Square Enix has revealed that it's working on a remastered edition of Star Ocean: The Last Hope for PlayStation 4. The action role-playing game first released as an Xbox 360 exclusive back in 2009. In 2010, it landed an 'International' version, which featured some fresh content and made the jump to the PlayStation 3.
For a title that had a protagonist named Edge Maverick, the game was reasonably well received, although atrocious English voice acting ensured that the release is largely remembered for all the wrong reasons. Still, we're sure that some of you will be jumping for joy right about now.
So, when's it due out? Square Enix hasn't offered a date, but it says that the remaster is currently playable, so it can't be too far away. It's also worth mentioning that it'll support 4K on PS4 Pro, which is nice.
Edge Maverick, though. Edge Maverick. Just wow.

I remember it for all the right reasons If you like a high quality grind in your RPGs The Last Hope offers one of the best in the business. It already looked pretty fantastic on XBox360 so it'll be interesting to see how much in the way of improvements they actually do. My PS4 Pro awaits further developments eagerly.
@rjejr I’m guessing yer talking FFVIIR
Well different teams... Square Enix is a big company w multiple divisions and teams for multiple games...
Huh, wasn't much of a fan of this installation to be perfectly honest, now that I got to try SO3 on the PS4 as well (And quit because it kept freezing) I can safely say that Star Ocean 2 Second Story is the only game in this series that I like.
Hated this game, and not for the voice acting aha
Def the worst in the series, with characters like Sharp-corner Freethinker really dragging it down.
sweet, loved this game
i would also love it if they put the others on the system too
Seeing that SO5 was the weakest of the series, I'm not surprised that they are bringing an actual GOOD Star Ocean game.
Ok, sure, SO4 may be flawed, like the voice acting, story and tedious grinding, but compared to SO5? There was at least effort.
@SoulsBourne128
I think it was more of the matter that SO4 had an actual budget.
My favorite star ocean game and I don’t care who knows it!
Star ocean the second story on ps1 is my fav star ocean game, I hope squareenix remaster it using project octopath traveler engine.
This game was for me the incarnation of everything I don't like in JRPGS ... But I know quite a lot of people who actually liked it, so good for them!
Another remaster to hope for on Switch as well, but not counting the compromises of Remote Play, at least this one means ALL of Star Ocean will be available to play on the go now. Not so many awesome series with the roots in the 90s can boast that much.
Only of its retail.
@rjejr "I don't see why they're remaking this though, it wasn't' anything great"
"Greatness" as you read it on the internet is subjective anyway; I reasonably expect to enjoy the "widely panned" Star Ocean 5 as well since Final Fantasy XIII has ultimately taught me to trust my experience alone in any aspect that doesn't cover objective bugs and performance issues. And since the PS3 version of this game is one of the many victims of PS4's backwards compatibility loss, it warrants a port/remaster as much as any of them.
I actually really liked this game. The gameplay and story were solid. The graphics were mixed (Pretty environments, but those puppet mouths, man) but the voices were ok. Lymle and Sarah were garbage though.
I remember this game is super grindy...
@Expa0 Yeah, that. Is the same problem with MvC, where MvC3 had an actual budget, MvC:I was the same as the half of SF5's DLC budget (which, personally, I find it hard to believe).
Soooooo, and FF XIII Tri?
I don't see how Edge Maverick could be considered a bad name. I think it's a great name! Who wouldn't want a name that immediately makes you seem like an overly enthusiastic amateur backyard wrestler that is also an aspiring race car driver?
I wish my name was Edge Maverick! 😂
I thought everyone hated this game but whatever maybe japan liked it.
@Constable_What You are freaking hilarious! I literally shot soda out of my nose lol. xD
It's not that it's good nor bad it's more like in between, the game had some flaws to it but it's actually really enjoyable. Just wish the voice acting coudlve been better, all in all I'm really glad this game is getting remastered SO2 is by far the BEST in the series but I love SO3 because of the story hopefully we'll get SO2 remastered soon.
I remember this I got it for 360 years ago I gave up after getting that little girl who kept saying "Kay" it drop me fu**ing nuts plus it took a long while to get to a decent level to continue forward. And I hated the achievement you had to get every chest in the game miss one your screwed
This game was fun but flawed, 'kay.
