SNK announced recently that it would be producing a NeoGeo Classic Edition to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and rumours are rife regarding a potential Nintendo 64 Classic Mini. These micro-consoles have proven to be vastly popular, and naturally, we've pondered whether Sony would ever produce an equivalent for the PSone. According to John Kodera, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, it's not entirely out of the question.
Speaking with Mantan Web, Kodera stated that such a console has been considered before. "Our company is always digging up past assets. I think there are various ways to do (a classic console). There have been discussions happening (within the company) on what kind of ways are there."
This isn't confirmation by any means, but it's interesting to note that the platform holder has at least been thinking about producing a PSone Classic. It sounds like it's not outside the realm of possibility, and though we're not holding our breath, it would make for a fantastic announcement at PSX.
On a related note, we compiled a list of 20 games we'd like to see on a PSone re-issue. Do you agree with our list? Would you buy a PSone Classic? Reminisce in the comments below.

I'd pre-order as soon as possible if this happened. Sony's been around in the industry long enough that it can play off nostalgia as well as Nintendo and a PSone 'classic' re-release seems like a no-brainer to make some easy cash.
It's going to run into the same issues that the N64 classic has. A lot of the best games are third party or in licensing limbo.
Just a symptom of the time I suppose. Still it would be nice to see.
Anyway Mr Kodera, as for always "Digging up past assets" you sure didn't do a good job of releasing PSOne Classics on PS3 in the EU And those past assets sure as hell aint showing up on PS4 either.
How far down did ya bury em buddy, coz you've been digging for a while?
I still have a fully working PSOne, but if they make one I’ll buy it.
If they have been thinking about this, it might be why we've not seen PS1 support on PS4 yet.
As for the licensing issues people said the same about Shenmue 1 and 2 didn't they? You never know anyway.
@kyleforrester87 I highly doubt you will either, not this late in the game. Perhaps they're holding out that functionality fo the next console.
Wouldn't buy, but sure others may be interested. Just place them in a PS1 Classics folder in the PS store and I will pick my favourites.
I wouldn't be against it. I'd personally rather collect the games themselves, but this can be a good easy way to experience essential PS1 titles, and maybe even a good entry level system if priced right.
It would also be great if they were made in plentiful quantity, instead of dealing with stock shortages like the Nintendo minis have.
I’d buy two of them if they do, lol.
don't need Crash... have remaster
don't need Spyro... will have remaster
don't need FF7... will have remaster if released
want Final Fantasy IX
want Einhander
want Gran Turismo 2
want R4 Ridge Racer Type 4
want NFS3 Hot Pursuit
They should do a combined PS1/PS2 Classic console so...
Gran Turismo 4
Burnout 3 Takedown
Tom Clancy Splinter Cell
Ace Combat 4 Shattered Skies
ICO / Shadow of the Colossus
Midnight Club 3
NFS Most Wanted
Downhill Domination
Primal
Silent Hill 2
SOCOM US Navy SEALs
Soulcalibur 2
racing games always seem to be under represented on these things
@RogerRoger I like him too. He’s already mentioned the Vita more than Andrew House has .
Vita 2 is coming. Believe it!
@Fight_Teza_Fight Oo has he said positive things? The disdain some execs have had for vita has been baffling.
Re psone mini, i would probably be there on day 1, particularly if it included tony hawks 2.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Here already. Called the Switch
Hmm I’d prob get it if priced fairly
@LaNooch1978

?
Don't be that guy.
@Rob_230 Supposedly he’s a fan of handhelds. He mentioned it (the vita) at the Investor Relations Day a few times.
@Cycologist I own a Switch, but it’s too big to take to work with me (+no trophies).
PSOne Classic...😅
@LaNooch1978 Ah - That would be a long old gap between generations, and something could be lost in translation there. I'd be surprised though, but I suppose it's possible given the half-cycle iterations we've had.
@Neolit Yeah! I'd rather Sony update the PS4 to let me play the PSOne Classics I already bought on PSN (since I literally have all the games I want), lol.
I'd probably pass on this personally. Most of the really good PS1 games have been on PSN, and can be played on PS3 or vita. Plus, PS1 games can still be purchased on eBay or Amazon used in decent condition at reasonable prices.
Kill this stone dead with little fuss... Make the PS4 fully backward compatible with ps1 games. I bought a tonne of "ps one classics" Allow us to play what we bought on earlier systems.
To hell with the trophies.. just give us one system to play the PS history.
I would rather Sony focus on making PS5 be THE PlayStation console where so much of it's back catalogue is available. In this day and age we should be able to play most of the best PS1 and PS2 games on PS4 etc but both Sony and Nintendo have lagged badly on this issue with putting so many retro games on their digital stores. Maybe licencing is such a problem that it stops most of these, so possibly the only option is to brute force b/c via the bluray drive so that it recognizes PS1, PS2 games but god knows if that's even possible.
Heck yes I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I think I'd rather have a Squaresoft box filled with PS1 games than a PS1 classic. Not to say there aren't enough good PS1 games to fill a 20 game box, I'd just rather have 20 Squaresoft PS1 games. Though I'd rather have a disc like Rare Replay on PS4 than another box.
I actually still have almost all of my PS1 games on disc, just regret trading in Xenogears.
They should make one though, price it right and it's sold out at Christmas as gifts even if not a single person bought it for themselves. The PS1 Slim was so small they could probably just replicate that exact size.
I hope sony also make the digital version, so I can play the classic on my ps4 pro with good resolutions. I definitely want to play castlevania sotn on my ps4 although I already have it on vita
Largest library of quality games to choose from for a legacy console. Sure to please and upset a lot pf people with whatever short list makes the cut. Id buy day one.
@LaNooch1978 I meant it in an endearing way. Like "aw, dat guy!"
I'd love one personally, still have my PS1 but a mini would be great
Its a great idea but all of the companies doing these mini versions need to do rpg minis as well. 25 best rpgs on one console (one of the best ever in this case)...It would sell like hotcakes. I know there are smartphone emulators but you need a controller to get the best experience qs a flat touchscreen sucks
Neo geos 40th anniversary? It was only released in 1990 which is only 28 years ago! Somebody needs to go back to school.
I normally ignore Nintendo's Classic lineup despite cheering for the trend because they're obviously not playable on the go without a screen to wire them to, but with PS1's form factor and the likely absence of physical media akin to NES and SNES Mini... just imagine Sony doing something like this: https://youtu.be/ah4R9oWkxXU #wishfulthinking
Hello people.
I DO NOT want to start anything, but I don't think they should do it.
PS1 for me was, is a pioneer, a foundation, don't mess with that....
☮️!
I'd much rather just have the PS1 games on the PS4 thanks.
Seriously I despise these classic consoles for removing the ability to play classic games on modern consoles.
I'd buy it.
I have a lot of nostalgia for my PSOne as it was my first console, so I'd be happy to see a PS1 classic in some form. Perhaps with Bluetooth controllers which are compatible with PS4 (hey, I can only hope!) and plenty of classic games to boot ^_^
Got most of PS1's best games downloaded to PS3.
Jackie Chan's stuntmaster is a personal fave.
Most of the best PS1 games were third-party. It didn’t have the core of first party games that the early Nintendo systems did.
I’d love a PSOne Mini that includes Final Fantasy Tactics and Street Fighter Alpha 3.
Hopefully it’d be every bit as hackable as Nintendo’s Minis.
to be honest, the only ps1 games i'd want to play these days are jrpgs. that would make my ideal ps1 classic a jrpg machine and i don't think that is going to happen since 10 games would be s-e games (chrono cross, parasite eve, xenogears, brave fencer musashi, ff 8-9, etc.). the truth is, most ps1 games other than jrpgs have not aged well and would be painful to play today. games which i loved 20 years ago such as syphon filter for example, might be better left alone than tainting my fond memories. still, i would buy a ps1 classic regardless out of sheer nostalgia and respect for sony, despite the fact i still have a working ps1 that i use on occasion.
@Wrench32 40th anniversary of SNK, not the Neo Geo.
Please, no. Don't be Nintendo.
Just put the damned ports on PS4. I don't want to have to buy another piece of hardware to play these games. Port, add trophies, winner.
Take my money
I pretty much use the Vita for my PS1 needs (and, of course, there is PSTV or PS3 if you wanted to play on the big screen). No need for this imo as those options seem far better than what will probably be an emulator with a fixed 50 games on it.
Not so fussed about a PS1 console but a PS2 would be worthy of consideration
I still got my PSOne
I'd buy a PSOne Classic console day one, depending on the price and game selection.
@Cycologist FF9 had a remaster to. 😁
