Given the meteoric rise of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, it was inevitable that other games would try and emulate its success. On PlayStation 4, where PUBG isn't yet available, we've got the likes of Fortnite's newly introduced Battle Royale mode. By most accounts, the survive-'em-up's effort is pretty good, but PUBG developer Bluehole doesn't seem all that happy with Fortnite studio Epic's move.
"After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known," a statement from Bluehole VP Chang Han Kim reads. "We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right," it continues.
Fair enough we suppose, but we're sure Bluehole's been expecting a parade of imitators for a while now. What do you make of this? Can you blame other developers for trying to cash in on the success of something like PUBG? Please don't copy and paste another's thoughts in the comments section below.

It's to be expected, you have a hit, everyone will imitate, or at least attempt to, to varying degrees of success.
The thing I don't think is right, and I agree with them on, is specifically calling out and using another product to advertise your own.
It's blunt, morally grey, and honestly, shows you cant market your product without saying "Hey, you like this thing? We are like that but better", instead of the more normal, and less shady, "We are doing this now, give it a shot".
Comparisons will inevitably be made, unjust or otherwise, but you don't use another brand to market your own. That's...dumb. Shows a lack of faith on your own products unique merits.
"After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known,
should have released the game on the PS4 then, if you had you would already have the fanbase yourself
these people are playing it because they WANT your game but your not giving it to them so they are finding alternatives
"We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right,"
but this bit i agree with, they shouldn't be using the name without permission
Would be better if they tone down the cap from 100 to 50-80 so that the PUBG devs would stop complaining.
Last man standing isn't anything new. The Dev isn't happy that someone released a more polished alternative to his broken game.
Maybe they shouldn't have signed a timed exclusive with Microsoft.
I actually find it humorous that they're mad about it. They aren't releasing it on PS4 so another company has stepped in and delivered for the PS4 players. They beat you to the punch bro.. maybe this will force them to polish up the game faster instead of just banking off of an unfinished product
@FullbringIchigo I agree with you about Epic using PUBG as marketing push. They should just say is a Battle Royale type of game.
But is rather strange for not expecting copycats in an industry full of copycats. I mean, imagine Activision being mad at EA because they are doing a FPS military shooter. It's kinda silly.
I understand why he would be annoyed by them mentioning PUBG in the advertisements, but he's stupid to think that PUBG is supposed to be the only last man standing game out there. Imagine if all genres could only have one game in them.
Heck, they weren't even the first ones to make that kind of game anyway, so they're just as guilty.
@NathanUC Fortnite Battle Royale is itself still in what is considered "early access" and it's definitely way less polished than PUBG, even with all of it's problems. I guess you wouldn't know that unless you've actually played both and had a basis to compare them.
Boohoo, you don't own the genre.
@RedMageLanakyn I never said it was great, but from what I've played of both, Fortnite is way more complete. PUBG is a mess and has been for the last 4 years.
They are like seriously rich at this moment...settle down jeez
Wow, they put out an actual statement. I thought it was just going to be an off the cuff comment from an interview.
This will be interesting.
One will be readily available on the PS4, one won't.
I know which one gets my money.
@NathanUC Umm, PUBG hasn't even been in early access for a year. Are you sure you don't have your games mixed up?
@RedMageLanakyn That was the move to Unreal Engine and a standalone game. The team has been hosting iterations of this game mod for much longer. The version of PUGB now is certainly more polished than the versions in ARMA2 Dayz or standalone DayZ, but that's not saying a whole lot. I think he even had parts in the H1Z1 nonsense.
Well, then you should have released your game on the PS4 I guess?
@NathanUC And thats what they hate you snooze you lose.
"We took the basic idea for our game from elsewhere but now someone else is using that idea, we're outraged."
I don't remember seeing From Software complaining about the rise of Souls-like games.
@NathanUC There was no team when it was a mod created in Arma, it was one guy. He consulted on H1Z1, and then was brought on to a team for PUBG. If you want to lump in all the different iterations he's done separately as one, well, that doesn't really make sense. We certainly don't consider all the resident evil or final fantasy games that have the same people working on them lumped together to be criticized, this is no different.
If they push for legal action I hope the Fortnite devs push em into the ground and down a hill. They dont get monopolize a game mode, especially one that originated as a custom mode for H1Z1
Least we get to play both but I'd rather play the real McCoy that is PUBG. It's like when Saints Row was accused of copying GTA with the whole open-world thing but GTA is in a whole different league all together, the sales reflect that.
A lot of people here bashing PUBG, but the key thing is this
"we have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press"
this is the entirety of the issue. OBVIOUSLY you can't stop a game mode but absolutely no reason for them to be name dropping PUBG in a press release about their new game mode.
Epic shouldn't use the pubg name but they still can add battle royale mode to their game, pubg doesn't have right to battle royal concept in the game.
"We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG...This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right"
BOOHOO, who cares. Sorry, I don't have much interest in what a company "feels"
@wittypixel To play Devil's advocate, doesn't the way Epic's been talking about PUBG legitimise it as the industry standard?
@get2sammyb It does, they have owned and touted that crown no doubt. But does that legally entitle them to bar others of usage? would be interesting to find out.
That's like saying a 'game' has 'similar' modes to CoD or referencing Quake for a n Arena Style MP game. Isn't PUBG a take on the 'Hunger Games'?
I am sure that they would have been annoyed if Epic had just copied them without even any 'acknowledgment'. Surely its better to get some credit than none at all..
To sort this out they all need to be parachuted into a dull grey location and shoot each other.
Everybody copies everyone else but that isn't actually a bad thing. Certain features become industry standards or expected of specific genres, and most games have imitated or iterated on others in one way or another. I think this bloke's statement is quite ridiculous to be honest.
While they look into this they could also look into why older games like doom also have similar shooting mechanics and the film Battle Royale has a similar story set-up...
Seriously though the entire industry is mainly about iterations of previous games. Wasn't there a court case many years ago about a game being too similar to Street Fighter which got thrown out and set a precedent in this sort of matter?
Tough luck. They don't own that particular genre of games, nor do they have the right to attack others that move in on this genre.
Looks like they are worried that someone might upstage them.
Just make sure to create the superior game and leave the rest to the market to decide.
Making public comments like that just makes you come of as whiny brats.
He is not happy because of the size of the PS4 player base, maybe thay should have thought about that before signing with Microsoft. Thay obviously wanted to be the first PUBG game on PS4, thay were nuts going exclusive with one console platform.
Look I have not played PUBG but isn't it just aping stuff from h1z1 and day Z? I don't care about any of these but the nerve of the dev is surprising.
I can understand why they are angry about the name droping epic shoud not have done that but the copying part is nonsense honestly they should have expected this not epics fault that PUBG is exclusive with microsoft and even then PUBG is not on on xbox yet
@wittypixel Yeah, a lot of salt in these comments that ignores the actual issue at hand.
@get2sammyb Just to bounce of of your point, Sammy, I don't see why they would say anything other than positive things about PUBG. It uses their engine after all, and it is perhaps the best game in the genre. I don't really see this as a problem to be honest, and as you said it might be that Epic sees PUBG as the industry standard for the genre.
Am I wrong in seeing a similarity between Epic saying their game is like PUBG, and a some other devs or video game bloggers saying that X game is "the Dark Souls of blank" or "It's just like Dark Souls".
I think it's dumb, but I don't think it's wrong!
Not getting prior consent to use the PUBG name was perhaps a bad move, but thats the only leg they have to stand on with this.
There is system for collecting better gear in PUBG right?
Hardly their invention.
They have various weapon systems right?
Hardly their invention.
They have a loot and weapon attachment system right?
Hardly their invention.
Point is, as has been stated catagorically, they do not own the rights to the genre, and if they arent releasing on the PS4 they can hardly complain about possible imitation given they arent in direct competition on that platform.
