Epic's free-to-play shooter has just reached a new player count milestone, with the total now amassing to an impressive 40 million. The rampaging popularity of Fortnite Battle Royale has reached the same number as Rocket League, but in a fraction of the time.
The developer has also said that it achieved a record number of concurrent players at 2 million last weekend. It goes without saying that these numbers are taken from players across all formats.
Speaking with Eurogamer, lead systems designer Eric Williamson said, "...some of the folk around the office are saying hey, we could be the biggest Battle Royale game in the western world, which is crazy.
"Some people are saying we could be the biggest and best-played game [full stop] in the western world."
These figures align nicely with a big update to the map, which is apparently dropping this week.

Absurd statistics. This has been a quiet smash hit.
Fortnite>Battlegrounds
Love it, certainly one of the best games for me in the last few weeks
Downloaded but never actually played it. Keep meaning to but been occupied with Horizon trying to get the platinum trophy.
Need more free time.
I had fun with Fortnite when it released but since I got PUBG I uninstalled it and I never looked back. PUBG is a lot more tactical, in-depth and getting a kill and winning a game feels so much more satisfying.
I doubt Fortnite would be successful as it is with 40 million players if it wasn’t free.
Don't care for Fortnite or PUBG, but I like rooting for the underdog.
Hopefully this encourages Bluepoint to actually finish their game.
Kinda am not suprised, it’s F2P...
Although if it was 40M on PS4 alone that’s where I’d ACTUALLY be surprised
I mean, it's free to play on 3 platforms with a combined player base of well over 200 million, so while still impressive, they've made zero money off from it, and probably got very few sales for the mediocre PVE game it's attached to. So.....golf clap?
Interesting, I don't remember seeing any reviews for this so far.
It's great to see a non-mobile game reach such a huge audience.
Love this game, great fun and to think it is free compared to the dross we have to pay for is incredible!
I don't normally do micro transactions but happy to chip a few quid in with this purely to show my appreciation to the developers for being awesome.
While I wouldn't say it's the best game ever made, it does the battle Royale style well and is widely available due to it being free to play also helps that non ps plus subs can play online as well. Though I don't think i will ever get used to the shooting mechanics.
The beginning of people refusing to pay for games begins. Why pay £60 when you can have a game for free?
Call me mad, but its gonna happen.
@Neolit Ok so I have both!
First, and obvious one is that Fortnite is free so you can easily lure more friends to it!
Second, the cross play is really useful, I have a cousin that plays on PC while I play on PS4.
Third, I prefer PS4 anyway.
Fourth, the graphics (being less realistic) look a little bit more polished and fit well with the game!
Fifth, the construction part opens up so many good possibilities, it's a whole new level...
Lastly I prefer Fortnite cause I find it easier to pick up at the start! Battlegrounds can be a little harder since it's a lot more inventory management!
If you need more information, ask away please!
And that's just the player count in NA, EU and Aus/NZ. It's still not yet released (probably never will) in other countries on console and PC.
Meanwhile the PvE experience that many people paid money for and believed in languishes.
Epic Games is such a trash company.
@RedMageLanakyn Very wrong, they sell skins on average for $15 a pop and a "battle pass." I'd say roughly half of people I see have at least one.
@Lonejester Oh, that's new. I played it a month ago and there wasn't anything at all for MTs.
Its okay. Hiding all the outfits and gear upgrades like gliders behind a paywall makes playing the game pointless.
