While there are tons of themes available on the PlayStation Store, you might have something particular in mind that isn't available. You're able to create your own backgrounds by selecting a screenshot from your PS4's Capture Gallery, but the just released firmware update 5.50 allows you to go a step further. Using a USB storage device, you're able to import and use any image you like, allowing you to truly personalise your console. But what's the process? Let us talk you through it.
How to Create Custom PS4 Wallpapers From USB
Here are the steps you'll need to follow in order to set your favourite image as your PS4's wallpaper via USB.
Save Your Image Onto a USB Storage Device
On your computer, save your selected image onto your USB device. You'll want to make sure you have a folder called 'IMAGES' in which to paste the picture. Safely remove the device from your computer and pop it into one of the USB slots on your PS4.
Go to 'Themes' in the Settings Menu
Head to the Settings menu on your PS4 and scroll down to 'Themes'. Once you're there, click 'Select Theme' and scroll to the bottom of your installed themes, where you'll find a new option, named 'Custom'. Select it.
Select and Set Your Image
Within the 'Custom' option, hit 'Select Image' and, provided your USB device is plugged in, you'll be able to select 'USB Storage Device'. This will then bring up any images you saved to the 'IMAGES' folder on your USB device. Select your favoured picture.
The PS4 will now ask if you want to crop your image. You can do this by zooming in with the right analogue stick and move the whole image with the left stick. Once you're happy with the position of your image, press X to confirm.
Fine Tune the UI to Match
Once you've set your image, you'll be taken back to the 'Custom' screen. There are two more options for you to take a look at. The first is a checkbox labelled 'Make Function Area Dim'. When active, this will overlay a subtle gradient behind the very top icons on the main menu, making them easier to read depending on your background. If you're using a light or colourful image, you should probably keep this on.
The last option is 'Select Colour', which sets the colour for parts of the UI where the wallpaper isn't shown. You can leave it as the default blue, or choose a colour that best matches your selected background.
Click 'Apply'
Once you're happy with all the options and your custom wallpaper is looking good, select 'Apply' to set everything in place. Ta-da!

Is it a swift process?
Well I guess Intl women's day theme went out of the window!
Thanks for the steps, will work on this when I get home today!
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi well done 🤣
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi it's been taylor made for sammy.
@Rudy_Manchego Why? Taylor is a global superstar and an inspiration for many young girls! I'm a big fan!
Cool. Being able to create and load my own wallpapers was always one of my favorite features of the Playstation Vita.
It's too bad there isn't a way to include music, but this is still a good update, and long overdue.
@get2sammyb Sorry trying to make a bad pun with the pluralising of women's over the singular Lady swift. I am seriously off my game today.
It's also important that the flash drive be formatted in MS DOS Fat.
@NorrinRadd who are you calling fat?
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
LOL! I must have been staring in the mirror again!
@Rudy_Manchego Oh no! It's not you, I read your comment wrong! It's my bad, sorry.
@Neolit
Actually I was FAT long before 32.
exFAT works even better.
