Sony’s rolled out the revised TV & Video section for the PlayStation 4 in the United States, bringing it up to speed with the European version. This essentially adds an additional layer to the browsing experience, but allows the platform holder to push sponsored content in your direction – some of which you can tailor by logging in to your YouTube account.
This was a divisive update when it rolled out in the Old World, but we’re more or less used to it now. We’re sure that those of you across the Atlantic will get over it once the initial shock wears off. Feel free to rant and rave in the comments section below.

I actually like it. Mostly because sometimes the apps would just change position, and I hated it
Non-issue
Welp. This is a thing that happened.
I wish Netflix would have been left as its own app. It sucks to have to take an extra step and wait for this now app to load before I can open Netflix. (Canadian version)
I havent played around with it yet. Only noticed it today. Its weird but im sure ill get used to it. Im one of the ppl who liked the PS3 XMB so im sure i will 'Seven of Nine' it and adapt.
Right into the folder named "useless apps"...and back to playing Ratchet & Clank.
I was surprised, hated it, and then over it, all in the span of a minute or two.
I was just on my PS4 about an hour ago and didn't notice. I rarely if ever use my PS4 for multimedia, I still use my PS3 for DVD's and the occasional blu-ray - no need to burn out my PS4 disc drive - and I have a Fire TV Stick which I really like now after giving it a scathing review for it's uselessness when I got it before the holidays. And then I use my Switch for...well gaming.
OK here's a question - why does that big crowded box say - Everything you love all in one place - yet right next to the TV & Video box is a separate PS Vue app? Seems a bit redundant and also not all in 1 place.
Anybody here using Vue? I dropped my cable tv, just internet now, currently trying out FuboTV for a 1 week free trial but still not sure which streaming service to give my money to. My cable company hasn't cut off the basic tv service yet so I'm, um, borrowing it until they do so I haven't rushed to sign up for another service yet. DirectTV Now still has $10 month for 3 months, really need to get on that before they change their minds. We hardly watch any TV but we need BBC America for when Dr. Who finally decides to start it's new season. They must be waiting for E3 to tell us when it will be on.
It's fine. Whatever.
I like the new compared to the old which was annoying and stupid. Hopefully no more apps i do not use are added to the line. Even better let us delete, delete, ect until we have only the apps we use displayed.
Noticed this when I was going on Hulu. No big deal for me.
@rjejr I tried Vue for a few months, really couldn't get used to it's layout to be honest. Used it mostly on a Roku. Honestly I haven't really found a "good" live TV streaming service, I definitely won't touch Sling TV with a 40 foot cattle prod either!
I guess I'm fortunate to have a friend that recently gave me access to his Xfinity and Google Plus services, so i'm covered for all things TV and music related.
@RedMageLanakyn I was thinking of checking out Sling, curious to hear what is the problem with it.
@Tasuki On Roku the app would crash constantly, and the audio/video would be out of sync most of the time. I tried it on PC and it was a little better, but it would have the desync problems plus low quality/buffering issues on a solid ethernet connection. I tried it both at it's beginning and again about two months ago, and same issues even with different equipment and ISPs. The interface was really nice though, just not worth the $25-$30 a month I was paying for all the issues I had with it.
Pre-order cancelled.
Talking about TV, the HBO where I live is really lazy, they still don't have an app on PS4. Netflix has since the beginning of PS4, and Prime Video is a recent service over here and they already created an app on PS4.
Edit: We don't have Hulu here, lol.
@EUROCOMANDANT I had wondered what the hell happened?! PS4 has always had a garbage interface since day one,¬ compared to PS3, and this does not help... >_>
I noticed the new update at work. Not a big deal, and it's not like I can downgrade anyways.
I use the Youtube app more than I use Amazon or Netflix so find it slightly annoying that I can't move that tile closer but other than that it doesn't really bother me. Sponsored content gets me a bit but again it's not a huge deal and not that intrusive.
Similar to the amazon fire stick format, I actually dig it.
I just wish the TV apps could be treated like games, that way I could just have a folder named TV and be done with it. But nope, gotta pucker your lips for the all-mighty ad space
It's laggier too, yay!
@rjejr I have used Fubo TV and PS Vue in the past and I liked them both. I tend to like Fubo TV more because it has more sports channels and the Travel Channel (at least here in the states) which my son and I watch alot of. So in the end it depends what channels you are looking for as they all offer different channels.
Yea. I was like wtf when i first saw it but i like it.
@Tasuki Thanks for the reply. I'm not really into sports, just had to watch opening day for the NY Mets which we almost always win before the injuries kick in and we sink into obscurity. So a free week may be all I need. 😢 And unlike @Gamer83 who's Yanks YES network is on several streaming services the Mets continue to be 2nd rate and SNY is hard to come by. Probably the Yanks have more ownership over Yes, Sny is owned by several cable companies. I'd keep FuboTV but $40 for mostly sports doesn't work for me. Really we hardly watch any tv, maybe 4 channels, so I feel like $20, Slings price, is right for me. Fortunately there are so many options now price competition should keep them all lower than the cable bill I cancelled which was about $75 for tv.
And to get us back on topic before you have to ban us both for derailing the thread, my first opinion of this after looking at it last night was they just copied the Fire TV stick interface like @ZAKtheRIPPER said. The big difference is Fire has a lot of channels, but it seems like PS4 just has the same 3 - Netflix, Hulu, Vue - repeated over and over again. It seems to me like PS3 had a larger selection, but maybe it's just the way they are presented.
And I know Sony has Vue to promote, but it's disappointing to me to see all if these other streaming services and apps on Xbox, Roku, Fire etc but not on PS4. Sure it has the big ones, but many channels have their own apps these days - AMC, FX, IFC, CW, all the major networks - PS4 seems really limited. And not just in the new interface, I searched the store as well.
Still about 99% more than Switch, but way behind Xbox. Fire TV it is. I'm not a fan of the Chromecast dongle in my bedroom, can't recommend that at all. Still haven't tried a Roku but I'm good with the cheap Fire Stick for now.
@RedMageLanakyn I never really thought about interfaces until I started using the Fire Stick as ALL of my viewing before was on my 2 PS3, living room and bedroom, and it worked just fine, just pick the app I want. But I notice now. Mostly it's about channels though, BBCA, SNY, ABC, CW. I think it was $90 to get them all with my cable company so I finally said enough. One nice thing about streaming is the ease of cancelation. I can sign up for a service w/ BBCA for 3 months or SNY for the baseball season. And HBO during GoT or Westworld next month. The constant monthly cable bill is so last century. 😛
One day I loved it, the next I sat despondent and heartbroken over a new interface. Thankfully I have all that stuff on my television. Change, what a horrible thing.
Before to scroll to Netflix I simply had to push down and press X. Now I have to press X - wait 3 seconds and then push X again. My life is unchanged.
I wouldn't say this makes my life easier.
Funny I never use my PS4 for media stuff...
I have a iPad/iPhone for that
So it turns out 2 days ago SNY came to YoutubeTV and Directv Now as well as FuboTV so I'm never going back to a cable box, that ship has sailed. My wife is still mad though about the canceled home phone line, free cell phone Wi-Fi services are still a bit spotty. But she'll adjust. 😊
