With our very own Game of the Year list enshrined in history, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the jury's in on the best games of last year. However, apparently a panel of industry professionals called the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced their nominations for this year's D.I.C.E Awards, so we thought we'd better cover it.
Leading the pack is Horizon: Zero Dawn - which came third in our list, yet didn't win anything at The Game Awards - with 10 nominations, including Oustanding Achievement in Game Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Story, and Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction. Surprisingly, it's the sole PlayStation 4 representative for the biggest prize of the night, competing against The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Cuphead, Super Mario Odyssey, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for the Game of the Year award.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - which came seventh and second respectively in our list - are also tied with six nominations each. The award ceremony, hosted by Kinda Funny's Greg Miller and Nerdist's Jessica Chobot, is scheduled for 8pm PT on Thursday 22nd February.

Could Horizon collect its first major award of the year? Do you think other PlayStation properties deserved nominations? Establish an awards panel in the comments below.

It probably won't win anything again. 🙄
Ooh very interesting choices, there's quite a broad range of games here, so this should be a good watch.
As a side note, the fact that Nier isn't even nominated for Original Musical Composition is a crime.
Confuses the hell out of me all these different awards. That's not to say I don't agree with the position of the titles in the list. Just.. meh.
Very strong list of nominations, I think. Surely Horizon will win at least one of these!
I think Zelda's got it again this time. I did enjoy Horizon but man Zelda is on a totally different level from anything I played last year. That being said, I've yet to play Mario.
@nessisonett I'm really enjoying Zelda, got it for Christmas. But it's not got me hooked like other games have. I tend to not play it for 3-4 days then binge for 6-7 hours lol.
Weird game.
I count ‘only’ five nominations for Zelda, versus 10 for Horizon. I wonder if this is reactionary since Horizon was snubbed at TGA. Maybe DICE are trying to make it not seem so Zelda-centric. I think if people saw Zelda winning everything again they’d just rather not tune in. It will certainly still win GOTY, make no doubt about it, but it is nice to see Horizon get a little attention.
@BranJ0 - I agree NieR being omitted from the Music category is most certainly a crime, an award it won at TGA. Also note Hellblade’s absence in the Sound Design category. I’ve yet to play it but from what I’ve read, that’s a travesty of the highest order as well. What were they thinking? I guess Injustice 2 is more deserving? Okay ....
How is Hollow Knight not nominated for art direction!? That's messed up.
Surely breath of the wild should appear as handheld game of the year seen as everyone keeps whinging that the switch is a handheld? Not sure how it missed a nod for story neither? DICE awards subsidised by Sony any chance??? Haha
@BranJ0 totally agree
Nice to see Hellblade get the recognition it deserves. Here's hoping it helps sales a bit.
Same for Horizon, but that one is already doing great.
The Invisible Hours actually got nominated for something! What an overlooked game that is!
Horrific lack of Persona 5. Not being nominated in art direction or soundtrack is pretty much a disgrace.
SHAM!
@DLB3 Yep, 100% agreed.
I'm surprised Persona 5 only got nominated for a couple categories, not even the achievement in story one, that really surprises me because its story is SO GOOD. (edit: guess i'm not the only one that thinks it got a bit snubbed haha)
I hope Everything can pick up an award, I loved that game, same with Edith Finch as well.
There has always been multiple award shows for games - that's how games like the Witcher 3, Uncharted, Last of Us etc have so many awards to these games. The Game Awards may be the most high profile in the media these days but not the only one - still got the BAFTAs to come too.
According to Wiki, Witcher 3 has won over 800 awards and 250 'Game of the Year' awards. The awards come from DICE, Game Awrds, Baftas, Golden Joystick, Game Devs Choice awards as well as publications like IGN, Gamespot, Edge etc.
H:ZD certainly deserves to win in a lot of categories - although I can see they are up against others who could arguably deserve to win as well. Being nominated is still recognition though...
Pubg, an unfinished game, being nominated for GOTY and not games like Persona 5, Nier: Automata, Gravity Rush 2, Nioh, Resident Evil 7, Uncharted, Prey, Wolfenstein 2, etc.
Anyway, let's appeal the PC crowd by nominating a game that still is on beta. -.-
@PS_Nation I said this in another thread, but you have to appreciate the impact PUBG has had on the industry as a whole — even if it is/was in Early Access.
Most of the noms fair enough, a few here and there I would argue for/against, but Nier Automata not in original music makes as much sense as a penguin in a microwave!
@Th3solution Yeah, quite a lot of these nominations seem very strange, I can't really understand how they explain some of their choices, with even games like Persona 5 for art direction missing out in some categories that they have been universally praised for
Ok Hellblade is not nominated for sounddesign is that not where the game was loved for?
@BranJ0 Yeah i see some really strange ones 2.
@get2sammyb Yeah no next year its finished then it can compete again i guess?
@KingSandyRavage Is it only for handheld yes or no answer please.
@Flaming_Kaiser not the question I asked. I whole heartedly believe the Switch is a new gaming format altogether. Various people labelling it a handheld kind of is evidenced here that it is indeed not a handheld. Thanks for supporting the point I was making.
I think you mis read the sub-text of what I was saying. Apologies for not giving you a yes/no answer, but you didn’t really ask a yes/no question
Some of the choices are weird. How is Horizon never in the running for RPG of the year? Why is Mario not a choice for best family game? And why on god's green earth is Persona 5 not up for a best art direction award?
@Th3solution Well, Horizon being nominated in more categories only makes sense, as it's a more traditional and well-rounded release. Zelda was easily my favorite experience of 2017, but its ambient sound design, lack of focus on narrative elements, limited voice acting, etc. make it a game that doesn't fit for half of these categories.
@Ralizah Yes, that’s true. Never played BotW, but there are just some games that are greater than a sum of their parts. It may not do a multitude of things well, but the overall experience might have something intangible and unquantifiable that makes it great.
@KingSandyRavage The PSP did what the Switch does right now. The Nintendo Switch is a handheld console, that you can plug into your TV for extra bonus stuff like 1080p and faster this and that. But it is most definitely a portable.
The PSP did nowhere near what the Switch is doing right now. It was also an awful console.
What the Swirch actually is, is a home console that has the capability of being fully mobile. Or a handheld that is as powerful as a home console. Or basically it is the future form factor of video gaming.
Should PS5 be a more powerful PS4 pro?? I wouldn’t be interested even 1%. If PS5 was a PS4 that was instantly transferable from the TV to being globally mobile? I’d buy one day one.
2-3 years from now, chipsets will be cheaper for Tegra style hardware and being able to play Persona 6 any time anywhere or dip into a Battle Royale on PUBG/Battlefield/CoD/FIFA anywhere in the world anytime rather than having to wait till everyone is home in front of their TV’s? That’s where PlayStation needs to go next.
Nintendo just evolved gaming and everybody needs to copy this next gen, and the know it.
@KingSandyRavage Nah. People still want powerful games consoles under their big screen TVs. The Switch is going to have a difficult second year anyway. Nothing special coming out, and they need to fulfil their promise of an online service, and you know what Nintendo is like when it comes to online. They still use friend codes!!!
Those are some really awful nominations for half of these
Call of Duty gets nominated for best music, and NieR: Automata doesn't... that alone invalidates the entire list imo, absolutely ridiculous.
@Wesker “amazing, every word of what you just was wrong”
Friend codes are gone.
There would be no power trade off. That’s the point.
The next gen of consoles, the graphical leap will be even smaller than it was from PS3 to PS4 that it won’t really bring anything new to the table. If you can take the power of the PS4 fully mobile next gen however, then that’s a whole new ball game.
As for stating in January that nothing special is coming this year on Switch? That’s just... well... ??? ..... anyone?? I think you’d be safer with a cup and ball.
Bayonetta 3
Metroid Prime 4
Shin Megami Tensei
Pokemon RPG (alone will outsell anything this year if it releases this year, 3 generations of gamers have been waiting for this game to be made, I think Nintendo were waiting for their main platform to be fully mobile before finally making it)
Re-releasing the best game on Wii u is a clever move as it will bring it to millions of gamers who never got to play it - Donkey Kong Country: Jungle Freeze - the best platforming game ever made, played by about 10 people.
That’s just console exclusives known by second week in January, not to mention they’ve rumoured a new 1080.
Multi format you can add Street Fighter collection mega Man 11, mega Man x collection, Bloodstained, Valkyrie Chronicles,
I’ve lost £100’s to Switch preorders half way through January.
@KingSandyRavage So how do you populate your friends list? You're naming games that are a long way off. All you've seen of those games is a logo. Donkey Kong County: Jungle Freeze is not the best platforming game ever made. First of all, it's a Donkey Kong Country game...
@Wesker those games are as viable as anything else mentioned for 2018.
Donkey Kong country is one of the best platforming game franchises around and always has been both critically and sales figures, if you don’t rate them you either haven’t got a clue or you’ve never played one.
Those games are onkyna long way off as you’re calling a years worth of games in early January. Same as most of the games on all formats are a long way off.
You’ve also obviously not got a switch and never even used one so good experience to pool your opinions from.
@KingSandyRavage "Donkey Kong Country: Jungle Freeze - the best platforming game ever made, played by about 10 people." Those are quite the sales figures.
@Wesker I know, that’s my point. Thanks for agreeing with me.
Bring that game to an install base over 10,000,000 already and it’ll now get an audience it deserves
