Dreams never ceases to amaze, it really doesn’t. Media Molecule’s been promoting a ‘Gothic Novel Game Jam’ for a few days now, and it went live on Twitch earlier today to essentially construct a Demon’s Souls-inspired game stage in around about an hour. It created a lot of the assets prior to going live in the interest of saving time, but this allowed it to show off the PlayStation 4 exclusive’s “Dream surfing” functionality, which is just beautifully designed.
So the game jam starts out with a corridor that the developer decorates with windows, skulls, and cathedral-esque pillars. Then it pulls in its character, which can wield both a torch and a sword, and has a variety of attacks. From there, the Guildford-based team just gets crazy, adding moody lighting, rain storms, and sound effects. There’s not enough time during the stream for it to build any real “gameplay”, but it’s just incredible watching this come together.
There really aren’t enough superlatives left to describe Dreams anymore. It’s mind-boggling how powerful this tool is, but what’s most impressive is that even during creation, the release retains an element of playfulness. Like, it just looks fun to use – it’s not a black monitor with lines of code. You play with it and fiddle around until you stumble upon something you like, which is a chaotic way of creating, yes – but it’s also a very fun way.

This is insane.
Hopefully the beta isn't too far away now but I don't expect this to come out this year. In fact I don't want it too given the way the calendar is going to be packed from late August on. One concern I do have is realistically how big of an environment can you make cos a lot of the things they've shown have been pretty small. So I'm not expecting Skyrim like maps to be made, just curious.
I just want to see someone remake the entire P.T. Demo in Dreams.
I'll get this game after a sale or two because I suck at creating but by than, people would already create so many cool things. I do hope Sony keeps letting developers make unique games.
So, it's like UE4/Unity where you make assets and use the "Game" view to move, place, add effects etc.?
Neat.
But what exactly is wrong with a "Black monitor with lines of code?" (For reference, mine is white!) That's how all the games you love were made. Even this website.
Though you wouldn't know it. My game design course at uni just treated programming as some whimsical thing and your game just magically had mechanics and code to use because they sure didn't teach any, but did like telling us how important Half Life was.
If they can create Dark Souls in an hour, I can give up on Dark Souls in an hour!
We could create Demon’s Souls 2 or Bloodborne 2, lol. That’s really awesome, we should definitely create a game here.
Crazy.
Media Molecule comes up with such crazy ideas for games and I love them for it.
@alphadrago5 it’s absolutely going to happen.
@Knuckles-Fajita Nothing wrong with lines of code, was just pointing out that creativity in this game seems to be “playful”. It looks fun to use, which is a good thing.
Can't wait. Well I can. Too many to finish first.
@get2sammyb So is Photoshop, if you are artistically inclined, or Visual Studio if engineering inclined.
There is a requirement for this to be fun.
@adf86 True, but you can certainly create a warp system to transition to different maps like PS1 and PS2 games did. Master that and you'll be able to make a massive game.
Since blizzard haven't yet... I'm making a diablo 4 game lol
It’s make-or-break time for Media Molecule. This game has been in development for ages — nearly the entire console generation, if not longer. Tearaway was a long time ago, and it sold poorly. If this bombs then I smell disaster for the developer. It would appear there is no way it should bomb, it looks brilliant. But good games that are handled poorly from the release and promotion stand point fail all the time. Pick a good release window, get the marketing right, Sony. Don’t let the Dream die.
@Th3solution if they don't market this exactly right and release it at exactly the right time, mark my words: this will bomb. I don't want it to, and it's a tremendous idea, but this is a gamble.
It's all well and good us being excited on here, but is your average PS4 owner going to go for it? I really don't think so.
Wonderbook 2 here is going to have a tough time......
Can I make an elaborate castle, say Helms Deep, or is it just gonna be one tiny corridor?
@mclarenrob2 That's what I would like to know as well. What's the limit? Surely there's a limit on how many objects or polygons the game can handle.
This looks ace - I will support it just for the creativity and passion shown.
@Octane there's a thermometer that stops you from doing too much but they say it's detail that fills it up, not necessarily size. We've havnt seen any huge levels yet
If making levels is as fun as this video is showing, I can see dreams become more popular than little big planet, this is the true little big planet 2
I'm gonna make a modern version of Operation Wulf with this... using the move controller...
Pretty cool what ya can do and this is looking like a crossover between PS4 and 5 eventually..
Hot damn, that's awesome.
Question for the pessimists... are you not aware that you, personally, don't have to create anything? This game is three games in one without a creating a thing.
And we all are aware how good Media Molecule games are, aren't we?
@SirRealDeal Media Molecule are great. But unfortunately many gamers haven’t got the memo yet. Exhibit A: Tearaway.
@mclarenrob2 Yeah, a thermometer — it’s measuring how hot it’s making your PS4 so as to limit the size of the level to just before the fan overloads and the PS4 melts.
@Th3solution
Tearaway on Vita is fantastic. Why they brought it to PS4 is a mystery to me.
@b1ackjack_ps
Definitely better with Move controllers, I'm sure.
I'm also sure those with PSVR who are into this (myself definitely included) are gonna reap mad rewards.
@b1ackjack_ps that is exactly the same concern I have.
This game is going to be one of the most creative and mind-boggling games ever made, but I also think a clunky “standard” controller is probably not the most comfortable way to control it, though of course MM will have made sure the interface is the best they could get out of that.
Actually I stop and think about stuff like this, like how games have evolved in the last 20 years but controllers and controlling methods haven’t, and how a lot of modern games require clunky inputs for the more complex actions.
@SirRealDeal I agree, Tearaway was very good. It had that Mm charm and innovation. Probably the only game that really ever used that rear touch pad for anything worthwhile. Tearaway fell victim to the Vita’s own unfortunate poor market performance. It’s hard to sell a ton of games on a platform that doesn’t have a very large install base. So then the attempt at Tearaway Unfolded was likely a last ditch effort to make something out of that game on a more popular console. Obviously that failed, maybe because the game was not marketed well, maybe many saw it as a Vita port and felt it would be subpar, or maybe releasing along side MGSV just killed it.
I watched this whole thing and all I want is to recreate the entire Hind D zone from MGS1!
This has really loads of potential
What are the odds on a Dreams-made FF7 remake coming to consoles before the real thing?
@Th3solution God I hope this never happens to Media Molecule. They are quite a small reputable studio, I hope even if Dreams don't sell as well as expected Sony is willing to keep them afloat. I think all of us who are following this game deep down are very worried about this.
