Long lived and well loved, Star Ocean is a series that's now a lot less relevant than it once was, but there's still demand from fans to keep the franchise ticking along. During a recent Japanese Star Ocean livestream, some fans were waiting on a potential Star Ocean 6 announcement, but it never happened.
Square Enix producer Shuichi Kobayashi says that the publisher is aware of the demand for a new entry, but apparently "it’s not that simple to make".
"If it could be made without tri-Ace, then surely it would possible. But that’s not the case, is it? I’m saying please wait a little longer. Won’t you please wait a little longer?” Kobayashi continues.
The last mainline title in the series, Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness, launched back in 2015, but it's safe to say that it didn't make much of a splash. As such, we reckon Square Enix must still be pondering over the future direction of the property.
Would you be up for a new Star Ocean? What would you like to see from the series moving forward? Keep up those crazy combos in the comments section below.

I love the SO series, but every game that isn't 2 has been flawed in some way. Personally, I've always been annoyed that it's clung to fantasy so much. Maybe taking a page from Xenosaga in its style will help?
Loved the fact that every character in your part fights in 5 though, would love to see that kept in.
Problem with integrity and faithfulness is they made it too easy. Too short. Changed the formulae too much . So not surprised it didn't do well
Star Ocean 5 was complete utter rubbish. Still I wouldn't want the franchise to die, I for one am willing to wait longer so they know which direction to take it.
plus Till the End of Time's story kind of bottle necked the series a bit
kind of hard to come up with new stories when you have to take the events of that game into account
The camera in 5 almost killed it for me. Liked the game and the world, but the jarring camera shaking was horrendous.
Would love another SO!
I still have most of the series to get through, so I can wait a few years. But I'd lie if I denied wanting as many entries as this grand technofantasy JRPG series with quality combat and plentiful mechanics can get.
Not easy to make like FF7 remake
Translation Square Wont give us a Decent Size Budget like the FF7 Team
After SO3, the series startes to lose its lustre, especially with 5. Had lot of potential but its glaring flaws like the camera issues, quests and such wounded it from being a success. Not only that but even after 2-3 years have passed, not one patch was made for the game. Same problem that Exist Archive had.
Also, remember when Square said that they would like to port the game to PC? Lol.
Still, I do want to see another SO game. However, I think it's time it goes back to its roots or maybe take a few notes from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or something down the lines.
With all the hubbub about VII remake and KHIII, it's easy to make a joke about how games are not simple for Square.
While I admire the loyalty to the original developer, I don't see why they couldn't make one without tri-Ace, unless they have partial ownership in which case, well alright.
The only good SO is the Second Story on PS1. All Other entries are mediocre to bad games. Go back to Second Story roots and make another Second Story and I shall buy your game.
I'd prefer some rereleases of the first two titles first. Make the series more Accessible
that's okay... we don't need another star ocean game. the majority of them are mediocre, particularly the last two entries.
I felt like this was a series with a huge amount of potential that hasn't been close to tap into.
I would love to see their not broken remasters in disc. Yeah Secret of Mana was a mess.... 😉
Star Ocean 5 just stank of shoestring budget, I think in terms of direction it was better compared to 4 at least but as it was it just felt so incomplete.
Star Ocean Second Story is still the only game in the series that I truly enjoyed though.
I personally prefer SO3, but I can see why alot of you lean towards SO2.
Maybe I'm just weird, but I adore every game in the series, save the last..... And even then, I didn't necessarily /hate/ SO: I&f, but I agree that it was a bit anticlimactic. I was expecting something amazing, and while (on my PS4) the attention to detail on all the different areas Fiddley and the crew visit (some are beautiful), I found the character design rather..... well, for lack of a better term, lazy. Even the previous entries looked better, and I miss the cutscenes. That was one of my favorite parts about this series! That, and none of the mouths matched what they were saying in the English version, which is rather annoying as well.
I dunno.... I would LOVE another installment in the series, but only if they stop changing all the things that made me love the series in the first place. 😞
My first Star Ocean was till the end of time. I've played it since 2004 on ps2 and again on ps4.
I loved this game so much when "The last hope" came out for xbox 360, I bought an Xbox 360 in 2009 just to play it. I also bought a psp to play first departure and second story. I own integrity and faithlessness which I had preordered before release and purchased a ps4 to play it. The reason I own consoles is simply because of star ocean. I did not find any game which came close in comparison to "Till the end of time".
"Till the end of time" was a master piece! It had puzzles and hidden dungeons. I still play this game currently after 16 years. There are many hidden items and I love the battle trophy system. There is also two player. This game is a true game and a reason to buy a console.
I just hoped the graphics will be improved. Imagine that? Exploring those wonderful planets and their lore through and through doing a puzzle at every turn. Getting stronger and making your weapons capable of defeating gods! Seriously best game. Would love to see more as extensive and so limitless. Just need better textures and till the end of time would easily be the best.
I decided to google if there was SO6 coming out and was surprised to find a lot of you are saying you didn't like 5. What exactly didn't people like? I'd agree the story was short and even chaos was pretty easy but what is this camera problem, I dont see any issue with the camera? The quest system was different but didn't seem bad either, I was actually able to do all the quests without needing a guide or anything. I do kind of wish that you learned new abilities by leveling up instead of through manuals but not a game killer for me. The rush reserve guage was nice for experience, fol or SP gains and bing able to load a profile without having to build from scratch ( like 3) was definitely a plus. Blindsides in 4 were cool for a while but quickly got annoying for me since it felt like that's all the game wanted you to do so personally I'm glad their gone. I was introduced to SO3 first and from there played 4, 5 and then 1 and all were great with their own pros and cons but I never ran into something so bad i couldn't play the game or thought any of them were garbage. I do have the second on my list to play but since its on the PSP I've been a bit unmotivated to get it. All in all, to me it sounds like people didn't like the game because it wasn't the same as whichever SO they grew up with or had the best memories playing but that doesn't make the game bad. Try to go into each new release as a new individual game without the biases of the previous incarnations and I think you'd be less likely to be disappointed if it's not like your favorite. Personally I'd love to see a SO6 and even if it was different than all of the SO games so far I think I'd still enjoy it.
