So, Metal Gear Survive. We've thought for a while now that Survive could be the greatest game ever made and it'd still be torn to shreds by fans of the series, but now that the game's released, we want to know your opinion on the matter.
Those who have played Survive seem rather divided thus far. Some critics are calling it terrible, while others are saying that it's surprisingly fun. Our own Hands On article treads that latter path -- it isn't perfect by any means, but there's some enjoyment to be had.

That went about as well as expected.
Being charged $10 for an additional save slot.
There’s a little firestarter.
Other than that, I know what the polls say before clicking.
I think the game is piggybacking off the MGS name but can see why as if they just called it survive it would hardly sell at all. The paying £7.99 for a second character/ save slot is mind boggling so not sure who should get the hate for that the developers or Konami.
Not sure anything deserves hate and I always think games should be judged by their merits.
From what I have seen, on a few reviews and play through videos is that it is a pretty standard survival crafting game which is not really my thing.
I do think, though, that Konami deserves some flack. Despite the way things went with Kojima, they still have a great franchise, they had the amazing engine and legacy for gameplay from MGSV and their response two years later is really quite a cheap cash grab, providing an average title in a sub genre that is already past peak oversaturation. If the game had done something new with the genre then great but it does look pretty average.
Game looks like a fun spin-off it's just Konami and their stupid business decisions that is ruining the game.
This game feels like a meme that Konami took seriously.
It seems like a decent enough game. The microtransactions are a big turn-off, but other than that, I can’t criticize the game too much, but it’s hard to look at the game objectively due to all the reports about Konami and how they have handled things. But I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
If I was hard up for games to play, then I’d look at this harder given the fun Fox Engine, but with the quality and quantity of my backlog, a simple $10 paywall kills it for me.
You can't say that Konami deserves the hate specifically for this game - although they don't exactly deserve praise either. The game doesn't deserve the 'Metal Gear' name and whoever came up with the concept AND added the Metal Gear name as well as the execution deserves the blame.
I was conflicted on the last question. It was because of konamis insistence to have lootboxes and pay to save that makes the game itself deserve the hate and makes it a stain on a great franchise. Let me pick both.
Let’s put it this way
This is essentially the Metroid Prime: Federation Force of the Metal Gear franchise it’s a harmless spin-off but when we throw in those business decisions & the company behind it here comes the cancer storm...
@bindiana people dont mention taht the game is $40 not $60 and offers a full campaign plus online mode. also, you can change anything about your character including looks, gender, class, whatever at any time and you can make loadouts so there is not really a need for another slot. most games today only allow one save slot per account unless they are single-player rpg's.
Extra character slots in other games cost similar prices so the figure is not over the top.
To save myself alot of typing I'll say that I initially wanted nothing to do with the game because of the Kojima drama, but(!) my game share buddy bought it so I at least wanted to see what they did to a series I loved and were using the name of. I hate to say it, but I'm enjoying it thus far. I didn't like the beta and I don't generally like survival games like this but I'm excited to get off work and keep playing. So all the drama aside, as someone else pointed out, it is a 40 dollar game, not 60. Sure the 10 dollar 2nd character thing is bs but the game itself, isn't bad.
I can’t say I’m not interested in trying the game, but I don’t know if I’m comfortable giving Konami my money after the reports came out on how they treat their employees
I don't really get all this hate. The game sounds pretty fun to me! I won't buy it now because I'm trying to catch up with my backlog first, but I plan to buy it later.
This game was essentially an eternal "maybe I'll look at it at some point" in my head, and only because it's Metal Gear. After that pay extra for more saves thing, my interest tanked. I'm tired of overtly stupid microtransactions, and it's pretty clear Konami doesn't care at this point.
@Punished_Boss_84 that is madness!!! $10 for a save slot WTF
@RenanKJ Kojima, the cancellation of the new Silent Hill, terrible remasters, patchinko of big franchises F Konami.
@Flaming_Kaiser I understand the hate on Konami, but what about the game? I mean, none of your arguments refer to the game itself.
I'm honestly not sure.
As @Derpie1 mentioned, it’s getting the same kind of hatred spin-offs of popular franchises get when they stray away from their roots: MP Federation Force, Hey! Pikmin, Star Fox Assault, DmC, Dragon Age II (not a spin-off, but IIRC it was bashed for scrapping what made the first one great) all received this treatment.
I believe only time can tell if these games actually become “stains” on their respective franchises: if they end up being self-contained experiences while the “main” series goes on, well, I think there isn’t much to hold a grudge for; I mean, now that Metroid Prime 4 has been announced, I don’t think there’s any reason to hate on Federation Force, as it will clearly remain detached from the core series nor will it replace it or “ruin” it.
So I believe we should see where the franchise goes next, and then we’ll be able to judge if this game took a beloved series to a place it didn’t need to be, or if remains a stand-alone experience to compliment the core MGS games.
Edit: of course if Konami avoided shooting itself in the foot with those “buy a new save slot separately” shenanigans, MGSS would have a way easier time 😂
@clvr actually one part of Federation Force is canon
The ending it’s a Tease for Metroid Prime 4/gives you a little story insight...
@RenanKJ the game i find is good played alot worst than this but like in life you will never please everyone
£10 save slots?
Nah I would rather buy plague inc and Raiden v in the current sale. Your taking money from other developers konami and making them homeless!
It all looks like a Phantom Pain expansion that happens to omit the content that Kojima Productions weren't allowed to finish. Digital Foundry's video looked you just build fences and prod zombies with a stick so it doesn't like it builds on the excellent gameplay of V, and it runs worse too.
@Cpt_Price not yet, maybe over the summer. I dont have the time this part of the year Im afraid.
@3MonthBeef I think your under estimating the purchasing power of the mgs fans. Casuals dont like mgs as its too hard to control with a convoluted story. I would be hugely surprised if this breaches the top 5.
@brutalpanda Please name these "most games" that only allow one save slot. I've never come across it ever. I know some online only games do it, but I only learned that fact yesterday.
@emonemo420 why do we think that a $20 difference in price means all shortcomings of the game and bad practices (MTX) are to be forgiven? MTX do not belong in a paid game, period.
I haven't even looked at the microtransactions in the game, I did see the 9.99 2nd character mtx and that is sad to see. konami, I think, isn't doing all that well and need to make money where they can? I'm grabbing at straws here. I see the 20 off as there reasoning for using kojimas "property" (yes konami owns it).. and the extra is then trying to make money. then again im baked and just wanna enjoy my Friday... lol happy gaming
@Yowza Zelda BOTW says Hi. So does Last Guardian, and Ratchet and Clank, and Horizon Zero Dawn, and Knack. and any Telltale game.. and etc.. It's pretty common, and I am surprised you have never played a game with this single master save file before, it often feels like the bane of my existence.. so I am thinking that's a lot of games you have not played.
"Does it deserve the hate?"
The real question is if it can Survive the hate. Eh? Never mind.
Seems like a decent game on its own, but it looks like a survival styled re-skin of MGSV. I've played enough of that game as is. Konami, get back to me when you plan on using the Fox engine to remaster Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. And why not remaster MGS 1, 2, and 3 (preferably as an actual GAME rather than a Pachinko machine) while you're at it since the controls in those games are awful? I know they have their fans, and they certainly deserve them, but MGS 2 and 3 feel like I'm struggling more with camera and controls than actual enemies.
Awful and boring game leeching off the name of one of the biggest franchises in gaming history
I see this game as a spin-off in the same way Gwent, Mario Kart, and Tales from the Borderlands are spin-offs from their respective franchises. It's a game for 'multiplayer people'.
I've never been particularily interested in the MGS games though, I played (and finished) Metal Gear Solid 3, but that's about it.
I looked at the user reviews on Metacritic on launch day and thought "No game deserves this" so I bought it then and there, from PSN (£34.99 when I could have got it for £21.99 online and waited a day for the post).
Survival isn't my genre (I'm MMORPG) and I'm up to the first mission where you activate your first wormhole portal and unlock a container with R2. Haters gonna hate. This is money well spent. The game is good.
F*#k Konami
@Giygas_95 In the past big games were few and far between so people got used to the quirks of the controls. Im gonna be honest I love mgs 3, going back to it now on Vita I cant stand the controls either.
@themcnoisy Glad to know I'm not alone. I was probably okay with bad controls until I played MGS4 which controls fine and especially MGSV which controls amazingly. Funny thing is, despite a pretty low frame rate, I get more enjoyment out of Snake Eater on 3DS because of a simple addition: crouch walking.
@Derpie1 oh I didn’t know that, as I haven’t played it. It just doesn’t appeal to me, and I understand the frustration it caused as I’m a big Metroid fan and I also was expecting/hoping for something different that this spin-off, but I think it’s not fair to shoot it down just because of what it isn’t. Again, I haven’t played it, but it doesn’t look like a horrible game; it’s just not the Metroid game we were waiting for.
@Yowza yeah last years GOTY breath of the Wild has one save slot and requires you to use another account if you want to start over without deleting, same as this game. Sunset Overdrive, you only get one character and one save slot. Most games have automatic saving on one file. Evil Within. These are just some I played recently that I can think off the top of my head. Really it’s not a big deal since you can change anything about your character any time and you get to unlock coins in events, right now they are giving 30 coins per day for 20 days. I’m sure there will be more opportunities. The only thing MtX does in this game is lower the difficulty which is in a lot of other games, AC to name one. Lets you unlock all collectibles or forza h3 that gives you map for unlocks.
@Party_Cannon huh. I guess I never noticed. I've played ratchet and HZD and evil within but never noticed because I'm the only one playing games in my house.
Can't you just back up your save to the cloud and redownload it if you REALLY wanted another save file for whatever reason in those games?
So I guess the only difference is MGS wants to charge you for this weird privilege?
@KingSandyRavage how much have you played so far?
Enough for me to turn it off and have zero interest in affording it any more of my time and any of my money
It's a really really good mgs despite what the KojiDrones on the sites tell you and for me I have 20 hours in it already it's that fun but alas the ones who have no brain cells and are sheep are giving it bad scores and reviews pu rely because it doesn't have a hacks name on it... if it had that dirty hacks name throughout the game flashing all over screen it would get 10 out of 10 ..
good game ruined by brain dead sheep kojidrones and I rate it a solid 9 out of 10.
It should be games like vermintide given these scores and receiving backlash especially after abandoning the first game with promises of updates to game and graphics as well as one X and ps4 pro support ; fat shark literally ran with the money and made a cash grab sequel just like monochrome Ltd have done with steam users who bought contagion.
I've played MGS since it arrived and I love it. The game is far from perfect and Konami do deserve some of the hate they are getting, but I think more people need to give the game a good play before jumping on the hate wagon. It's really fun especially with a friend! As for the charging for extra character slots? It's very cheeky, but I don't really care? I don't need another character? As a survival game it's great fun, just don't think of it as an MGS game
