DOOM was one of 2016’s most beloved releases, but you rarely hear anyone mention its disappointing multiplayer mode. There was an opportunity with the reboot to bring back the old-school arena-based combat of old, but developer id Software farmed out the competitive mode to Certain Affinity and it just didn’t come together to quite the same level as the campaign.
Fortunately, online multiplayer will return in DOOM Eternal – and it’s being built internally this time around. “It’s something we’re developing internally, which we didn’t do last time,” Marty Stratton told Polygon. “I think players are going to really enjoy it. It’s new. It’s not an extension of what we did last time. So it’s new.”
As announced during a QuakeCon 2018 keynote yesterday, the title will also feature a new Invasion mode, which will allow players to assume the role of demons and infiltrate other peoples’ campaigns. You’ll be able to turn it off if you prefer to play totally solo, but we like the idea of this addition, and we’re eager to see it in action for ourselves.

Could be interesting, I loved this in Dark Souls and Bloodborne, made an already fantastic game even better.
As long as they don't use resources intended for the singleplayer it's okay. We already have many multiplayer shooters, but they are clearly talented developers so we could expect some good things.
I NEED THIS GAME NOW.
I've played Doom on custom-built coax lan and 9inch b&w monitors back in the day. I've even networked my house with my cousin's a block away just to play Doom & others. I think invasion mode is a stroke of genius, even not really knowing how it will play, the idea is fantastic. I mean, gamers usually complains about how bad AI is, for solo campaigns but now you can have "the solo campaign enemies" being controlled by humans... So hour it could be bad? Ok. Stupids are everywhere... I guess we need to wait and see.
Maybe it will work this time but I dont have my hopes up. Im just in it for the single player
The multiplayer was decent, still full lobbies 24/7, but it definitely needs/needed more maps. Interested to see how they'll implement the WatchDogsesque invasion!
Hopefully ID will have the multiplayer similar to stuff like the old Quake and Unreal Tournament.
Don't get me wrong, Doom 2016's multiplayer was alright, but it doesn't stick out like the old stuff.
Transforming into demons during a match was fun, though.
