The Evil Within 2 launches tomorrow, but Bethesda policy means we won’t have our review ready for a few more days yet. The rest of media is in the same boat, of course, but a few verdicts have trickled out online – and a couple of impressions pieces, too. We figured that we’d round these up for you, because it’s probably worth telling you that this sounds like a very good game.
US Gamer.net - In Progress
I haven't finished the game, but it feels like it's right around the corner. From what I've played so far though, The Evil Within 2 is everything I wanted from the first game. Every major complaint I had about the first game is at least addressed in some manner, though the tweaks aren't always perfect. It's a unique psychological horror title with Resident Evil 4's action combat. Tentatively, for those folks who weren't a fan of Capcom's reboot with Resident Evil 7, The Evil Within offers something that you might like, while blazing its own trail.
Polygon - In Progress
I don’t know if The Evil Within 2 will be able to work this magic right up until the credits — which seem a lot further off than they did in the first game — but for now, I’m extremely impressed. The game just keeps tossing everything it has at me, and every time I think I’ve seen it all, it gives me some unique revelation, some dreadful apparition I’ve yet to encounter. That push and pull, between wanting to see what the game has in store next and being terrified to find out — that delightful feeling is why I play horror games, and so far this one is nailing it.
Twinfinite - 4/5
As it stands, The Evil Within 2 is held back by a forgettable story and annoying AI issues that would probably put a serious damper on your gameplay experience if you were playing on Nightmare difficulty. And yet, it also does exactly what a horror game should do, and it does it well. Despite its flaws, The Evil Within 2 is a thoughtfully constructed horror rollercoaster ride that strikes a delicate balance between giving the player the power to fight back, and also making them realize that sometimes, all those guns and gear won’t save you from the terrors you can’t understand.
Game Revolution - 3.5/5
In the end, The Evil Within 2 is a worthy sequel that makes a number of bold decisions. For those solely looking for the survival horror thrills of the first game, its spotlight upon combat will likely be a disappointment, as will its introduction of a dull open world. However, there's plenty tucked away in The Evil Within 2 that will appeal to both fans of the original and new players, with it presenting a mix of Mikami's best ideas and John Johanas' new direction. It's certainly not what I was expecting, but in a good way.
Are you planning to pick up The Evil Within 2 this week at all? What are your expectations for the survival horror sequel? Let us know in the comments section below.

Games Radar also gave it a 3.5/5
Edit: My Pre-order has just arrived....
Can't wait to pick up my copy tomorrow
Canny wait! Hope mine turns up today. @BAMozzy Did you order off Amazon? Mine dispatched yesterday so you never know.
I really love games like this, and it sounds like it's addressed lots of the little problems the first game had.
I wanted to wait but I am not too sure with these reviews. Yet more reviews wont hurt and I dont want to rush through it or drop it with the incoming plumber.
Plus Bethesda.
I really liked the first game, even though I never finished it because the black bars drove me up the wall. I haven't tried it yet with the patch to remove them.
Can't wait to get my copy tomorrow. Really need a good spooky game for the spooky month. That and I'm almost done with SteamWorld Dig 2.
@kyleforrester87 I ordered from ShopTo and had a dispatch notification early yesterday.
I watched the Games Radar review and i was disappointed that some mechanics - particularly the 'Matches' is missing. There is something special about 3rd Person Horror Survival games - something RE series has lacked since RE4. I know TEW wasn't the 'best' but it was 'decent' and whilst I enjoyed Alien: Isolation, I preferred this in a lot of ways.
I never enjoyed the Hide and Seek of Alien, also the cheap 'deaths' that game had and 'loop' it could get stuck in - Die cheaply, reload check point with Alien in the room, die cheaply, reload check point with Alien in the room, die cheaply... etc until you actually reload the checkpoint and the Alien is not in the room - but in a vent directly above you so you 'die' cheaply and reload. Admittedly this wasn't 'common' but it happened enough times during my playthrough - Ok so maybe the loop would only be 2-3 times, not 4+ either but it shouldn't happen at all - the problem with 'Random' and 'split AI' of the Alien. Some of the Cheap deaths include waiting for the Alien to go past and down the right corridor so you can go left into the 'next' room - as soon as you open that door, the Alien has somehow teleported in front of you and variations on this. Also being stuck in a cupboard with the Alien unable to leave the room for 2-3minutes is 'tedious' game-play. I know I may be sounding really harsh about that game but its still a great game in between these - and the 10th mission/chapter is a treat for all fans of the film - its almost worth buying just for this (it is now its dropped a LOT in price).
Anyway that's a little off topic but Evil Within should be in every RE1-4's fan's collection. Its not 'perfect', not the 'best' games of this generation, but it captures the right balance of pure horror and survival that RE had.
I was just sick in my mouth a little bit when I read "open-world" there.
IGN Italy and Eurogamer Italy rated it 8/10; the cons can hopefully be balanced and fixed in the next weeks (the game is way too easy on Normal and almost impossible on Hard; hiccups occasionaly slow the frame rate and rarely freeze it for few seconds...)
Not really interested but will probably get it if available for cheap
I have mine downloaded on the PS Store! Can't wait to play tonight!
As long as more good reviews come out, I'm getting this first thing tomorrow.
@johncalmc Yeah me to. However as far as I understand, it's more of a hub world with individual areas. I think the linear level design should still be there to some extent.
@JoeBlogs From the limited gameplay that I've seen, there's no black bars in this game.
@andreoni79 Freezes WTF that is a big problem for me. Well in a month or 2 it will be patched.
Bethesda's decision to hold off review code is a bit odd on this one, given the first game only had a lukewarm reception and there is very little hype for this game it would have done it wonders to have some buzz leading up to launch. I'm left with only two possible conclusions, either the game is bad/buggy or Bethesda are willing to harm sales so they don't have to go back on their no early review code policy.
