The BBC is killing it at the moment, with its PlayStation VR powered World Cup experience in particular dropping jaws. However, it’s not done kicking competitor ITV while it’s down just yet, as it’s just updated the PlayStation 4’s iPlayer app to support 4K streaming on the PlayStation 4 Pro ahead of England’s first match versus Tunisia.
There’s some chatter about this being a beta roll out, with only a lucky few getting to stream in Ultra High-Definition. Either way, we’re watching Belgium now with added clarity; hopefully Marouane Fellaini will come on for the second half so we can see his marvellous mane in crystal clear quality. It’s what 4K was made for, after all.

Nice. Can’t wait to see Tunisia beat England in 4K.
Hoping to see those 4K Tunisian goals roll in tonight. Wouldn't be surprising given the way the other big teams have been playing.
If every time you watched a game on the BBC it gave you the clap I'd still prefer it over ITV. The only good thing about watching football on ITV is waiting for the day that Roy Keane finally snaps and beats everyone half to death.
C'mon, lads! Surely we want England to make a little progress?
Will be watching in VR instead. I hope the BBC do similar events like Wimbledon, World Championship athletics and Glastonbury for VR as well.
Not sure there's any resolution that makes this Belgium team any good.
I was disappointed in the quality of the BBC 4K streams I tried the other day.
@get2sammyb Wish I could Sammy. I’m Irish. I don’t have it in me haha.
@roe Belgium's lineup is so strong on paper. I think all of the favourites apart from maybe Spain have disappointed so far, but it's still early.
Apparently Samsungs 2016 TV's won't support 4K HDR through iplayer.
Pretty annoying, as the owner of a KS7000, while not exactly top end this is not a particularly cheap TV either. I was looking forward to watching some 4K HDR world cup.
“All of Samsung’s 2016 HDR TVs support HLG Broadcast technology (firmware update required). The BBC UHD iPlayer, however, relies on a mixture of technologies, not just HLG, to enable its steaming of UHD content. Samsung have no plans to support BBC UHD iPlayer on its 2016 UHD TV Range.”
Ive found its absolute crap and I have good fibre, stops often and audio goes out of sync just as often. Made for comical outcome during a penalty 'thud' 'cheers' whilst player still standing and waiting to run up.
@stevie85 Ahh, okay. You're allowed to point and laugh, then.
I heard that BBC pundits are awful, especially Evra, is this correct?
@get2sammyb the favorite is Portugal
Guys get ready for another disappointment with England btw x)
@PS_Nation Paddy Evra is great. (But he's on ITV.)
@AFCC One can't be disappointed when one's expectations are so low.
@get2sammyb word up chief.England is about to play.im tmrooting for your squad.but my 💗 belongs to france.la victorie extradinare.vivre la france.word up son
@get2sammyb Barton should comment!
@AFCC The favorite is Mexico, word up son.
@AFCC vivre la france word up son
@PS_Nation whos your team playa.England is cool.but my team is france chief.sa ses magnifique .france for the win playa.word up son
@playstation1995 I agree with you, would be awesome if France wins.
Word up!
@get2sammyb Since, like the World Cup itself, we don't have BBC iPlayer in the US, perhaps you'd care to remind people it's the last day to sign up for the 2 month PS Vue discount in the US, it's $10 off Core. (Figured I'd remind you since you don't have Vue over there.) It's actual the last day of the overall Days of Play sale if you just want a general reminder article. ☺
Just a heads up. The I player app update isn't actually 4k. It's "just" 1080p as the I player app used to be 720p on ps4 and in fact.. Thats their HD content resolution.
You can check for yourself. Go to settings, help, help then system information in the Iplayer app.
You'll see with the update its now 1080 and not 2160.
Unless the menus etc have had a 1080 update also from their old resolution.
BT sport 4k looks sharper.. Could be Iplayer getting tanked.. It is a beta after all.
@playstation1995 France v Portugal in the final again?
@PS_Nation they were impressive yes! But I think Germany's team is dated now and much worse than 4 years ago.
@LaNooch1978 Remember that penalty vs Portugal? XD anyway I'm not being cocky since Portugal only won 1 Euro cup and nothing more!
@get2sammyb Fair enough 😂 but seriously now, England has been lacking for years now, and I think this year is one of the worst teams from the past 14 years (since I started to watch football seriously).
@AFCC I honestly think this is one of England's best teams in a long time.
It's not got the lampard, Rooney and Gerrards of the past but its a much, much more balanced team. I expect England to reach the semis tbh.
That pains me to say that tbh haha.
I have watched all the bbc games on iPlayer in 4k without issue at all using my new Oled LG tv i bought 3 months ago. Have had no problem with the stream what so ever. It doesn't work properly on my bedroom Samsung 4k tv from 2015 though that might be as on wifi. Haven't tried using the ps4 pro though. Doubt i will as it will more than likely be down sampled.
Lol, it's been in 4k for all of the BBC games so far. First come first served, 10,000 'seats' available. It looks really good too but you need a very good, stable connection. Mine is hard wired, wireless won't cut it and my connection is usually around 60 meg. I was three minutes behind live last night after a buffer and received a text, 'get in' from my son. I wondered what he was on about. I found out three minutes later!
It is stunning, far better than HD but occasionally the quality will drop down a bit when your connection falters.
So far I've been really impressed but with a bitrate of 36 mbps it should be good.
Works fantastic, looks fantastic, LG 65C8 here.
@kyleforrester87 This is the exact reason I got rid of my KS7000 and got a LG B7 OLED. Will never buy Samsung again after how they dropped support like that. I have been very impressed with my LG, and the World Cup on iPlayer actually plays in UHD and HLG. Looks amazing.
@LaNooch1978
Was anyone else using the Internet? It's very bandwidth heavy.
I was hoping we in the UK would get 4K normal FreeView TV before the World Cup this year :-/ But saying that i doubt we will ever get normal 4K FreeView TV It has taken them years to get a few channels in 1080p. Oh well.
So thought id check this out on my samsung ks7500 internet speed 76mb. It looks the part but it just doesnt run smoothly. Like a very low frame rate is how i would explain it. Why is this?
@solocapers Hmm...they only have Kane as a reference! Lingard is simply bad imo and Sterling misses so much that you can't rely on him! Besides that is England ever going to get a proper GK sometime? LOL
@LaNooch1978 I have done recently actually. But first few games I didn't.
