Ghost of Tsushima is essentially a love letter to old Japanese samurai movies, and while its recent gameplay reveal trailer demonstrated some stunning use of colour, there are a growing number of fans calling for the game to have a black-and-white filter to add to its authenticity. One fan even re-coloured the E3 2018 trailer to demonstrate how the title would look:
Assuming that Sucker Punch does include a feature like this, it’d probably need to re-light the game to compensate for the lack of colours. The effort would almost certainly be worth it, though – heck, throw in the already confirmed Japanese dub and add a little film grain and you’ve essentially got an Akira Kurosawa movie. Make it happen!

not for me.
1 of the things that blew me away was the collor pallet the game had in it's demo and i'm not going to ruin that by playing in black and white. others can do what they want though.
I think for it to be done properly and have it really work they'd need to change the lighting a bit rather than just de-saturate the image. It'd be cool if they went to that level of effort with it.
But yeah, the use of colour was probably one of the best things about the demo. Cool idea for multiple playthroughs, etc though.
Okay this is cool, I hope sucker punch add this feature
wow, like who wouldn't want that?
I'm all for giving people people options, I just don't understand why anyone would want to play with all the colours removed, especially the beautiful duel at the the end.
I'm colour blind and even i don't want this lol
Personally I can't wait to play it with the full colour palette and contrast that HDR offers and have absolutely NO desire to play it in B&W. I guess they could borrow the different filters from games like Uncharted but the game's use of colour - especially with the beautiful scenery that Tsushima provides, the colour of the leaves and blossom on the trees, the beautiful sunsets etc, is far more appealing than a B&W option.
What next? Standard definition and a LOT of film grain too? B&W wasn't a 'stylistic' choice for many of those films, it was financial and/or technological constraints that led these to be made in B&W...
Well it could be argued that unless you have an oled TV you'll not be playing in proper black and white even if it's implemented.
This is a waste of dev time imo. Just turn your colour right down if you're that bothered.
@Neolit yeah I was thinking same thing, just adjust TV settings. Or go buy you a brand new black and white TV!
Meh, not for me actually
Too much work for too little payoff unless it's a simple filter like the ones in Uncharted 4.
Besides, the use of color in the game is stunning.
I'm not familiar with black and white samurai movies, so I will play the game in full glorious colours.
Def B+W in a few playthroughs. Just like Akira Kurosawa movies...

That would actually be pretty awesome. It'd be cool if there was a black and white option, but only have blood in color.
A filter is all they should do, it’s not nearly as good looking without color. It’s not meant for B&W more than most games aren’t. It lives on color. As many have said, a lot of effort for little payoff to do anything more.
But cherry blossom trees....
I was really impressed with the green fields and cherry blossom trees, can’t forget about the blood, lol.
Then that would be Shadow of Tsushima
I remember LA Noire having a pretty cool feature like this.
Well obviously the game is inspired by the classic samurai movies so it makes sense that some would want to play in b&w to give it more of an air of authenticity about it. Personally I don't know why so many would be against it. It is giving people more choice after all.
Well maybe for the second playthrough, because it would be a shame not to enjoy these stunning visuals for the first time.
@adf86 i'm not against it,but it's just going a bit too far for the sake of "authenticity". japanse dub i understand but this B&W mode would just be a novility that they would waste their time on.
let them focus on completing the game that they have in mind before requesting rather unnecessary options.
watch the people asking for a more "authentic" soundtrack the moment the soundtrack gets released.
sure the game has been inspired by old samurai movies but that doesn't mean that it should become one aswell.
The game even looks fantastic in Black and white. 😁
@adf86 I rather have them put time in other things. But if its easy to so why not but let them release the game first. They can always patch in a filter in if its not to costly. 😁
@jdv95 But we don't know if it's going to take up a lot of resources though. At the end of the day people are asking for a feature that would be cool. Shadow of the Colossus had a b&w mode that arguably looked better then the colour version so it's not as if it can't be done.
I would play it if it was black, white, and red.
That would be frickin' bad***!
No 👎.i want my color ghost of tshushima.they had samurai.buddah monks.kung fu .and ninja movies in color. In the 70s and 80s and 90s.so no chief.word up son
Just make your TV greyscale then, lol.
This would be an awesome feature! Come on, as if anyone wants to adjust their TV. Plus add film grain, yes!!
Well it seems fans don't know what to ask for anymore.....black and white come on give me a break. Change your tv colour settings then and play with no colours!
First thing to do is show some better gameplay footage. As I've said before, from what they showed at E3, at the moment it looks like pretty much a simple hack-n-slash. Beautiful yes, absolutely stunning... but very basic.
@Retro88 ME, why would i not want to take advantage of all the work the designers put into making a world
colour can add a lot to the mood of a scene
I'd love it to have a celshaded overlay like Uncharted 4
Definitely will do that on my second play through. Kurosawa is the master. This game makes me consider a 4k HDR TV though for the colour palette.
@Paranoimia I always hate when people say that because you can’t truly tell if a combat system is simple without hands on time. There looked to be precision one hit kills to perform,it looked like he switched from high to low stance and of course timing counters.
@dark_knightmare2 I agree that you can't really tell, which is exactly why I want more info about it.
After the original reveal last year, I was expecting something... deeper. From what they showed at E3, it appears (to me at least) to be pretty basic combat. Even what you describe isn't particularly complicated. I was expecting an epic adventure, but if it turns out to essentially be button-mashing, I won't bother... no matter how pretty it is.
hmm yeah i guess giving people the option would be neat but I cannot see them delivering this at launch, could be fantastic to release a month or 2 later to entice replays
@FullbringIchigo its not like i plan on playing B&W from the start. First time's full color for sure...
