The Evil Within 2 launches on the PlayStation 4 this week, which feels a bit weird, doesn’t it? The first game had a massive marketing budget behind it, mostly focusing on the return of Resident Evil 4 director and all-around video game hall of famer Shinji Mikami. This one? We’ve barely seen a sniff of it since E3 2017 really, have we?
Well, the launch trailer’s out now and it looks expectedly awesome, but there’s a weird lack of hype surrounding what should be one of the bigger releases of the year. We’ve just received review code, but Bethesda policy means we won’t have our verdict ready for launch day; look forward to some first impressions later in the week instead.

I saw GAME doing a promotion where you get a tenner off when preordering, which I've never seen them do. Must be struggling which is a shame because the first one was a flawed but fun romp.
@Cassetticons I feel awful, but I'm in the boat where I know this is going to be £9.99 in a few weeks so I'm just waiting for the price to drop.
I also bought Dishonored 2 for £9.99 this way.
Already had dispatch notification on my Pre-order...
Also my youtube feed has been full of this game for the past week or more - inc 1 of the first 90mins (I didn't watch as I don't want it spoiled) but there has been quite a bit on youtube from the various big gaming channels...
Also I have seen a TV advert (at least i think I saw one - whilst FF through) - to me it seems it hasn't been 'absent' but maybe PushSquare haven't been covering it so much....
Getting my goosebumps on Friday the 13th!!!
Huh. I forgot this was coming out. The first one was pretty good so I am expecting this one to be pretty good.
@get2sammyb Yeah same to be honest. I bought D2 when it was £20 and just a few days later it went down to a tenner. Bethesda are really struggling to shift games that aren't Elder Scrolls or Fallout.
But I'm honestly not buying any new releases full-price around November. We've got a glut out and you know deep discounts are coming. It's becoming commonplace - most people can only spend the same amount on games each time, but there are more games than ever on the market, so companies are seeing less sales and making deeper cuts to try to compensate.
any date for a review?
@BAMozzy Maybe. I still predict a huge decline in sales for this one.
one of the best games ever
I am very interested but I will wait too. Mario Odyssey hits two weeks later and I wont rush this one.
I'll wait for the bargain bin on this one, if I get it at all. First one really felt like a mess in the aiming and movement mechanics, and ran like hot garbage on PS4. Not to mention most of the boss fights felt like they were ripped straight from RE4.
Am I right in remembering that in the first it didn't have the option to invert Y? I know that it was something to do with the shooting/aiming that prevented me from completing the first game. That and those pesky black lines at the top and bottom of the screen (wide-screen I think lol). Does anyone know if these two things are fixed/improved?
Got the first one when patched and it wasn't that bad for a cross gen game. I'm playing games 6/12 months after their release so this may be my spring horror game... Too many games, too many patches, too many sales to buy at Day One. Today I got Dishonored 2 and its lovely 12gb update...
@blakey78 Once updated the game you can remove the black bars via menu. Don't remember about y axis...
My copy was dispatched today, I'll support games like this till they stop making em. Which perhaps won't be long if they don't sell enough copies
I'm actually expecting the game to be pretty good. The first was fine, it just needed tightening up in just about every area..
Edit: I cracked and watched the trailer. It looks really bloody good!!!
@get2sammyb Probably will be less sales. More choice right now, and yes the first one didn't meet expectations. Still I would say you guys haven't published many articles about this game. It is what it is, not a criticism, maybe there just isn't much to talk about.
Let's hope it's a) a great game and b) does well enough to warrant a third instalment.
I still did not play the first one. Hard platinum is scaring me.
Absolutely loved the first game (and played all the dlc for it too)but the trailers for the sequel haven't excited me as much as the first game. Will be getting at some point but not on release.
@blakey78 God,those black borders were a real pain in the ass! What we're they all about?lol and they just happened to update the game and do away with them after I'd finished the game.Typical.
@Flopsy It will apparently be 4K native with HDR support on Xbox X so I'd expect and hope it will be enhanced on Pro with HDR support across the PS4 range.
Perhaps @get2sammyb can elude before the reviews ready? Would be good to know myself!
Bethesda's review policy will probably hurt sales. The timing also just isn't good. But I do want to play this one. The first was pretty good and really the only other horror game I like this gen besides Resident Evil 7.
@get2sammyb Probably - the first wasn't exactly a big seller either and I haven't seen many comments about people looking forward to it. Its not exactly launching during a quiet phase either. With games like AC: Origins and Wolfenstein 2 still to come as well.
I like Horror Survival games so it's on my radar...
Looking forward to this. The first was flawed, but had great ideas. I'm really up for a a sequel that can fix the problems of the original like removing those black bars. Not to mention some of the monster designs look genuinely terrifying, hopefully this game will be somewhat scarier than the first. Unless there is some breaking news, I will buy this day one.
@get2sammyb Curious, when you guys get sent "review code" how close is it usually in comparison to what we get on release? Is it close most of the time or are there some big differences? Whenever I see the words "review code" I've always wondered what they keep out, if you get patches, etc.
I wasn't a big fan of the "horror" in the first, really wasn't subtle and it just didn't have an effect on me. Combining that with the trend of all recent Bethesda published games means this and Wolfenstein 2 are on my 'wait until after Xmas' list.
Have this game pre-ordered. I loved the first one, and want to support more traditional survival-horror games! I don't care if it goes down in price soon after I buy it; it'll be worth it as far as I'm concerned.
Im waiting a few weeks when its completely patched. Bethesda games i cant stand the the patches that are almost bigger then the game. Prey did take ages to patch, Dishonored 2 with 15 GB patch sorry Bethesda you dont deserve to get the full price.
@RedMageLanakyn no it it was awesome
