Uncovered as part of an excellent Kotaku report on Mafia III’s missteps, a new BioShock game is in development at a top-secret 2K Games studio next door to Hangar 13. According to the article – penned by the ever-reliable Jason Schreier – the Mafia maker was working on an espionage adventure, before it slipped into development hell. Meanwhile, a new team was established next door, and word eventually got out that it was working on a new BioShock game.
The article reads: “Some developers at Hangar 13 looked over and wondered, ‘Why are we not there?’ The Parkside [the codename for the new BioShock game] team was working with the familiar Unreal Engine rather than volatile proprietary technology, and BioShock has a ton of cachet among developers and fans. Between Mafia III’s mediocre reviews and [Hangar 13's new project's] constant shifts, some members on the Hangar 13 team were desperately hoping to move next door.”
Not everyone got that move, of course, largely because it sounds like the project is still early. “They’re trying to be really smart about figuring out what the core thing is,” one anonymous source told the site. “They’re careful about not falling into the same problem every studio has, where they have too many people and nothing for them to do.” This probably rules out an announcement at E3 or any other impending events, but the cat’s still out of the bag: a new BioShock is in production.

Yes, please. I thought all three of the BioShock games had issues, but their highs were among the highest highs of the PS3 era.
It's obviously Bioshock for Vita guys.
@NathanUC Finally! Bring on the port begging...
If it’s “top secret” then how does anyone know about it???
@get2sammyb out of curiosity, what issues did you have with the first? I'm not looking for an argument or anything, just genuinely interested in your view is all.
IIRC the second is the only universally meh one.
Be nice to see this game, and Unreal Engine too! Another win for Epic's baby
Bioshock series is great, including the second game, imo.
I also think the second game is underrated. More of the same, but very good. And Minerva's Den is superb.
@shafedog247 If you read the Mafia article, the people working on this new BioShock weren't even allowed to tell the Hangar 13 folks what they were up to. But it eventually got out internally, and now anonymous sources have told Kotaku.
I assumed this was the case a long time ago, I am actually surprised we haven't heard more about it by now. 2k Marin is supposedly behind it and they made the equally excellent Bioshock 2 so I trust them to make a good game.
Oh my! Yes, I kindly would be excited. BioShock is one of Gen7's greatest franchises (the other of course is Mass Effect).
@YummyHappyPills Aww, BioShock 2 improved on the first in many areas. It did lack the wow factor, and I admit that when I first played it I was underwhelmed, but on repeat playthroughs it's really grown on me.
I hope its more in keeping with the atmosphere of Rapture as I wasn't so keen on the last game
Please don't play with my emotions.
A Bioshock PS5 launch title would blow my mind. I do think leaving Rapture behind and continuing to look forward is the way to go.
Funnily enough, I actually only played the 2nd game, lol. I really enjoyed it, but I've never felt a huge need to get deep into these games.
i've started bioshock2 recently and am absolutely loving it ! Can't wait to get through the remaining chapters and number 3 in anticipation.
Hopefully this is all that "leaks" so they don't get fake or unreliable story elements out, get a negative reaction from the internet, and cancel the game altogether.
YES YES YES the hype is real I loved Bioshock All three games and the DLC's Burial At Sea Episode 2 probably one of the highest point in gaming for me.
Just recently played the remasters and they are brilliant!!! If this rumour is true, I look forward to seeing what they come up with.
I liked Bioshock Infinite, and would certainly play another one.
Played them all again on rerelease for the ps4. Amazing storytelling in a sometimes less than amazing package. If they can get this right (And that's a big if. Presumably Ken Levine is not involved) then it could be incredible. Let's just not have Bioshock: Andromeda for everyone's sake.
@get2sammyb Totally agree on Bioshock 2, terribly overlooked game, just because of the setting. I thought it was a nice touch how the villain's ideological views were the complete opposite of Andrew Ryan's.
Infinite was a disappointment imo (still fun to be fair) but I'd love to see a fourth game, I wonder where they'll go for the setting.
I know it's cool to hate on Infinite these days but it remains one of my favourite experiences. Glad they're doing something with it, as much as I love rapture I hope they're doing something original.
Hopefully it'll be good and still capture what made the predecessors so memorable.
@Dpishere 2k Marin studio is closed I think?
fan of all the Bioshocks so would love another.
really hope we get another Mafia game! the idea for Mafia 4 based on the film Casino sounds great to me.
What a coincidence. I’m currently playing through Bioshock 1 right now on my PS3 for the first time. I must say the setting of Rapture and the way it tells its story is amazing, even in 2018. I picked up the trilogy for under £5 on PS3, I plan to play them all over the coming weeks. I decided against getting the PS4 remaster as from videos I’ve seen it seems to lose some of its atmosphere on the remaster, like missing fog/smoke/water effects, and it looks too clean. I’m certainly not disappointed with the PS3 version, even if it is 10 years old.
Love the original trilogy but would need to be really original to capture my attention. More if the same would kill the franchise.
@David187 You are thinking of Irrational which made the first game and Infinite, Marin is still up and running since they are owned by 2K
@Dpishere 'I assumed this was the case a long time ago. I am actually surprised we haven't heard more about it by now.'
How exactly did you come to that assumption ages ago? Do you work for the developers or something?
The article says that the project is in the early stages and it sounds like it has been pretty hush hush.
And I'm pretty sure the majority of the 2K Marin staff got laid off in 2013 after The Bureau: XCOM Declassified flopped.
@JohnnyShoulder This was rumored about many years ago.
fortnite clone with big daddies instead of regular people?
@Dpishere Not every rumour turns out to be true. If Push Square reported on every rumour they would lose some credibility.
Hope they go back to Rapture, love to return there for a new adventure
I own the PS4 Collection but never got around to playing, however I do hope this turns out to be true.
I do not see a reason to revisit the Bioshock world. I enjoyed the journey the 3 games took me on but they it should have ended there.
@Orpheus79V I wouldn't say his views were opposite of Andrew Ryan's. His views are supplementary to Ryan's. The game was made as a slight against Objectivism and the severe problems such an extreme ideology brings (funny how Ayn Rand was so resentful of one extreme ideology, that she decided to go extremist in the opposite direction). Fontaine wasn't there to promote a separate ideology, he was there to abuse and manipulate Ryan's ideology.
@-Juice- The villain of Bioshock 2 was Sofia Lamb, who was a collectivist. I wasn't referring to Frank Fontaine, who was dead in 2.
@Orpheus79V Oh, I thought we were talking about the first one. My bad!
