In potentially controversial news, Red Dead Redemption 2 will include timed exclusive content on the PlayStation 4. We’ve known for some time that Sony is the lead marketing partner on the Rockstar release, but a PlayStation Store pre-order page has shed a little more light on the relationship, revealing that “select content” will be playable “first” on the PS4.
It’s not massively surprising news, given that the console already receives Call of Duty content earlier than the competition, and has had various Destiny missions on lockdown since the start of the generation. Nevertheless, it’s sure to cause ructions if the content turns out to be substantial – which, if we're all honest with ourselves, is unlikely to be the case, eh?
Personally, we can't wait to model our PlayStation exclusive in-game hat. Take that, Microsoft.
Update (20:15 BST): Unless the terms of the relationship have changed, sounds like the timed exclusive content will be limited to multiplayer. Here's what PlayStation brand marketing boss John Koller said all the way back in 2016: "We are pleased to announce that PS4 players get first access to earn select online content in the vast open world of Red Dead Redemption 2."
Old news, then.

Why is this news now? We learned about this when the game was announced in 2016.
@Amppari Yeah, added an update to the article. Still, some people may not be aware of this so worth re-reporting I think.
That's fine by me - will still buy it for Xbox One as I am not bothered or interested in Multi-player for this game...
I'm a little more concerned that there seems to be a "mission" that's only available if you get the special edition of the game. Not really a fan of locking out content (particularly in a game like this) but I guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.
I'm not really fussed about multiplayer so hopefully any exclusive stuff does get limited to that.
Timed exclusivity is still a mystery to me.
Anyone else not really feeling the hype for this?
Take that MS, lol.
@daveofduncan I'm really looking forward to it myself. I'm intrigued in what they do with the online portion of the game, too.
Won't play the multiplayer anyway so doesn't matter to me either way
I’m buying on Xbox One and I’m not bothered at all if it’s just something cosmetic like clothing, a certain breed of horse or some online missions being exclusive. It’s the single player where this game is going to shine but no doubt Rockstar are going to invest heavily to the online part of the game as that’s where they’ll be raking it in long after the game has been bought.
Seems like overkill at this point. MS is down for the count this gen, it's not even close.

@daveofduncan Never liked RDR to begin with and not a big fan GTA. The last game i bought was Vice City and that was more then enough. 😁 😋
@daveofduncan Yeah, the hype has been a little suppressed over time I think. Maybe because of the wealth of competition that is coming out this year and next. I was really super excited for RDR2 a year ago, but now I have to admit with what’s been released and what’s coming up this year, there are plenty of other games to divide the hype. Although I’ve yet to play it, maybe God of War stole the thunder of all other games this year.
