We’d love to know how many man-hours Insomniac Games has invested into Spider-Man’s web swinging system. The reality is this: there’s no point in making a Spidey game if you can’t get the traversal right, and it’s telling of the franchise’s disappointing video game legacy that PlayStation 2 title Spider-Man 2 is still considered the pinnacle of the series.
Until now, that is. Game Informer has published the first parts of its cover story, and the PlayStation 4 exclusive is sounding unsurprisingly ace. And yes, that all-important navigation seems like a key part of the upcoming title’s appeal, as it balances accessibility with creative freedom, making the entirety of Manhattan a sandbox for you to zip around in.
According to the magazine, the controls work as such: R2 allows you to run or fire out a web to the nearest building. When in a swing, you press X to jump out, and you can either web-zip off objects or fire off another web. Pressing R2 and L2 in conjunction takes you to the nearest perch point, where you can pause or "boost" off. You can also press L3 to dive, and use circle to “round” corners.
The takeaway from Game Informer, who got hands on time with the title, is that it’s fluid and fast – but most importantly, it’s skill-based. This means that, while the title’s easy enough to pick up and play, it allows for more creative manoeuvres once you get to grips with things. Even more pertinently, there’ll be upgrades that you unlock throughout the campaign designed to enhance your options.
Combat sounds similarly acrobatic, with environmental objects like barrels built into the system. You’ll build up a combo allowing you to execute finishers similar to in the Batman: Arkham games, but mobility is the key to the fighting system as you whip from one foe to the next, taking them down one at a time.
As has already been revealed, there’ll be multiple suits in the game, including one inspired by Punk Spider-Man which will allow the hero to whip out a guitar and shockwave enemies with its sound. Apparently, other suits will have similarly unique abilities. And it’s worth noting that you will also play as Peter Parker and Mary-Jane throughout the campaign.
With regards to the open world itself, it’s sounding a lot like a Ubisoft collectathon. You’ll be able to take photos with the civilians that populate New York City, but you’ll also need to snap golden cats. There’ll be various bombs placed by Taskmaster that you’ll need to defuse, as well as rucksacks to recover and much, much more. Strongholds controlled by Kingpin? Check.
You’ll gain experience points by completing everything, which in turn will feed back into the character progression system. There’ll also be various gadgets that you’ll unlock, including a drone which can shoot its own webs. And that’s pretty much the bulk of the new details; do give Game Informer a click because they’ve put together this huge preview. Sounds good, doesn't it?

I must have watched that new minute long video twenty times now. It is mesmerizing.
Let's hope that if there are a lot of side quests that they are optional. I like collectibles and other stuff that you have to do but I don't want a game that is "do 10 side quests before you can attempt the next story mission". I don't really like when progression is tied to boring side quests, not to say this game will have bad side quests. The title looks promising but I hope there is not a lot of filler and busy work like a lot of open world games have. Keeping fingers crossed that it's awesome
Just an edit for previous comment. I do appreciate content and side missions but I like it when a game has a really engaging story and that the side stuff and filler is just there cause you wanna explore and just go off the path
Sounds amazing, i'm so hyped for this game, Shattered Dimensions is my fave Spidey game up to this point (proof that a good Spiderman game doesn't always have to be open-world) but this just seems to be on another level and could well be Spidey's 'Arkham Asylum' moment.
Nice classic shi😍 .word up son playa
Doesn't sound too dissimilar from Sunset Overdrive' - just more in keeping with Spider-Man/Peter Parker as to be expected.
I want an 'organic' open world Spider-Man game that offers a LOT of options, side quests etc. Open world sandboxes are a lot more interesting to me than just following a linear story as these games tend to be with so much stuff to do. Horizon:Zero Dawn offered a 'linear' story too but filled the world with exploration, side quests etc too - and games like Assassins Creed Origins, Far Cry 5 etc too.
Did the comments section change? I can see that there are comments (6) on my iPhone, but there’s nothing to click to view them. There’s the comments banner, then the leave a comment banner. No load comments link.
Spidey is sounding great!
Edit:
My comment shows when posted, but not the others.
Edit 2:
And now the load comments link appears.
@zimbogamer No, you’re right. I hated that in Mafia 3 where they forced you to do all those boring filler missions just to keep the story moving.
They’re cool when you’re stumbling on them while you progress through the canpaign, but not when mandatory.
@lacerz I think @antdickens has been fiddling with the comments code today so there may be a few bugs.
I think lots if developers put in a tonne of content because they think more is better but it's only better if it's organic and you feel like it's a reward and not a chore
I'm really intrigued that we'll get to play as Mary Jane, i hope it means they'll experiment with tones and maybe even genres (you could have it like a point 'n' click adventure where she's looking for something to use to escape a room or something). It would be intense from jumping as playing as a suped-up Spidey punching bad guys to playing as MJ trying to escape from one, the sudden shift could make you feel very vulnerable, i love when games do stuff like that lol
Fun traversal definitely makes open world games fun.
When it comes to the collectables and sidequests, I just hope they don't go overboard. After getting the open world stuff out of my backlog (barring MGSV), I don't know if I can handle another massive collectathon.
This just makes the game 1000000000% better
So...Miles. He exists in this universe. We saw him in the teaser. You play as Spider-Man and MJ. What if you’re more than one person as Spider-Man? The previews for Ready Player One even mention that there’s more than one Spider-Man...to Miles Morales.
A more mature Spidey handing the torch over?
I’m intrigued.
Sounds very good.
Must-have for me.
Pre-ordered.
But I still miss Resistance
@lacerz I do really hope Miles is in it. And not just his costume.
The web swinging sounds great. Quite looking forward to this!
@lacerz I can't replicate that problem... is it all OK again?
I'm guessing that they've gone down the organic route for the webbing, as opposed to the web cartridges, then. Makes sense!
@antdickens something similar just happened to me. I fixed by hitting refresh.
Sounds awsome. 😁
@ztpayne7 can you describe the issue so I can re-create it?
Can't wait. This is the big release for me this year. Good old superhero fun. As long as they keep it simple and entertaining, and don't turn it dark and depressive like most Western games, I know I will enjoy it.
Added in a video.
I know Amazing Spider-Man 2 gets a lot of hate but I remember really loving the web-slinging in that game. Am I just crazy?
This sounds so awesome, thanks for the video @get2sammyb
My hope is that this new Spider-Man can actually be better than Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction. That is still my all-time favorite super hero game. The versatility of the 100+ different moves for unique attacks, movement, and weaponization is incredible. I can't believe no other game has tried to copy that weaponization system.
@antdickens
Seems to be fine now.
@antdickens I just had the issue happen again on another article. I took a screenshot. Is there somewhere I can send it?
I will spend hours with this game, it looks so perfect.
Alot of my worries with this game have been washed away, thanks for the information.
@antdickens At the risk of sammy and shogun going off on me for derailing the thread - I hate the new time stamp, I can't tell if the thread is continually being commented on or if nobody has commented on it for hours, but more importantly, is the time my time - ie US - or UK? That would at least help me figure it out quicker.
As always, it's your site, do what you want, just giving my 2 cents worth of feedback, I'll get used to it, I get used to everything eventually, I'm a trooper.
Oh look, that previous post says "5 minutes ago" if anything under 60 minutes lists the amount of time that would be helpful. Good luck.
@rjejr I've not made any changes to the timestamps, but if for some reason the Javascript wasn't working for you it might display the actual date/time rather than the relative time (1 hour ago...) is it still happening or back to normal now?
@antdickens OK, I checked both here and NL and any article posted within the last hour (it's 9AM NY time to 2PM or 3PM there I guess, not sure when DST goes into effect by you) is showing how long it's been, any article prior to that is showing the actual time the post was made. Which is fine, just really glad it's back to the way ti was, trying to do time math across time zones was killing me. OK honestly time zones are just an excuse, time math kills me anyway. Have a good weekend, I'm off on vacation to Boston, but not PaxEast, it was a last second trip.
I'm going to spend a silly amount of time just web slinging around. NYC is doomed.
@antdickens Sorry to bother you again, but I just wanted to confirm that the way the time stamp works now is all newer comments - less than 60 minutes - read "×× minutes ago" and anything an hour or more gives the actual time the comment was made, not "×× hours ago" or "×× days ago".
Right now on both PS and NL on Chrome on my PC and Opera on my tablet it's minutes or the actual time.
Oh, I only thought to reply to you know b/c I saw your comment on the GoW review article but decided to post back here where our original conversation was so not to disrupt that article. Thanks.
@rjejr anything over 60 mins should still show as x hours ago, then once it's over 24 hours (or no longer the same day as your current day) will it go to "Day, Time"
@antdickens Thanks. Anything over 60 minutes just shows up as the time. This was about an hour ago, maybe 2 hours:
7:16am
And anything over 24 hours shows up as the day and time. This was from, well yesterday.
I have finally figured out it's in my time, so that does make it easier to figure out whether something is 1 hour old or 6 hours old.
OK, I'll live, go do something productive, maybe sammy will let you borrow his GOW review copy.
