A brand new set of figures concerning last year's sales of physical games in the UK has emerged, courtesy of gamesindustry.biz.
In a comprehensive breakdown of the UK games market for 2017, it's revealed that physical sales were down by 0.4%, but revenue increased by 2.1% to £792m.
Perhaps most interestingly, however, is the list of the top 100 boxed games. While first and second place are very predictable - FIFA 18 and Call of Duty: WWII respectively - the top of the table has one or two surprising points to note. We'd imagine that even Activision is surprised at the performance of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which outsold Destiny 2 to take 6th place on the list.
It's also nice to see Horizon Zero Dawn in the top ten. For an exclusive new IP, that's an impressive place to be. Gran Turismo Sport also did well at eighth. Here's the top ten boxed games to give you an idea:
UK Top Ten Boxed Games 2017
- FIFA 18
- Call of Duty: WWII
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Assassin's Creed Origins
- Star Wars Battlefront II
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Destiny 2
- Gran Turismo Sport
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
- Horizon Zero Dawn
Obviously this is just the UK market, but it all makes for interesting reading nonetheless. What do you make of it all? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Not to discuss the pros and cons of each game but we know Destiny 2 made a bunch of digital sales, which makes sense when you consider the online service based nature of it, where as I expect Crash appealed to nostalgic gamers who wanted the box on the shelf and family buying a cheap new retail game for a family/friend over Christmas.
@kyleforrester87 It's funny you say that, as I bought Crash digitally
It's still an incredible result even if Destiny 2 did skew digital. I knew Crash was going to do well, but even I'm surprised by how well it's done.
Crash might be here again next year if it is releasing elsewhere
Nice to see Crash doing so well, I do hope it means we might see some other retro classics revived. Treated with the same quality and respect of course.
@Quintumply well I didn't mean they sold NO digital copies. Wind you neck in chum, you've got all big headed since the recent promotion well done by the way!
@kyleforrester87 Haha, thank you
I’m honestly more surprised the Gran Turismo Sport sold more than Horizon. I know Gran Turismo is big but with it’s negative press and Horizons positive press - just seems crazy to me.
@ztpayne7 I just wanted to write similar comment. It is also sad that SW Battlefront 2 is at fifth place and Horizon at tenth. I understand that more casual gamer just saw SW on front cover and bought it not knowing how bad that game is.
Crash beat Destiny? Take that, Activ.... nvm lol
In all seriousness, good news for colourful platformers.
Really happy for Horizon, Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot.
UK should be called PS Nation.
This really does make me happy. If only Crash beat Star Wars, then it would be a victory for proper gaming.
Is there really such a discrepancy between sources - those who compile lists like this?
If you look at some breakdowns of sales on PS4 game sales, the UK so say bought 2m copies of H:ZD whilst Crash sold 1.65m in the UK. That's a 350k difference and I didn't think they had details of digital and especially regional digital sales to add to these figures.
What was more interesting to me was the placing of SW:BF2 - according to one source, only 370k PS4 copies were sold. For it to place above the likes of Crash and H:ZD, it would mean that it sold incredibly well on the XB1 and PC in physical copies but its total global sales put it at around 1.3-1.4m - considering H:ZD supposedly sold 2m in the UK of its 3.87m total. Gran Tourismo sold 880k of its 1.5m total in the UK so that too seems much higher placed than it should be based on other sources.
Where do these figures come from? are they only counting some sales - like physical retailers only and not counting online stores?
Like I said, HZD has sold more in the UK than the total global sales figures for SW:BF2. Crash too sold more. Gran Tourismo sold more in the UK than Destiny 2 as well. I can't tell if GTAv is rightly placed but considering its been in the top 5 for the whole year (it seems), I wouldn't be surprised. CoD:WW2 has already sold more copies on PS4 alone than Last of Us Remastered (the 2nd best selling exclusive with 5.88m) and 2.73m in the UK and nearly as many people bought the PS4 version of Fifa 18 (5.75m) so Fifa being the top selling game and WW2 being second (if you factor in XB1 and PC sales) appears accurate but I struggle to see how the other placements can be right based on individual game sales and the breakdown per region.
Obviously there is a big discrepancy between sources...
Horizon did great it should have beaten Destiny 2 i blame the players.
@BAMozzy If your source is VGChartz then toss it in the bin immediately.
In regards to Destiny 2 online sales, l don’t think it would skew the result much, l imagine each game would sell a roughly similar percentage in digital. To suggest that Destiny 2 sold a large percentage digitally compared to the other titles doesn’t wash with me. Most games are cheaper in stores than the PSN store when released.
good, screw bungie and everything they encompass
