Ubisoft sure knows how to sell video games, with Far Cry 5 more than doubling the sales of its numbered predecessor to become the fastest selling title in the franchise’s history. New data from the French publisher reveals that more than 50 per cent of the copies were sold digitally through venues such as the PlayStation Store, illustrating just how rapidly download transactions are growing.
According to the company, the open world shooter is now the second biggest launch in the company’s history, with only Tom Clancy’s The Division faring better. “Far Cry 5, like the real Montana, is a vast and gorgeous playground filled with colourful stories for players to enjoy and share,” said Ubisoft bigwig Laurent Detoc. “We’re grateful to newcomers and fans of the series who have joined us in Hope County and have collectively grown our community.”

I'm having way more fun with it than I thought I would. It's a blast!
this game is pretty great so far but Sprint running is pretty annoying
Absolutely loving this game so far and I think we've finally reached the tipping point for digital games. I now buy all my games digitally and see no real reason to buy physical anymore unless I can get them significantly cheaper
More than 50% of the sales were digital? That's pretty significant.
I think I'll probably stay mostly physical until we actually start getting pre-order discounts on digital games. The convenience factor is nice, but it's not as much of an issue with a home console for me.
I'm much more likely to go digital with future Switch games, as you get 5% of what you spend back through MyNintendo and don't have to worry about carrying around a bunch of cartridges when you take it places, but Amazon and Best Buy preorders are still a better deal, so I don't know how I'll trend in the future.
Aside from a small handful of releases, I've gone almost entirely digital on my PS Vita and don't regret it one bit.
It's a FAR CRY from the sales of Primal.
I will see myself out.
As long as Best Buy sticks to it's 20% off new games, I'll keep buying physical, but no doubt this news is huge and it shows that NPD needs to start tracking digital sales for those reports to be taken seriously going forward.
@Gamer83 They do! They're just lacking Nintendo and some PC data on NPD. It's the UK charts that don't have the digital data, but I believe that changes next year.
Do code redemptions count toward digital sales? There's been a lot of codes bundled with external "gaming" harddrives and GPU's.
This has blown up so much it created an injury.
Fart Cry.
So far i have liberated Dutch's Island and acquired Boomer. On my 1080p tv Pro combo FC5 looks gorgeous and has smooth frames. Oh and it is fun.
Not much talk about the Arcade Mode that is a lot of fun. Not only is Arcade fun but money and perk points are earned and are added to story mode.
The sales success the first week is not surprising. The hype, excellent advertising, many gamers ripe for their next big kick, and the legion of Far Cry fans, all equates to big release sales.
Digital is without a doubt the future. I know most don't want to hear it but it's a fact.
That said I don't think physical will ever fully go away it just won't be the most popular choice in a few years.
Wow can’t believe nobody commented on the pushsquare review. Myself and most the comments I’ve read are really positive. Can’t believe it reviewed so poorly on here.
I watched more vids and it does look fresher than 4 in a lot of ways. My opinion of it has changed a lot, think I will give it a punt sooner or later.
I'm suddenly finding myself interested in this game. I won't be getting it for a while though until I finish the Uncharted and God of War series. Then I really should try to play through the Mass Effect Trilogy I got a while back.
I often buy games physically on my Switch to save memory. On PS4, there's almost no reason to buy physically since the space advantage doesn't apply what with games installing to the HDD. That said, I've often bought physical copies on PS4 since I can usually get them cheaper. I wish I had gotten more of my PS4 games digital though.
@kyleforrester87 its pretty good fun I would recommend it, maybe hang on for a discount if your on the fence
@Giygas_95
The advantage to physical is if you're part of the Best Buy Gamer's Club or have Amazon Prime, you can get new games 20% off which makes them cheaper than the digital counterpart. Quite frankly, it's asinine, there is no reason games on the digital store front should be over $50, and even that's pushing it.
@Gamer83 Yeah, the Amazon discount is the only reason I'd ever really buy physically. I really prefer digital copies, but if I can get a game for $51 instead of $64, well... that's an obvious choice. I guess I was more meaning it makes more sense to own a digital copy than a physical copy on PS4, but when it comes to the actual act of buying, physical wins out due to price.
@gingerfrog 7/10 = good on this site! We liked it!
That's funny I bought "2 physical" copies lol. Guess I'm too old school. Game is dope tho
I've started buying Digital versions of the games that I know I will enjoy and touch wood so far my Game loving Radar is working well. The downside is that you can't sell it on when you've finished it but the good side is that you don't have to buy it again when you double dip...or triple dip.....
Oh And I love Far Cry 5 as well...I went slightly off topic then I think?
