You could make a case for NieR: Automata being one of the biggest success stories of 2017. Don’t get us wrong, the game always looked good, but its predecessor was a big commercial bomb – and it didn’t fare particularly well critically either. But the tale of 2B and her android pals captured the imagination of gamers and reviewers alike – attracting plenty of high praise and some surprisingly sturdy sales numbers.
And now, perhaps unsurprisingly, Square Enix is seeking staff to head up “NieR-related projects”. Open roles include Scenario Staff, who will be responsible for creating side-quests and designing non-playable characters. Sounds like the sort of thing that would end up in an Automata sequel, doesn’t it?

I don't care how Nier (or Niers of the two versions were really that different) sold and reviewed - what I managed to play of ot on XB360 once was very impressive. Still holding out for the remaster on Switch or at least on PS4 - deamers defy reality. XD Automata has been on my wishlist since trying the demo, too, and I welcome as many other games as this franchise can get.
Do you mean in the NIER future AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH .......sorry!
FFXV Nier Carnival incoming.
I disliked the demo so haven't played it yet, but the 2B cosplay has been very interesting.
Got it as part of my P* Collection. Gotta actually play it now.
@rjejr
I didn't like the demo either, but gave it a chance after the reviews. I warmed up to it near the end of the first play through, but really started to enjoy it on the second play through, and even more so on the third. It gets better each time...and each time is different.
I'm about 110 hour in nier automata, replaying it for the plat (miss the item for the pod upgrade), I can't wait for the sequels
I hope it's an Automata sequel!
@lacerz I'm kind of a 1 and done kind of guy, no time for 2nd chances w/ my ever growing backlog. Thanks though.
@rjejr The first, second, and third playthroughs aren't really new playthroughs. It's incredibly difficult to explain without spoilers, but you aren't done with the game until the third playthrough. Think of them more like acts in a play. It is incredibly different each time.
@rjejr
It's a great game...with a lot of depth. You don't realize just how much the first play through, but that's what makes NiER special. The story continues to unfold and give you perspective each time you play. And it's a lot of fun! Probably one of the most fun 2017 titles.
Just finished my third playthrough tonight actually. There were some things I missed for trophies so I'll need to go back and work on getting those to Platinum it. 😊
I still need to get this.
Meh, the story and soundtrack were both decent but I didn't find the overall gameplay anything special.
It's a good game sure, but I fail to see how it could be considered a GOTY contender or w/e.
It's my GOTY so far, although it has close competition..!
Can't wait for some more Nier.
@rjejr I'm not sure why people call them playthroughs, it just turns many people off. Like Constable_What said, they are more like acts in a movie or play. Acts 1 and 2 are very similar. Ever play Sonic Adventure or Odin Sphere? You pick a character in those games, and you see the story from different perspectives. Act 3 is a continuation of story events in Acts 1 and 2, and it's where the game shines the most.
@NinjaWaddleDee Sonic Adventure was my first Sonic game, came bundled w/ my Dreamcast, and NFL2K that I never played, and it's still my favorite to this day. It's really the only Sonic game I've ever played thru to the end until Generations. And even SA I only played thru once as Sonic and then I was done. I've gone back to it a few times over the years but I still only ever play as Sonic.
@lacerz The demo did have a great boss fight at the end, but I had to run thru way too many 2D brown corridors, and any of those 3 things would normally turn me off, add them all together and well...
@Constable_What That makes it sound like The Bouncer. FYI PS2 launch title that lasted 20 minutes b/c you were supposed to play it 3x, once for each character, so it lasted an hour. It's the game that changed Square from a maker of great story based games to a company that only cared about graphics. Though they have done some good work on the 3DS.
I may get to this some day and play it if it pops up on PS+, but no rush. I'm only now playing Kingdoms of Amalur on PS3, that's what my backlog looks like. If I had to pick some random game to play I'd pick Gravity Rush 2 before this, I like the aesthetic better in that one, and that's years out.
@nhSnork The original NieR is personal favorite. Between it and Automata, it has definitely overtaken as my favorite gaming series, with Drakengard looped in due to the universe being shared. I really want a remaster or a remake even.
Glad to see there's a future for this franchise.
Good. I loved Automata, it's right behind Gravity Rush 2 on my GotY for 2017.
