Juan's first Metroidvania adventure, Guacamelee!, remains one of our favourite modern examples of the genre, mixing addictive exploration, challenging platforming, satisfying combat, and a whacky sense of humour to great effect. Guacamelee! 2 is set to continue this trend. It recaptures the first game's compelling gameplay and irreverent tone, and we're excited to find out where Juan's new journey will take him. We do know that he'll be spending more time as a chicken.
Our brief demo was a two-player co-op affair, and it's the same level that you'll have seen covered during previous events. You start off playing as Juan in his normal form, beating up skeletal bad guys in ponchos as per usual, but you're quickly introduced to the sequel's more fleshed out chicken form. As a chicken, Juan can now fight, and with the new Chicken Shot ability, you can even break purple blocks, opening up new paths. The writing is just as silly as we remember from the original, and equally, the gameplay is sharp, easy to grasp, and satisfying to perform.
The living and dead worlds collide once more in Guacamelee! 2, and the two merged together for a tough platforming challenge ahead of the demo's final bout against the boss. It's good to see that the level design remains inventive and forces you to use Juan's abilities in interesting ways. The co-op works just as it does in the original, with drop-in for up to four players, and it's always fun tackling the combat and platforming sections with a buddy.
Visually the sequel is a nice upgrade from the first game, too. Initially, it seems that the games are identical, but there's more detail in the environments and better animations that really benefit the stylised presentation. We don't have a date yet for Guacamelee! 2, but it appears to be wonderfully polished already, which is an encouraging sign. We're confident the sequel will recapture all that's great about Guacamelee!, and we can't wait to see more.
Guacamelee! 2 is shaping up to be another great Metroidvania title, and we're excited to see where Drinkbox Studios takes us on Juan's latest adventure. Are you looking forward to Guacamelee! 2? Piledrive the comments below and let us know.

I really enjoyed the first, but it was less crowded when it launched and PS4 "loved indies" a bit more than they do now.
Hope to get this, but worried it'll drop off into obscurity pretty quickly.
@kyleforrester87 This year i dont have any timeslots left there is to much. I have so many releases i still have to start Uncharted 4. I think i have to finish the short the games and leave the RPG's for later the problem is the most i have are those. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser yeah, I know the original released earlier on PS3 (and others) but it wasn't until it came out on PS4 and we had a bit of a drought that I felt inclined to put time into it. And am I glad I did, it's awesome.
I don't think any love has been lost for indies, the simple reality is that there are an outrageous number of games on the platform these days so it's harder to stand out.
That said, I'm looking forward to this.
@get2sammyb I think it's pretty fair to say Sony relied on them quite a bit in the first year or so, and they seemed to be a bigger deal at press conferences. But it's to be expected, times change. Hopefully they'll be bigging them up again during the earlier years of PS5. Still, doesn't bode well for this game I think. As you say, too crowded in general.
@get2sammyb hey Sammy! The next game informer magazine will feature call of duty blacks ops 4.
First one was so so good. Hope we get a release date soon, I don't need anymore info this is a definite buy from me!
@tulaib_100 Gamespot magazine?
Loved the first one and after Coco more people will take notice.
Just tell me when and where.
Is co-op only local?
The first was one of the first games I played on my Vita and I loved it! Really looking forward to this! I'll find time. 😂
I will most definitely get this. POLLO POWER!!!
@get2sammyb I think they meant GameStop aka Game Informer
Never cared much for the first one. Only DrinkBox game I've enjoyed thus far was Severed (which I absolutely loved).
@Ralizah Same here. Tried Guacamelee and just couldn’t get into it. Severed was quite good on the Vita.
I was literally playing the first one last night! I love it, I think it's excellent (quite challenging in places though). It's been one of the highest rated games on most consoles for years now, so I imagine there will be big interest in the sequel.
Day 1 for me. I just hope the normal ending is not the bad one, and true ending is not hidden in BS platforming.
I like the first game but I feel the game is wasting my time by hiding the true/good ending in a very difficult platforming while the rest of the game is easy/not hard.
