Hideo Kojima and protracted development cycles go together like cheese and pickle sandwiches, but it sounds like the Decima Engine is bringing Death Stranding to life quicker than anyone expected. Speaking in the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation (as translated by Gematsu), director Hideo Kojima has admitted that the higher-ups at Sony have been shocked by the project’s progress.
He said: “Development on Death Stranding is going well enough that SIE told us, ‘We have never before seen a game being created at such a fast pace.’ We are planning an announcement that will further surprise everyone in 2018.” Considering that the title’s latest trailer was the barmiest thing we’ve seen all year, we can’t possibly imagine what Kojima’s got cooking next.

Surprise 1st Jan launch.
a summer date for death stranding.summer of 2018.word up son
I've so far managed to temper my excitement by reminding myself that it might be years away...but could it be surprisingly sooner? Curse you hope!
Surprise! Its coming out the same year as KH3 and FF7!
@Xaessya Even bigger Surprise they all take place in the same universe
Is that really a good thing, though? I'm sure it'll be a good game, but sometimes it takes time to create a masterpiece. To use a major cliche, Rome wasn't built in a day.
I don't think it'll be ready until late 2019 at least. I imagine Sony's just been impressed by how quickly it's coming together — especially considering Kojima's track record.
Maybe something got lost in translation..'We have never before seen a game being created at such a fast pace.....by hideo kojima'
But still very much looking forward to another kojima masterpiece
@KirbyTheVampire Sometimes but not always. For example, development of Final Fantasy 7 took just over 12 months. Very often voted the best game on PSone.
E3: Available now
@KirbyTheVampire "fast pace" doesn't mean we get it "too early", it simply means that the development is going very well and smoothly, maybe due to good project management and tools. It doesn't mean the game will be unfinished or something.
What I find funny is that for Konami it always took too long and they didn't support Hideo building a huge game therefore. But in Sony's eyes it is the opposite reaction.
That's great to hear, usually news is saying the opposite. And I've never completed a Hideo Kojima game, but this one looks extremely intriguing.
@tatsumi I suppose so. It just seems like it could potentially mean that the game is shallow or something, but I've never really played any of Kojima's games and am not really in the know about what games he's made recently, so I wouldn't really know.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Cerny said that the game starts making sense after 4-5 hours in.
@tatsumi Oi.... that has potential to be a very painful opening 5 hours. I hope the gameplay is at least engaging and fun if the story doesn’t make sense for that long.
So, PS5 Launch game then
I'm sorry, but I have zero interest in this. Kojima games feature bizarre plots and are generally cutscene-laden messes. No doubt he's brilliant, but I've never been able to push myself beyond a few hours into his games; they're just too tedious.
2017 was a fantastic year for the PS4, what with Persona 5, HZD, Nioh and Nier (among others). However Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was the game that stuck with me for days after completing it, despite some minor quibbles. My game of the year.
The baby in throat scared the life out of me when I first saw it
I reckon somekind of dear or teaser will come out in 2018
The amount of time it takes to release PS games I wouldnt be surprised if they were happy with a 2020 release date.
Everyone is intrigued to find out what this game is about, so any news is good.
@Xaessya 2080?
The game is in production since 2016 ? How is it fast ?
I'm expecting a 2019 release date, sure it'll be worth the wait though.
If it comes by 2019 that's a 3 year development cycle. That's really short for a new IP.
Wonderful news, still Kojima take your time.
@premko1 Ok you tell me how you make a new IP in less then 3 years? Its not a copy and paste BF/FIFA/COD.
@Flaming_Kaiser I think it`s just ok, nothing spectacular. And the whole idea and visuals of the game could be much older.
they missed a prime opportunity to name this game "Norman Reedus and his Fetus"
