At last, Activision has opened up about Spyro: Reignited Trilogy after weeks of rumours, leaks, and teases. As expected, the title features full remakes of the purple dragon's three original adventures, and from where we're sitting, it's looking fantastic. Check out the game in action in the above trailer.
The release date for the game is 21st September 2018, which lines up with what we saw earlier today on Amazon Mexico. It appears that Toys for Bob, the Skylanders studio, is indeed leading development. The trilogy looks to match Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in terms of price; it's available for pre-order at £34.99.
Check out the PlayStation Blog post for some insight from the developer.

Finally it's announced! And it looks superb. Really excited for this.
It looks great! Can't wait to replay these
Yay.
Odd choices for the platforms, and no exclusivity either, but hey ho, I'm sure we will find out why they omitted PC in time.
Hyped regardless.
Trolley.
Just a quick note before we all get hype, we're not tolerating any port begging in this comments section.
We're here to talk about the game and the game alone.
Anyway, looks LOVELY.
I had so much fun with the demo of the first game on PS1 back in the day, this will be a sure purchase for me.
@ShogunRok It does indeed look lovely. Same engine as Crash yet somehow looks like Crash 3 did on steroids.
Cant wait to see the complaining about no exclusivity though. /s
And as expected, the modern in-game graphics look better than the CG'd cover art back in the day.
@ShogunRok thanks for getting ahead of it because you know it was coming lol! Anyways looks terrific. September is going to be a VERY expensive gaming month
Looks great and glad the humour has been kept intact! Wonder how the flying sections are managed. They were the only downside to a trio of excellent games. Well, that and the other playable characters imho.
@YummyHappyPills I expect most gamers will be happy with the fact that there is no platform exclusivity this time. The more people that get to play these classics, the better. I also think that this will boost sales of the Crash Trilogy all over again.
WOOOOO! Finally!
Looks gorgeous.
@Turismo4GT Absolutely. And with the releases of that coming up, more people will be funnelled to Spyro on PS4 and Xbox One. Clever swines.
Spider-Man and Spyro? Poor wallet...
Spider-Man, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Spyro on three consecutive weeks! Starting to save now.
Riding around on a skateboard in Spyro: Year of the Dragon was my childhood and now I can relive it in glorious HD remastered graphics
But seriously, Spyro, Spiderman AND Shadow of the Tomb Raider all within 2 weeks of each other in September!... Holy Cannoli!
Well this certainly came out of nowhere.
They've confirmed Tom Kenny returns as Spyro (YAY), and other voices will return too.
@YummyHappyPills We leave the complaining to you. 😋🤣
And who knows maybe Crash would have never happend without Sony. 😁
Oh yeah nice.now all i need is parasite eve.sir daniel is back with medievil.and i believe syphon filter is next.word up son
@get2sammyb when can i pre-order this on PS4 ? i am waiting for it to get updated in Playstation Store to pre-order it
@porhawj2016 Hopefully soon!
I'm a fan of 3d platformers but have never played a Spyro game. Glad to see people hyped- but what makes them so well loved? Answers on a postcard, please.
@playstation1995 I would love to see a new Dark Cloud a remake would be great to. We could use some more colorfull platformers. 😁
@porhawj2016 It's up now in Europe as far as I can tell.
Nice! Never played a Spiro game before so will finally get the chance to play all three.
But September though...?Dragon Quest and Spider Man will have all my attention im afraid..
It's up on PS Store already!
@Mergatro1d Mainly just very well made 3D platformers of the PSone era. Tight gameplay, interesting little mechanics, nicely designed enemies, lots of secrets and collectibles. A decent dollop of humour as well.
Finally. And it looks fantastic. Not a timed exclusive as Crash though. September will be a busy month.
@get2sammyb never mind, i see it now in USA PSN Store so i am pre-ordering it now . damn, i pre-ordered two new games for two days in a row : Spider-Man digital deluxe Edition and Spyro Trilogy.
now where is pre-order for Red Dead Redemption 2 ?? Come on Rockstar and Sony, let me pre-order it now
@ShogunRok Thanks! Sounds right up my street
It's so beautiful.
Damn September gonna be most busy month for me
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Spryo Remastered Trilogy
Spider-Man
NBA 2k19
Glad to have the real Spyro back instead of that strung-out looking thing from the Skylanders games.
I'm not even waiting for news of a Switch port. I played the original to death on the PS1, and I'll platinum these on my PS4.
@porhawj2016 Nice!
@Mergatro1d If you've played Ratchet & Clank you'll be able to see the early DNA of it in Spyro.
@get2sammyb Yep but i need pre-order Red Dead Redemption 2 too. it is not in PSN Store yet
Finally the announcement is out. All the rumours started to annoy me. I'm surprised this has such a big following. Happy for the fans out there.
The smart thing to do is pre-order those games early if they don't have enough money in their wallet for buy those games in September that why i am doing it now and not worrying about no money in my wallet for those games if i don't pre-order them early so i am waiting for Sony to update Shadow of the Tomb Raider in PSN Store for pre-order when they reveal detail about it on April 27
September? Good luck with that, many games will be released that time.
@PS_Nation Yep too many games to buy for me..
Spyro trilogy
Spider-Man
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
NBA 2k19
but i already pre-ordered Spyro trilogy in few minutes ago and pre-ordered Spider-Man digital deluxe Edition yesterday so i need pre-order Shadow of the Tomb Raider soon
bought never played will this time round
As a Switch owner (go figure), I'm unimpressed by the leaked trailer omitting Nintendo Switch, especially with the N. Sane Trilogy being set for release there as well. However, well, let's be honest. Activision is Activision, and well, as far as platformers go, Nintendo consoles have always been the best place to go. I highly doubt Activision would miss out on more cash, especially given Switch merged both of Nintendo's markets (handheld and home).
There might be reasons for the N. Sane Trilogy not being there, one above all the "easier" linear level design provided by Crash over the vast, almost open-world levels Spyro is known for having. Perhaps a downgraded port is in the works, especially given Crash's departure from PS4 was first announced on a Nintendo Direct.
Also, the Stone Hill music at the beginning of the trailer is lit.
N. Sane Trilogy, this ain't.
It finally happened. Looks great too.
About time it was announced. Looks beautiful, and the original soundtrack was amazing so I can't wait to hear it remastered.
@AlexSora89 Would you like to talk about the game, or are you just here to port beg?
@AlexSora89 What do you mean the best place to go? Btw, this is really not the best place to talk about of another version for this game, ShogunRok already said that port begging will not be tolerated.
Edit: Now Sammy too. Oh snap!
Aww yeaaah
@get2sammyb Boy the day you moan for Bayonetta I'm coming for you
Either way, this looks FANTASTIC. It's clearly the Alchemy engine right? If so, it's odd this really does take aspects of Crash 3, namely looking at Toad Village and how a more open scene looks compared to the hallways of 1 and 2, and just runs with it.
Now to wait to see 2 and 3.
What we have seen so far are Toasty, Blowhard, Beast Makers, Artisans, Dark Hollow, Misty Bog, Alpine Ridge, Lofty Castle.
No worlds from Peace Keepers were shown it seems. Rather odd omission. Unless one of the levels I'm thinking is Alpine Ridge is actually Dry Canyon.
Actually it probably is looking at the geometry.
I'm such a dork XD
@YummyHappyPills I just hope they can replicate the feel of controlling Spyro. He was always a little.... drifty? And I think that was what made playing it special.
@hi_drnick In an interview with IGN, they talk about recapturing Spyro's movement, and describe the original game's movement as fluid. They're going to try and get the gameplay as close as possible to the original games
@YummyHappyPills SpongeBob is voicing Spryo??? I would have preferred the original voice actor but at least we are getting Spyro instead of a mutated gremlin
I was honestly expecting the game to become accidentally available for sale on the Italian PS store or something before it was even announced.
Glad they've finally announced it, that was really starting to DRAGON. Sorry if somebody's already made that joke. In fact, I'm just sorry full stop.
@Tasuki His OG voice, Carlos Alazraqui, was only for Spyro 1. Tom Kenny was 2 and 3.
Tom Kenny is the voice people associate the most.
@hi_drnick He had a little momentum to him. His movements flowed.
@Gremio108 throws 10 ice cold Water Balloons at you
@get2sammyb
Honestly, I'd have talked about it on NintendoLife to tell purists how good it is as I've done with the N. Sane Trilogy (trust me on this one). But given the lack of a Switch port, well... actually, I'm just here to tell how, actually, I'm glad the game even exists at this point! I just got carried away with the Switch part, that's all. Besides, I also hope the PS5 will be hybrid much like the Switch itself. That would get me back in the PlayStation home console family in seconds.
As of now, however, I'll just calm my portable Insomniac-made-Spyro thirst with my PSP, because - guess what! - I have the trilogy itself on the little thing. Same goes for Crash, of course.
@PS_Nation
Same as my earlier comment.
And the only port-begging I've done in the past is about the KH HD Remixes. I mean, the PS Vita is literally a portable PS3, why didn't they just slap a port on the machine? That would be a killer app for me.
If the lack of a job didn't contribute to an economical situation that was already going downhill at the time, I'd have bought a Vita too, and that would be the perfect companion to the 3DS in my portable bag. As of now, however, I have settled with my magnificent PSP Go.
I'll be getting it
@YummyHappyPills I thought Carlos did the first three then Kenny did the ones after that with Matthew Mercer doing Spyro in Skylanders.
@YummyHappyPills It's all good, Bayonetta's overrated.
@Tasuki Nope, Kenny was 2 and 3. Carlos only did the original.
@get2sammyb You take that back and Ill buy Bloodborne!
Shame it isn't a time exclusive but we know most will buy on PS4 anyway. Looks great though.
Same month as Spider-Man though. Gotta save up fast.
@YummyHappyPills @get2sammyb I just listened to IGN's Spyro Reignited Trilogy developer interview. One of the guys mentioned 'next generation' consoles. Do you guys think this could be reference to these games possibly being cross-generation, or just a reference to the current consoles, but how much more powerful they are than the consoles these games were originally on?
@Turismo4GT The latter, surely.
@Turismo4GT I'm sure he just means these consoles, yeah.
@adf86 Sigh, it’s really weird to see Crash and Spyro on another platform. Anyway, time to move on. 😑
Another one to go into my countdown timers...
@ShogunRok what’s port begging? And why is it bad?
Day 1 like crash
@IanDavid basically it’s annoying... plus Push Square is the Messenger not the main guys plus this is a PlayStation website NOT a THAT company website...
@PS_Nation There were Crash and Spyro games on the Cube and Xbox, so no it's not weird.
@PS_Nation
Like Crash, never understood the appeal of this series. The original Ratchet & Clank was what made me a fan of Insomniac (I had to look somewhere after Super Mario Sunshine disappointed me). Still, another game added to the crowded September release schedule. All of which will likely be kicked to the curb by gamers when Red Dead Redemption 2 drops.
@IanDavid It's basically just people whining about games not being on their console of choice. Doesn't promote any kind of constructive conversation about the game itself.
@Tasuki Dude. Tom Kenny (Spongebob) WAS the original voice actor for Spyro in the first game.
Edit: Sorry, apparently he voiced 2 and 3, and 1 was someone else.
@get2sammyb Not gonna lie, I agree with you. As a MASSIVE Nintendo fan, I think Bayonetta is a great series, but it's definitely praised much more than it should be. Sure the gameplay is quite fun, but it's not THE best action game of all time like most Nintendo fans will have you believe. I personally though Nier Automata did it better, even with it's wonky open world.
Good Lord this looks incredible. I just finished replaying the first game on my PSP. It's remarkable what they were able to accomplish with this remake.
It looks great. I loved the originals. I'm looking forward to the nostalgia playing these again.
@NinjaWaddleDee Yeah the guy who originally voiced Spyro was the same guy who voiced the Taco Bell dog among other things.
Yaaaaaaaaaaay.
6/10.
@ShogunRok
Aw, crud! I haven't seen your comment, that would have changed my comments immensely.
Not deleting them, though, because they flowed into what I was meaning all along.
@PS_Nation (#74)
No need to worry - if I wasn't so young and naive back in the day, seeing the Universal logo before the developer's one in either trilogy would have made me put two and two together.
If anything, the GBA Crash games were the first sign of Vicarious Visions' sheer competence, which is why the announcement trailer of the N. Sane Trilogy had me nodding - so there's always a silver lining.
A bit worried about Toys For Bob managing the remake, although the trailer does an amazing job at keeping said worries at bay.
I'm excited, will get it eventually. Never really played them before, but they do seem like the kind of games that I'd love. Still got the 2nd and 3rd Crash games to play first.
Won't pick this up at launch, but will eventually. Never really took to Spyro when I was younger.
Wow, three games I actually want all coming out in the same month...
My bank balance is going to take a beating.
Not a series I ever played to any great degree back then due to mainly playing the N64 3D platformers at the time. I never really rated Crash back then either but did have fun with the remaster, I quite liked Croc for some reason though.
Having said all that I'll pick this up as I love my 3D platformers and the excitement I see on here suggests there is something about these games
Dragon dragon, rock the dragon!
@JoeBlogs Trouble with the trolley eh?
@JoeBlogs You'll find out in Spyro 2
I hope Spyro 3 controls better. I've always hated the Skateboard sections and the Animal companions. Buying this and Crash Nsane Trilogy later this year on Xbox,
I am really looking forward to the 21st of September to relive my childhood.
Another fantastic remaster! Much prefer these to playing old skool. Love the tweaks, love more responsive controls and love the passion on making these games up-to-date! On me wishlist.
This makes me want to go back and play Spyro 2 again.
I remember playing the demo of spyro on PS1 quite alot, but never did get around to picking up any of them games back then. So I can't wait to actually get to play theses game on the PS4.
@Gamer83 Everyone is running away of Red Dead Redemption 2. Talking about Insomniac, I’m a huge fan of their games, it’s no secret that I love Ratchet and Clank, but also a huge fan of Resistance and Spyro. I really liked Sunset Overdrive too. Insomniac is on my top 5 gaming studios ever, now can’t wait for Spider-Man.
Seriously, though, PS5 absolutely needs to be backwards compatible! It created a whole new lot of future classics, and it brought back old time classics. I don't wanna lose these games for years again...
@PS_Nation
It seems to be the case anyway. Speaking for myself I'm probably going to hold off on RDR 2 for a bit now. Yakuza Kiwami 2 tops my list for August and I want to get both Spider-Man and Shadow of the Tomb Raider in September, that should be enough to get me through until Black Friday when there's a chance RDR 2 gets a sale.
@Gamer83 I'm not the best source, but isn't it kinda difficult for Rockstar games to be on sale so soon? I mean, it's completely normal to hold for some games, especially on this case with so many coming, but Rockstar games sell a lot. I remember that GTA V was still on full price after months. Anyway, like I said, I'm not sure, your country probably have better sales and Black Friday looks crazy enough.
Spyro the Dragon was the first PS1 game I bought as a child, so definitely looking forward to playing <3.
@PS_Nation
I'm from the U.S., Black Friday gets insane over here. If a game comes out early enough, which I believe RDR 2 is on schedule to do so, it can get a good Black Friday sale. Then it'll be back up to $60. Rockstar games are like Nintendo games, they'll stay at full price but retailers do run special promotions from time to time, especially during the Holiday season.
Can't wait for this, and running out to preorder it this weekend! These, Crash and You Don't Know Jack was the only reason I ever owned a Playstation 1...didn't really care for the system (loved PS2, Ps3 and the current PS4...PS3 bringing me to fall completely in love with Sony and their consoles). Can't wait though, and my wife loves them, as she still plays them on the PS3. It's going to be fun to reach for the trophies!!!
Please tell me they will be using Stewart Copeland's soundtrack for the first game. That's a great soundtrack--one of my all time favorites from this era.
Uh oh... I read this, "...reimagined version of composer Stewart Copeland’s soundtrack."
But we shall see and I will hope for the best!
@adf86 “Games play better on Xbox One X” this applies to both this and Crash, both running at 4K 60fps as opposed to the Pro’s 1440p 30fps. Yeah the majority may buy and play this on the PS4 but they won’t be experiencing it at it’s very best.
@RenanKJ 10,000% percent its going to be
@MaccaMUFC Who cares? Jeez
@bbtothe I hope Sony hears you! =)
VECTREX PORT WHEN!??
OT: I will be all over this trilogy, with apologies to the originals on my Vita. It was always a great comfort game for me and it's just so well made. Technologically advanced for its day as well
@adf86 When the differences are that much? Quite a few would care I’d imagine, especially Pro owners who have paid extra for a console to play games at their best. You say you don’t care but you took the time to reply just to say you don’t care? 🤔
I've never actually played any of the Spyro games, but this looks super-fun, will definitely be picking this one up.
@MaccaMUFC I hardly think many will be wanting to play Spyro on Xbox just it's "4K 60FPS". And I commented on it because it has nothing to do with the actual article, so I called you out on it like I would on anybody else if they said the same thing.
@adf86 Okay let’s just be happy then that we’re going to get to enjoy this great trilogy regardless which system it’s on but it must of been surprising that Sony didn’t make a deal to have it exclusive for a year like they did with Crash N. Sane trilogy?
I wished Activison had the rights to the Gex IP I’d of loved to have seen those remade, I say remade because these recent Crash and Spyro trilogies are more remade than remastered to me.
