bigwig Jim Ryan has noted that the device is “going really well” – even exceeding the organisation’s expectations in some area.
“We’re nine months in now, and we’ve sold over one million sets,” he told German channel Inside PlayStation. “There are 100 virtual reality experiences already in the market, which is an amazing number – it’s way ahead of anything we were expecting. On average, people with PlayStation VR are buying about five games. So, it’s a really healthy ecosystem building between these bitesized titles and the larger releases like Resident Evil 7.”
Ryan hinted that there’s much more to come for Sony’s virtual reality headset, but wouldn’t be drawn on specifics. It’s fair to assume that we’ll be seeing a lot more PlayStation VR content at the company’s Paris Games Week press conference later in the year, however – especially with a number of its European studios hard at work on the device.

Crossing my fingers for a good sale come Xmas-time so I can finally justify buying one.
I honestly thought the tag line said "Sony bullsh*t on headsets success"
That's the crucial, thing with people worrying that Sony won't support it but if the company are happy then they will. It's just people still need to be realistic at the kind of games we'll get.
@FaultyDroid Haha!
Pretty wide selection of software for it which is good news, I feel there is a lack of 'killer apps' at the moment though so hopefully they are working on some games to address that.
Could be something fun to discuss on the next podcast.
Is the Pushsquare podcast still going @get2sammyb ?
Just noticed they haven't put anything out recently.
Yeah I was wondering about the podcast too. Hate when podcasts just stop or get delayed without any notice when I've been looking forward to them. Not that I've any real right to complain. They're free after all.
I'm gearing up toward getting one
@Dange @LieutenantFatman Here's an update from Ben and Ben that was posted on Twitter recently: https://twitter.com/pushsquarepod/status/894151838605430789
On topic - really pleased to hear PSVR is doing well
I'm glad it's been going well! I've had my headset since day 1, and even now, quite a few months on, whenever I hop into my headset, I still love it. Can't wait to see what other games are coming up the pipeline in the future!
For me, VR is amazing. I've been gaming for well over 30 years and it's some of the best experiences I've had in games.
5 games on average? Everyone I know of and also on the subreddit are notoriously buying games and experiences like hot butter cookies. I must have around 20 PSVR games about now ... and I'm in no way the only one.
But yes, good to hear that more is up - can't wait for Skyrim VR! Hopefully Ubisoft or some other giant is working on a Farpoint like experience but Modern Warfare style - that would sell crazy, IMHO!
@Furtin When I finally buy mine, I will most certainly end up buying at least 30. But there are a lot of people who buy such things and don't do anything with them. I've seen people on this very site who mentioned buying two move controllers that they never even used (and no games, of course).
People are weird.
I find if I have a week or two where I don't use VR, I'm just blown away by it all over again when I get back into it.
I was worried about getting VR cause of motion sickness but aside from one or two games (I am looking at you driveclub and star wars battlefront) I have been fine. It really is a mind blowing experience and as Sammy said, it still wows me from time to time
Still on the fence.
@get2sammyb Same here. I can go ages without playing it but when I do it is like oh so this is why I spent all that dosh.
I am still happy with my purchase, heading into nearly a year.
Im dying to get it. Its great to see some real full on games making their way onto it though like resident evil and soon skyrim!!! Omg vr skyrim!!! Ill probably have to cave for that
@Quintumply Thanks dude, I don't use the Tweeter so missed that news. Hope all is OK with the two Gents.
I still want one, but still can't justify the cost = was hoping for a more involved GT Sport experience with it. It still looks like it will be a fantastic experience, but still not something I want to invest in. More so considering my G27 won't be supported still.
Im glad its going well for them, bodes well for the future, not really interested in it this gen personally, but im glad Sony have continued to support it
Just got mine today. Loving it so much so far. Only played danganronpa, spiderman and until dawn rush of blood, plus a few YouTube videos. Absolutely loving it. Have a stack of other titles to check out too 😊
The number of cables mind...wow its insane!
Big fan of PSVR, wasn't overly concerned if the interest would wane after a few weeks or months but it did cross my mind that it may before purchase. That thought wasn't gonna stop me investing in something I've wanted since watching the Lawnmower Man.
Had it since day one and still love it. Still get that holodeck wow factor and it's been almost a year now. Definitely feel like it needs another big new release like Resident Evil 7 mind. Is GT-Sport that game? I guess Skyrim VR is a big one but that's quite an old game and just doesn't grab me like Resi did.
Im still holding out for No Man's Sky VR patch/DLC.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
Agree with you. A lot of games but little 'noise' from the mainstream press. Even Metacritic doesn't have a VR section yet....
I bought mine about 4 months ago. Best gaming purchase I've made since the PS1. (Ps2 /3/4 were natural continuity purchases).
If anyone is on the fence, has the £££ and loves gaming it really is a no brainer. And Sony are not dumping it. And even if they announced today that they were, I think I have enough games and experiences to consider my outlay for the device a worthwhile investment.
Good to see it doing well, had mine 2 months I enjoying a lot. Surprised attach rate only 5 games there have been some great sales recently. Got about 10 games so far and most are great.
I find it's the perfect companion for my Ps4 pro. The first months, I was SO BLOWN AWAY by the overwhelming experience that I honestly thought I would never play again a "regular" game on a TV. Then, after a few months, I found a balance in my galing habits.
Generally, it works by periods : I can play regular games on my TV for weeks, and then, one day, I ditch out my helmet and cannot take it out.
I also really like how little indy games found their places on the store, just near the AAA we all know. My favorits PSVR games so far :
Farpoint (EVERY PSVR USER NEED THIS GAME WITH THE GUN. IT'S JUST THE ULTIMATE VR EXPERIENCE. PERIOD.)
Eve Valkyrie
Batman Arkham VR
RESIDENT EVII_
REZ Infinite
Dirt Rally VR
Thumper
Oh and I became really addicted to watching 3D movies in my helmet. I set the screen size to BIG and it's Imax at home, really. Pacific Rim, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Star Wars VII were amazing in the helmet.
Did I mention I love the PSVR ? Or was it obvious ?
@Dange apparently, the Vr mode of GT sport will be more like a bonus : one on one arcade race, and that's all.
But SKYRIM VR ? Man, if they do it right, it really has the possibility to be one the best experiences of the Sony headset, old game or not.
Cause it's a complete, LONG, profound game that can plug us all in, basically, the Matrix ! Come on, a VIRTUAL WORLD ? With hundreds of characters, quests, etc... I knew that I was right, all these years, to NOT play Skyrim (was always saying "yeah, I'll do it next, after this game"). Cause my mind was waiting for this version ! Maybe it's a good bye to the real world...
Skyrim in VR !! A deep and beautifull RPG in VR !!! What crazy times are we living in !!!
@Rob_230
Get Superhot mate, blooming rocks! Need a fair bit of space though...
I have about 20 games now and love them. Took it home for the holidays and everyone loved it.
I have to admit though, I played it everyday during the first couple of months but now I use it in spits and spurts. It suits me though and when a new great game comes out like Superhot, I'm right back in.
Really looking forward to MM's Dreams though, Dreams in PSVR will be unreal!
Loving psvr, have 21 games so far, looking forward to radial-g in the next few weeks, and hopefully into the special forces beta, also hoping for SWBF2/project cars 2 vr content, and of course skyrim vr, tho gonna give doom vfr a miss, as it's tele-freakin-portation, and new improved move controllers,I even bought a gt omega wheel stand and a T150 for dirt rally/driveclub, and aim controller to add that extra layer of immersion
@MidnightManiac Will do I have heard AMAZING things about superhot.
I fired up batman last night and... well, just wow. It has completely sold me on the tech. I have never felt anything like it playing a game. Incredible stuff.
Hopefully Sony relaunch the aim controller with bravo team as its impossible to find anywhere
@Rob_230
Yeah Batman is cool. Great story. Not long enough though.
Yeah Bravo team is a must for me too. Missed out on aim due to funds at the time.
Waiting for Dirt Rally to drop in price too as looks great...
What would be good is a relaunch of home but for VR. Tried Bar room VR. First online Multilayer game I've really tried. Met a chap from Wigan and had a blast playing all the games. Great fun. Werewolves within is the next for me and if I like that I'll get Star trek.
Really commend Sony for all the support thus far. It is a game changer and compliments normal PS4 perfectly. There's definitely a future here and recommend anyone to jump on board.
@WasabiPeanut We had the PlayStation VR with the camera + 2 move controllers + VR Worlds for 405,94 EUR at different German online shops this week. So there will be sales for sure at your country soon. The headset itself was 315 Euros.
For me VR is a fantastic thing. Even bad games are good in VR so imagine how good really good games are. I really hope for PSVR 2.0 with the PS5 release with higher resolution and better tracking. But even the 1.0 model is fun as hell.
It is a great kit. I can tell you that my PS4 Pro has some significantly improved visuals, in terms of clarity and sharpness, over my OG PS4 (depending on developer support for their game of course). So for any VR enthusiasts who still have a non-pro.. the investment is well worth it. Also, the base headset has often been on sale in various sites (amazon, bestbuy, EBgames) for months here in Canada. I assume this is for an upcoming official price cut, so hopefully everyone can get this cheaper soon.
@MidnightManiac - I bought DirtRally on sale.. it was the only game beside Rigs, that made me nauseous (I do not own Driveclub tho). I didn't spend too much time with it mind you, as the feeling and the muddy, low-res feel inside the first car you get, turned me off. Many people like it though, so your mileage may vary. Also, I never tried it on my Pro, so I don't know if it runs at a higher res on it. That might help..
@Bobobiwan Skyrim will be one of the defining games for this headset. One thing I am always amazed at is the finite clarity of objects you are holding when you bring them up to your face in VR. Its like they are really there, and a marvel to see how 3d items in actual "reality". The variety of items, spells and weapons you hold will probably fascinate me for hours just looking at them all. lol
@Party_Cannon
I haven't had any issues with motion sickness yet so will probably give Dirt a go. I don't notice low res so much when I'm in there.
I have PS Pro too and agree, it does make a difference in some games but not needed as I've just spent a month back home in UK playing on OG PS4 and loved it. Can't wait to to try Super Hot on Pro though to see if there's any changes.
I'll be testing Werewolves within too, got it for free after doing a Ubisoft VR survey. Bonus!
