September's PlayStation Plus games have just been announced, and in a surprise twist, the headline act, Destiny 2, is available to download right now. According to the PlayStation Blog, you can get the game on PS Plus today in order to partake in a trial of a new game mode.
"As a special treat, the game is available on PS Plus today – a week early – so that you can take advantage of the 24 hour free trial of Destiny 2: Forsaken’s new hybrid PVE & PVP mode, Gambit, which starts September 1 at 10 AM PDT. That’s right, you can get Destiny 2 right now! Rally your friends in Gambit and prepare for Destiny 2: Forsaken."
It's clear that Activision wants Destiny 2 in as many player's hands as possible ahead of the game's new content, so this seems like a clever move. Will you be playing Destiny 2 via PS Plus today? Queue up that download in the comments below.

Smart move from everyone involved. Download Destiny 2 for free. Like it? Want more? Well we have this huge expansion coming out in a week...
But to buy that you'll need to buy the two previous expansions first.
They know what they're doing!
Activision is just like that dodgy guy in the club who hits on every girl in the club until one of them doesn't say no.
This is quite a huge month for PS Plus... perhaps even better than the month we got Ratchet & Clank.
@ShogunRok oh, do you definitely need the first two expansions before the third? I’m newish to destiny so I didn’t know how that worked.
“Also, our other 2 expansions are half off this week in the U.S.”
@ztpayne7 Yeah I believe you need the last two expansions in order to play Forsaken.
The base version is pretty 'worthless' now. You won't be able to access certain items (weapons/armour) and content that others can and will find yourself at a 'lower' power level to others too - not that it matters for PvP and the power level scales so that 'high power' guardians don't smash low powered enemies so wipe everything out leaving low-powered guardians with little to contribute.
In fairness though, there is still a lot of worthwhile content for those who want go quite deep into the end game. Its almost unfortunate that its coming free now as the gap between those with the expansions - inc Forsaken - is just going to grow. Those with friends playing Destiny may find those friends less willing to play the base content with so much 'new' to discover and one of the 'best' aspects of Destiny is teaming up with others and tackling some of the end-game content.
It's cool and I will be downloading it but I'm still planning on just get the complete edition in a years time.
You know they are desperate and the game is doing bad if they they are giving it out for free
I never played Destiny, including the first game, I’m probably the only one too. Anyway, I will check it now to see what this series is about.
Nah that boat done sailed . U do t take back ex girlfriends thay did ya wrong . So why games?
@PS_Nation nope i havent either . And this attempt by bungie to try and get me interested still wont work
I played the first game like a solo casual and really enjoyed it. Hopefully I can casually stroll through this game and enjoy it, too.
@ShogunRok marketing at its best. Give the engine they ll buy the content. And I believe the content cost as much as the engine.
@ShogunRok
They are the Devil.
They make us do 'things'
Would have preferred the complete version of Destiny 1.
One thing is for sure. Last time I buy a Destiny game at full price on day of release.
Feel a bit ripped off and stupid for having paid £60 for a digital copy of Destiny 2 on day of release.
I'd recommend all you haters grab a buddy or two and take on a couple of Strike missions
@Tasuki pretty sure Bungie also got a fairly substantial cheque to allow their less-than-a-year-old game be accessible and 'free' to paying PS Plus subscribers. Plus (pun intended), Destiny 2 is/was in a marketing deal with PlayStation anyway. All things considered, they will both benefit greatly from this.
The explanations are still off-putting though. If it’s line the first one, the stories you play leveled up are only for the new expansion level caps, effectively locking you out of part of the game each time an expansion comes out. If not cool, but I feel like this just isn’t a lot to get.
I might add it to my collection but I doubt I'll actually get around to playing it
@ShogunRok You should do an article on Destiny 2, I tried to look up all the expansion pass nonsense but it gave me a headache. Forsaken is a $40 DLC for a $60 game that comes with it's own $35 season pass, but you need to have purchased last year's yearly pass to play this one? Looks like $200 for the complete game, maybe $100 with PS+. All they are missing is amiibo. 😛
Activision seem pretty desperate. I might give them a ring and see if I can buy some of their office furniture cheap
@ReigningSemtex just think how many games you'll have to play in your IGC backlog if the PS5 does end up being backward compatible.
@BladeRider you never briefly take back an ex for an anger bang? I mean you may not be happy with yourself after, but you were able to blow off some steam.😂
@kyleforrester87 I think that’s what a lot of players aren’t understanding about Destiny in general. It’s ok solo, but a blast with friends. It’s a solid social experience.
Activision looks desperate. Destiny is a good game, but the expansions doesn’t offer enough for the price they ask for.
They did the same for the original Destiny... I hoped they’d learn, but no.
I’ll wait for a good discount if I ever buy it.
Fortnite must be shaking in its boots 🙄
@Bliquid if you download D2 and enjoy the game, then that’s a valid reason. For me it’s as simple as that. I enjoy playing Destiny with my group of friends so if I have to spend $30-40 three times a year to continue the story and get more content I don’t have a problem with it since I feel I get my money’s worth.
Why does everyone seem to hate destiny so much? Seems pretty much the same formula as every paid mmo I've ever played. Might not be a good formula but its not a new one. I played EQ back in the day and then WoW and they seem to have done the exact same things and I loved them games. I just don't really have the time anymore to invest in a game like this. But I'll probably download it and check it out. If I'm missing something plz call me out on it. I'm just curious of all the hate.
@ellsworth004 because it's easier for people to be dismissive and say something is silly and move on with their lives than to actually invest and see what all the fuss is about. For others, they have crazy expectations about paying £50 once for a game with years of unlimited free content.
I dunno, I can understand it to a point - look at Warframe. And Bungie have made mistakes with the series for sure.
Still, it's totally something you should try for yourself with realistic expectations.
I've been fooled before and I'll be fooled again but not this time Activision! Maybe you'll get me again with Destiny 3.
@ShogunRok @ztpayne7
Copied from the US PS Store:
DESTINY 2 GAME, DESTINY 2 EXPANSIONS I & II REQUIRED, SOLD SEPARATELY
@Bliquid there is a difference between a game that's fun and a good game? I dunno about that.
@Bliquid I hope you can find peace.
@Bliquid you should see some of the stuff I did in year 8
@SMKpaladin thank you!
I've started playing this and now that I'm past the part that I played in the demo, I've got Destiny fever all over again. Awoken warlock aren't I.
@ApostateMage ya mug! How dare ya!
I grabbed the game because why not, it's free .
Doubt I'll ever play it though not my kind of game.
I've had Destiny 2 free since my wife got me the white PS4 Pro for my birthday last year (which came with Destiny 2), but I have never bothered taking it out of shrink wrap because Destiny original was such a loathsome self hating experience to waste time on.
@Bliquid I think I played 800+ hours of Destiny original from time it launched all the way up to release of 2nd expansion around which I finally gave up on the game and Bungie making the game less painful experience for players. They just wanted to reset the "work" and start you anew on new grind quests.
In any case, easily 90% of those hours were reason to loath the game because they were played in pursuit of trying to get one freaking thing that I wanted that the game would never drop for me nor offer via XUR or some other way. To then see that for people that are spending 1000+ hours to finally get some thing, a future expansion just makes it obsolete told me everything I needed to know about Bungie and Destiny.
The game was work and it was pointless work.
