April was a pretty darn good month for PlayStation gaming, and that was thanks to just a handful of top quality titles. But as always, only one release can be crowned Game of the Month -- and no, you don't win any prizes for guessing which title came out on top time this around.
Bronze Trophy: The Swords of Ditto
Another cracking smaller release from publisher Devolver Digital, The Swords of Ditto is a colourful little action RPG with a cool premise. You've got just a few in-game days to prepare for a fateful encounter with an evil witch: win and peace is restored to the world -- lose and the next chosen one will have to pick up the slack 100 years down the line. "Tight and tidy, this is an addictive time sink that's well worth a look -- especially if you bring someone along for the ride," our 8/10 review concludes.

Silver Trophy: Owlboy
A top notch pixelated adventure with an intriguing story and bagfuls of charm, Owlboy left senior staff writer Stephen Tailby thoroughly impressed. "All told, Owlboy is a delightful game full to bursting with character. Otus’ bittersweet tale is engrossing, the supporting cast is consistently charming, and there’s an admirable level of polish across the board," he gushed in our 9/10 review. "It took them 10 years, but D-Pad Studio has created one of the best 2D adventure titles in recent memory."

Gold Trophy: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
It may have been swept aside by God of War's launch three days later (good job, SEGA), but we implore you to check out Yakuza 6 when you get the chance. The final chapter in series' protagonist Kazuma Kiryu's story, this is what next-gen Yakuza looks like. The all-new Dragon Engine adds a layer of lushness that the franchise has needed for years, and the plot takes no prisoners. Gripping, spectacular, and downright dumb at times, Yakuza 6 should not be missed, according to our 9/10 review.

Platinum Trophy: God of War
God of War is our Game of the Month for April 2018. You never saw this one coming, did you? Of course not! A superb game from start to finish, editor Sammy Barker slapped a 10/10 on Sony's latest exclusive and never looked back.
"God of War is a special game," Sammy concluded. "This reimagining of the famous PlayStation franchise elevates the series in unexpected ways, without forgetting the core tenets that made Kratos a fan-favourite to begin with." Kratos is back, baby, and we'd happily take a sequel right now. Like, right now. Today. Game of the Month!

How we decide our Game of the Month: At the end of each month, the editorial team put together a list of nominees. Nominees must have been released within the month, and they must have been reviewed by Push Square. We select nominees based on our own review scores.
The editorial team then presents this list of nominees to the rest of the Push Square staff. Staff are asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to be crowned Game of the Month. First choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. When voting closes, we tally the results to determine the order of this article. The game with the most points is our Game of the Month.

Great month for ps4
PHWOAR! GOD OF WAR
Boy!
Silly question really - of course GoW is the game of the month - not only the best GoW game ever, its also got to be a contender for Game of the Year - although I do think RDR2 will take that...
Both Yakuza 6 and God of War are tremendous games that has been an absolute delight to play them.
Is this a april fools joke.of course its god of war.game of april.game of the year.game of the decade.worddddddd uppppppp sonnnnnnn
@BAMozzy nope red dead is great.but god of war will win this year game of the year easily.word up son
GoW is the only one I got cause it is the only one I need. Truly amazing game.
@playstation1995 Maybe for you or some 'bias' playstation/sony-centric sites/fanboys but not when it comes to the 'official' awards that matter...
@Neolit Yeah, even with all the changes at its core it still very much feels like a GOW game. That is pretty impressive.
Yakuza 6 for me, GoW is awesome but I still enjoy a Yakuza game a bit more.
@BAMozzy If this was a GTA game I'd agree, but I don't think Red Dead has the same mainstream appeal as a GTA game.
god of war is one of the three best games of this generation so... and i'm 99% certain there'll be nothing better this year for me, certainly not RDR2. i appreciate that rockstar does brilliantly made games, but i just don't find any of the ones i've tried to be that good to actually play..
@Bonbonetti Whether it has the mainstream appeal of GTA or not is irrelevant. GoW wasn't 'mainstream' either and as far as the first game is concerned, it is regarded as one of the best games of last generation and was a winner of multiple game of the year awards.
The game of the year awards are not based on which game sells the most (otherwise Fifa and CoD would win it every year but the game that has the most critics rate as the Game of the Year.
RDR had a Metacritic score of 95 too and even EDGE gave it 10/10
Who could've seen that coming?
@BAMozzy Fun fact both "prequels" GoW3 and RDR1 came out in the same year as well 2010. The year of Mass Effect 2.
cool to see some indie love!
God of War. Although Yakuza 6 is a blast also.
Both Yakuza 6 and GOW are Games of the Month for me, April 2018 is one to remember.
@JoeBlogs I can see Spider-Man selling well, being a fun game etc but I don't think it will be 'Game of the Year'. At most, it may get nominated in a few categories but I don't think it will be as critically acclaimed.
As we know, the most popular games are not necessarily Game of the Year too - its the games that 'critics' pick. I do think RDR2 will be critically successful. I also think it will be quite innovative too - something else that will give it an edge over GoW which is quite 'old school' in design - even if visually stunning. Even with this, Spider-Man etc, the general feeling is that RDR2 is the biggest release of the year - so much so that others are looking to avoid releasing on or even after it.
I know it seems a number here were not keen, didn't play and not even aware of the previous games 'critical' success. Maybe 'cowboys' doesn't appeal in the UK so much either but when RDR came to BC, that was as big as a 'new' game releasing - again not so much here on a Playstation site.
Time will tell as they say but I do think RDR2 will be Game of the Year. GoW may well scoop some awards and I think more awards than Spider-Man will.
