Unsurprisingly, it's Nintendo that dominates the latest Japanese charts. With Super Mario Odyssey moving nearly half a million copies and the Switch tearing up the hardware list, there's only one PlayStation title really worth talking about: Assassin's Creed Origins. The open world release made the top five in the Land of the Rising sun, shifting almost 50,000 copies.
The PlayStation 4, meanwhile, continues to sell steadily, pushing 25,000 units across the standard model and the PS4 Pro.

Wow, look at Ark. That's quite an impressive result for that game.
Switch numbers are insane as expected, but I actually thought Mario would do a little bit more. Maybe I was anticipating too much.
EDIT: Also, pretty poor second week for Gran Turismo Sport. Thought it might hold a little bit stronger than that.
@Kidfried Splatoon 2, I think. Dragon Quest XI. Final Fantasy XV. Pokemon?
Of course it'll have huge legs, and I didn't mean to discredit Mario at all — it's still a very impressive number.
One of those Taiko units is mine, had to order the bundle on Amazon jp. Nice to see TEW2 still there.
Debut for Mario is strong, specially hardware-wise. This will be an evergreen like most Mario games.
Brilliant sales for an amazing game, glad to see Nintendo doing well again.
So I'm guessing Mario and increased stock led to that huge jump in Switch numbers. Whatever the case, it's nice to see such a great game get off to a very strong start and hopefully it'll have long legs.
Not totally surprised by the drop in GT Sports sales, but at least PS4 hardware is holding strong in the 20K-25K range.
I thought the Japanese were more fond of GT. 167k seems low eh?
@get2sammyb This is the best FW result of any 3D Mario games in Japan.. outsold Super Mario Galaxy by almost 50% and Wii had a much larger install base back than... Japan is never too keen on 3D Mario games.
Surprisingly good result for Ark and AC:O though!
I think both Sony and Nintendo have a lot of momentum going into this holiday period and they should both do very well..something I can't really say about XBox (It's all on PUBG)
@get2sammyb these media create numbers include neither downloads nor download cards, famitsu has more accurate numbers.
and impressive number for ARK...must have been great marketing or something because usually western games don't do so well in japan and especially not when it's from a pretty much completely unknown studio.
@Dodoo It's been declining for a while in Japan now. America, too. The series' market is definitely in Europe now.
@Godsent Ahh, okay. It's interesting those idiosyncrasies of the Japanese market.
@get2sammyb I think Odyssey has the best opening week of all 3D Mario games in Japan
Interestingly, according to some reports, ACO outsold Mario in the UK. I know its aided by the fact that there are many more PS4's, XB1's and PC's than Switches.
Some of the car liveries from Japanese players on GT Sport is amazing. There's a quality 2b one from Nier Automata.
@get2sammyb from what I've read elsewhere Mario sold out and was over 500,000 when digital sales were added, insane numbers
@ApostateMage Yeah, I love the anime liveries, too.
When is the AC review coming out? I'm not buying it until I hear what Pushsquare thinks.
@get2sammyb Depends on digital sales, many might a heavy online game as one to get digital.
@Godsent Well we will find out how well Xbox does with PUBG now we know that its releasing on 12th December. It couldn’t of released at a better time just before Christmas. It will be in the Xbox Game Preview programme but I bet most people won’t care since this is PUBG we’re talking about!
@JohnnyBastos If all goes to plan it'll be published by the end of the week.
Loads of PS4 titles on the list. Will probably continue like that for a long time.
@BAMozzy ACO did outsell Mario in the UK with PS4 and Xbox editions only. PC games are 99,99% purchased digitally and is not included in the UK charts, so the PC numbers didn't really affect any change of chart position, in the UK, at least.
Do bundles count towards software sales? They did have a Switch-Odyssey bundle for the launch.
@JohnnyBastos There are plenty of reviews of ACO out there if you wanted to get a broad idea of whether to buy or not. Currently its sat on 81% on metacritic for example for PS4. I too would be interested to see how 'PushSquare' reviews it but I never rely on just 1 review. If I based my decision on GamesRadar for example - its a 10/10 game. IGN a 9/10 and I have seen a number of 'very positive' video reviews too but then If I based my opinion on say the weakest review only, I could well miss out on a game that I really enjoy. I always think its wise to read/watch multiple reviews to get a broader picture.
Thanks @BAMozzy and @ShogunRok
I've been glancing at other reviews and they all seem to confirm that the open world aspect is great. Which is what I was hoping for, and is probably enough to warrant a purchase. I just want to know what the overall gameplay experience is now.
The reason I'm holding out for the Pushsquare review is because I find my opinion on a game, or the things I look for in a game, are often very close to the main reviewers'. Also, being a regular reader, I understand how the team generally feel about the series and how that will shape their review. Basically Pushsquare reviews are my most trusted thermometer these days.
That said, HZD DLC is out next week, so maybe I'll just wait for AC to come down in price.
The metacritic rating is reassuring. I find them pretty reliable.
@JohnnyBastos I agree quite often with Push Squares reviews at times - at least in the score as sometimes certain aspects that seem overlooked annoy me whilst some of the things that appear as 'negatives' have little impact on me but in general, I do think they are relatively fair. I know that with some games I don't see eye to eye with their opinion but that doesn't mean I don't respect that and often they do offer a reasoned argument for their conclusion - another reason I respect their opinion.
It also helps that very often, they offer the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification and discuss their reasoning for coming to that conclusion - again I may not always agree or share their opinion but I do respect the fact that they can justify their viewpoint in a very reasoned and adult manner. You don't get that level of interaction with a LOT of other reviewers and another reason why I respect PushSquare above others.
I still think its important to read other reviews rather than get just 1 person's opinion. Its incredibly difficult to cover the whole game in a certain amount of words. What may not seem significant to one, could well be a bug bear for another, one reviewer may well be over enthusiastic verging on Bias, whilst another may seem overly critical so its good to read a few to get a broader spectrum. If you read something in several reviews but no mention of it elsewhere, the fact PushSquare offer a Q&A means you can ask them if they encountered such things (like bugs/glitches/crashes) that may not have been mentioned and they appear honest - will say if they encountered any f these but were perhaps so minor it wasn't worth mentioning and the others were blowing it all out of proportion for example.
I read PushSquares reviews - even if I have moderate/little interest in the game, bought it already and/or purchasing for Xbox.
