‘Tis the season of cheer, and what better bringer of joy than a PlayStation 4 firmware update? Sony’s unleashed the optional PS4 firmware update 5.03 today, and as you’d expect, it does naff all. As is often the case, the platform holder’s patch notes explain that the patch will “improve system performance”. You probably won’t notice any changes.
At just 374.7MB, it’s a tiddler, and it doesn’t need to be installed for you to connect to the PlayStation Network. Probably best to just get it over with by slamming your system in Rest Mode, though – that way at least you know your console’s bang up to date, and you can get on with gaming over the Christmas period until your retinas burst.

Most people seem to think, that “improve system performance” always means every aspect of the system or system performance for every player in every game / situation.
If you own a PC, you might have received one or two million graphic driver updates which mostly improve performance only for a specific game.
Maybe these firmware updates do exactly the same only with the graphics drivers for the PlayStation. Maybe for a game that will release in near future, so we can't notice a difference at all.
The OS is somewhat of a mess. Even in the Pro the UI is laggy and occasionally very laggy, you still cannot arrange games like you want, they broke the way notifications work for some reason, psn store is slow...
If I dont need it for PSN I wont even bother.
@SMKpaladin Correct. Sometimes these updates fix compatibility with certain games even.
@NintendoFan4Lyf You mean UOTY?
Xtra stable for Xmas! Now we just need a manger!
At the moment I'm making the console stall or lock up a lot just moving around the main menu when Downloading anything. In fact the console when downloading won't load anything else. Whether it be my friends list or the store or any info on a game I highlighting and I press down to load up more info.
It seems to slow everything down when Down loading and I can't figure it out
Must be a slow news day!
Wish some one would improve my performance stability.
Why buy a Xbox when you can have these upgrades?????
Well I did have a crash yesterday...
Wouldn't be surprised if this minor update has to do with a fix/patch for the ShareFactory 3.0 Update that came out 2 days ago.
There could have been a performance reason that effected the UI negatively and this firmware patch fixed it. Could also be a number of other titles releasing soon/recently, but there's nothing imminent that I could imagine. The ShareFactory Update 3.0 coincides pretty well with the hotfix performance patch.
For me UI lag follows having javascript enabled while web browsing and to a lesser extent after browsing the store. The severity of the lag also seems dependent on length of time in the store or browsing.
Some web sites cause more lag than other sites do. One video game site, not this one, causes heavy lag if javascript is used so as to be able to use all of the features of that site.
The regular youtube also can cause UI lag after use. Again the longer the use the worse the lag. The youtube app is slower than before.
What is needed and what many hope for is a firmware update that is specific to fix the cause of UI lag after browsing the store and web sites when javascript is enable. Lag that can be severe enough that a system shutdown and restart is needed.
What i do now is a system shut down and restart after using the store and or web sites with javascript enabled. I can then load up a game, browse the gallery, use an app, ect and the UI is lag free other than youtube taking longer to load than a year ago.
So the UI fix for now for those experiencing lag may be to not have javascript enabled while web browsing and or not use the store, and if you do then do an off and on cycle to eliminate the UI lag.
