It’s another week of Dragon Quest XI domination on the Japanese sales charts, as Square Enix’s role-playing game racked up another 200k units across the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 – the kind of numbers most games would dream of at launch, let alone several weeks later. New releases this time on Sony’s system include Hitman and Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 – neither of which really set the charts alight.
PS4 hardware dipped week-over-week quite a bit, registering just 42k units across the entire hardware line. That said, the console is up significantly year-over-year in Japan, so no doubt Sony will be happy with its performance in the region – especially as the nation becomes increasingly mobile and handheld focused.

The PS4 version is around 8000 yen, and the 3DS version is around 6500 yen. Therefore from the sales the 3DS earned SE roughly 10,224,500,000 yen, while the PS4 earned 9,936,000,000 yen. (woohoo math)
Therefore I would wager when they said "stronger" sales on PS4 they mean higher attach rate, as the PS4 has a an attach rate of 1:5 versus the 3DS's 1:22. Or that digital sales is more on PS4, but knowing Japan it usually doesn't make much of a difference.
Still, kudos to SE for an awesome game. Hopefully the Switch also does as well as these two versions, and that we'll get all 3 when it goes West.
That aside I'm also surprised Switch sales went up. Would have thought it and the PS4 would go back to regular numbers by now.
@triforcehero Splatoon 2... nuff said
Hell it kept the Wii U relevant in Japan and Japan only
@triforcehero Or! They also took into account digital sales and they're higher on ps4.
Guess we'll find out at some point.
@naruball I also made that point; digital sales are likely to be higher on PS4 due to imports, but I'd imagine it won't make much of a preference since Japan itself isn't all that big on digital
@Derpie1 I thought they'd run into stock issues again. Guess they have it resolved for now
Aren't the PS4 sales numbers in Japan around 5 million? If so, that means 25% of the platform owners have purchased DQ XI.
Wow.
@triforcehero Didn't FFXV break some kind of record when it launched? We've seen some numbers of digital sales (thanks for Famitsu, I think) and, if memory serves, ps4 games tend to do better.
@naruball https://nowloading.co/p/final-fantasy-xv-day-one-sales-records-5-million/4158656
I did a quick search and it said FFXV "broke the record for most downloads of a game on day of release in Japan," dunno wjat the previous record is. If DQXI did well on PSN then more power to them, as long as they secure enough funds so thay we get all 3 versions then I'm a happy man.
@triforcehero Oh, that's right. That's the one I had in mind. Thanks!
Yeah, here's hoping we get all of them, though I can see only the Switch and ps4 versions making it over.
@naruball If they decide to bring the 3DS version over I could see Nintendo offering to publish it while SE takes care of PS4/Switch, since Nintendo already did the publishing for VII and VIII on 3DS. While the PS4/Switch versions will look shiny and all, I can see some retro fans wanting that pixel art style that the 3DS version has to offer
Japan still really, really loves Dragon Quest, I see. Considering how few PS4s are floating around Japan, those numbers are incredible.
capcom should've released the rockman collection on switch/3ds...would've done much better on either. 8500 copies is laughable.
@triforcehero yup. Could definitely see Ninty doing that.
@lacerz
Yes, its 5 millions
@Ralizah
Very incredible. And game is very good. Famitsu scored 40/40.
It's amazing to see square Enix release a new game lately on both handheld and console. Both gamer groups gain if they don't own the other machine. Gamers happy! Game devs happy! More profit = more growth in careers and more games! For the players 😆
@hubertuss03 Ah yes, a 40/40 from Famitsu, which puts it among such titans as Nintendogs, FFXIII-2 and NSMB Wii.
I don't doubt it's good, though. If nothing else, the game is absolutely gorgeous.
@Ralizah
Whatever
@Ralizah New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a superb game. And while Nintendogs isn't my kind of a game, you can't deny it wasn't influential.
FF13-2, though... sheer garbage.
@manu0 8500 copies physical first week is pretty good for a compilation of old games, not even remastered or remade. Japan has had access to these games for several years on different services like Virtual Console, WiiWare and PSN, even Mega Man 8. This collection will keep selling with time, it just won't do big numbers right away because there's not a big need to get the "new" thing.
