Sony has purchased a 95 per cent stake in anime distributor Funimation for $143 million, essentially acquiring the company. The remaining five per cent will be retained by current CEO Gen Fukunaga, who will continue to serve in his current role despite the takeover. In addition to selling DVDs and merchandise, Funimation recently launched a streaming service, offering over 400 favourites like Dragon Ball Z and Cowboy Bebop on-demand.
Of course, this isn’t Sony’s first foray into the world of anime: it also owns and operates the ANIMAX network, which airs in 23 countries around the globe. It’ll be interesting to see whether it tries to combine the brands in order to create some kind of ultimate anime destination – or if it will continue to operate them independently.
“Around the world, Sony's networks have been major players in the anime space for nearly two decades, and in more recent years we have rapidly increased our networks' over-the-top and digital offerings to consumers,” said Sony Pictures Television’s Andy Kaplan. “With the acquisition of Funimation, the combined IP of ANIMAX, KIDS STATION, and Funimation allows us to deliver the best anime to fans across all screens and platforms.”

Thats a....weird investment
@BLP_Software i dont think so sony is a big company and anime is big in Japan and sony could mix anime and ps4 together like a streaming service exclusive to the ps4
@tonyp1987 Crunchyroll and NicoNico though...
Also the timing of this announcement after their financials were showing movies in the red not accounting for Spiderman (Which isnt apparently charting in ticket sales here too well around 3rd or so) but who knows how that will turn out.
Its weird to see them do this after posting a loss from that sector. Maybe they can bolster it with anime movies?
Welp, there goes anime games for Xbox!
Animax is never coming out of beta is it?
@adf86 lol
@BLP_Software that's a smart move on sony to buy them to get more into the anime field.
@NinjaWaddleDee Not at all. This isn't PlayStation division first and foremost, and also this only give them distribution rights for various movies and TV series, etc. Doesn't change anything.
Pretty big snap, with this and Fate G/O bringing in the bucks I guess Sony is looking for that weeb money.
Getting called a weeaboo for liking something like DBZ is about as ironic as a skinny guy with bleach blonde shoulder length hair not being part of an early 2000's screamo band
Alright. I don't care about this I guess. I just hope Crackle doesn't implode. I KNOW NO ONE CARES ABOUT IT, but dammit, it has show like Seinfeld and The Critic, & anime like Fate/Zero, Rurouni Kenshin, and Blood+ for free, so I actually check it out occasionally. But its absolutely not hard to imagine that thing disappearing soon since its so unpopular; with Sony sending the anime to Funimation, and getting shows like Seinfeld on Hulu or Netflix or whoever's the highest bidder for 'em.
Man if they merge it with Aniplex a lot of good or bad stuff come out of it.
@RedMageLanakyn
@get2sammyb Hey now, I used a winky face, all in good fun sir! No need to pull out the big gun gifs!
@Hapuc @TruthfulVoice well according to this nothing will be changing

@FullbringIchigo
Hope so they aren't under Aniplex so that is something don't get me wrong they make some good anime but god their Prices are insanely high.
@Hapuc i wouldn't know about that, Aniplex don't release their stuff in the UK, it's done through third partys like Manga UK or Anime LTD and they seem to be reasonably priced
Well, they were never going to put all their eggs in one basket. I wonder if they might use that to their advantage for the PlayStation brand in the future somehow.
@FullbringIchigo
Ahh my man if only you knew...Persona 5 Ova they charged 50$ for 20 minutes then Sword art online it was like 300$ i think even more.
@Hapuc that sounds really bad in the UK you can get Sword Art Online on blu-ray for £35, that's the entire first series
@FullbringIchigo
It's insane man they really are expensive in that regard but eh expect the worse hope for the best
Didn't see that coming, even it does make sense.
Funimation is one of the absolute worst when it comes to "translation" and it kills me to think they'll have deeper pockets to fall back on now.
I think this is pretty big news for Sony and a really interesting move.
Want to know how this will effwct funimation streaming service an the relation ship with stuff like vrv( which is awesome btw)
I wonder if there is a connection with the next Spiderman movie, which will be an animated "a la Pixar" and featuring Milles Morales instead of Parker.
As for the work funimation has done so far...Let's just say I'm glad to watch my DBZ episodes in their Dragon Box versions.
