If you've been keeping up with Red Dead Redemption 2 since its reveal, then you'll likely already know that main playable character Arthur Morgan is a part of Dutch's notorious outlaw gang. However, according to an exclusive IGN preview, it sounds like said gang will actually play a significant role in how the game will play.
"As we saw in our demo, Rockstar is focusing heavily on how we as players can interact with the world, and this includes spending time living and working with the other members of the gang, along with the relationships we forge therin," the preview reads. It then goes into some detail about how Arthur can tackle missions in various ways with the gang at his side. To be clear, it seems as though Arthur is the only member of the gang who's actually playable -- this doesn't appear to be a Grand Theft Auto V scenario.
"Arthur doesn’t have to put the team first, or keep the camp fed and supplied - though he may earn an invite to a job or mission if he does. If he just wants to fend for himself and spend time hunting and exploring the wilderness alone, those choices will be recognized by the other gang members," IGN continues.
So, it sounds as though Arthur's interactions with the gang run quite deep, but will this stuff impact the story at all? Unfortunately, IGN doesn't seem too sure on that front, stating that it's currently unknown whether these player choices can change the course of the narrative. We suppose that we'll find out in time.
What do you make of this? Think you'll end up hanging out with Dutch and the boys? Keep your revolver holstered in the comments section below.

Have I time travelled or something? 😱😱
Good. I thought the split campaign of gta 5 resulted in the story and characters lacking focus, so this will allow us to dig a little deeper into Arthurs character and be a much more rewarding story
If you can't play as Marston then this game is a 0/10 😡
hmm I really hope there isn't too much busy work for your gang. I doubt it but there is always a chance.
@AFCC There are gonna be parts where Arthur calls John over and he's gonna be like "boy, read this for me."
@RogerRoger yeah exactly man. I trust rockstar and I lean more towards the positive side of things but at the end of the day this is an open world game and I really hope it doesn't become a slog in between story missions
@ShogunRok ooooh! Ok that would make it a 11/10...it's a thin line we're walking along here!
Looks interesting, actual innovation in open world games, also playing as one person is great, I don't like 3 person protagonist in gta v.
Can I name my horse? And can I name it Roach?
REGULATORS!
Mount up!
It might be like a refined version of the heists from GTA. So say you're robbing a train, you pick your gunman, your stagecoach driver etc. Could be fun.
"Hey, Arthur. You want to go bowling?"
@RogerRoger well said man. I think that's why I enjoyed the Witcher 3 so much. Yes it had fetch quests and those mundane missions but it also had some side missions that were better than the main storyline. I feel like assassin's Creed did this well too, I just wished it had a better main story ploy thread. Rockstar has earned my trust so they get the benefit of the doubt but a part of me still remains cautious. Even Titans can fall. Luckily the wild West is a setting I enjoy so as long as the world is great I could look past some flaws
If gameplay and quest and story progression are as finely integrated as this IGN piece is hinting, RDR2 will be an utterly fantastic game. Also love the details they give about horses.
This might be the first AAA Western game I buy at launch since Arkham Knight.
rolling, rolling,rolling.......RAWHIDEEEEEEEEEE!...looking good.
"spending time living and working with the other members of the gang, along with the relationships we forge therin"
Is this going to go all Brokeback Mountain?
I hope its better then the first because i found it nothing special but we will see.
@Rob_230 nothing was wrong with the story in gta5
@AFCC his handsome self isn't the main character but maybe he might when the game is beating or he's playable in multiplayer mode
@wiiware no one complained about it including critics
@munkondi you need glasses or eye contacts
@ApostateMage Lord have mercy hush sweetie
@Undead21 The biggest surprise would be marketing a new playable character but then when you play...you play as Marston ;D
@Undead21 Opinions though right? Personally i didn't enjoy the story in gta 5 nearly as much as i did in GTA 3, Vice, San Andreas or 4. Doesnt change the fact GTA 5 is brilliant and a massive achievement.
@AFCC ahh or also he will be playable for a little bit in the story mode
@Rob_230 ahh I see now ok
@Undead21 that would be cool! But just imagine the surprise...it's like a reverse Raiden in mgs2
@Splat well since we call all our horses Roach...
@AFCC oh yes definitely cool
