You’ll only be able to play the first of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s three games if your PlayStation 4’s not connected to the Internet, as Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon will both require content downloads in order to run. The potentially irksome news was spotted on the website for the platforming compilation. The positive news is that it sounds like you won’t need to redeem a code or anything like that; the titles will be unlocked with a patch, which will download automatically when you pop the game inside your console.
It’s not entirely clear why this is the case. Required content downloads have become common on the Nintendo Switch, but that’s because its cartridges can be quite small in size, and it costs publishers more money to manufacture larger ones. This obviously isn’t an issue on the PS4, where Blu-rays are relatively inexpensive and can hold lots of data. The only thing we can think of is that Activision needs to press discs, but the game isn’t finished, so instead of delaying it’s enforcing a patch which will polish everything off. That’s purely our own speculation by the way, but we can’t think of a better reason right now.

I bought it on the PSN. So I'm downloading all three.
This is my fear with all digital games. What happens in 20 years if you pick this game up (wanting a bit of retro)
The servers will be off by then so you'll only be able to play the first game
If I buy an old Snes or Megadrive game I can be sure it'll play exactly as intended no matter how old it is, the same can't be said for modern games
It's a bit of a weird one, isn't it?
knowing activison,i'd say they are just lazy.
also a bad move because there are always people out there that because of internet related issues won't be able to play the 2 other games.
this will also increase the install time for no good reason even for people with good internet.
Is this a lawsuit? Calling it a trilogy when it's really not in the box? Uh, oh... O.o
PC version it is then.
@starhops not realy.
you still get all the 3 games for the price you payed,so they are not crossing any marketing law.
the only thing that could be controversial is the fact that you have to download most of the content,but again if it's without extra cost then you still get what you payed for.
still a bummer though.
@Marios-love-child such a shame. That’s why I’m always advocating for rereleasing games at the end of their cycle so all dlc and updates are on disc/cartridge, no matter how good or bad the game is. Long live game long livety.
Since everybody else is speculating I say at the very least this is the latest effort by publishers to try and kill the pre-owned market and tying into that, a way to test for the all-digital future these people want.
Yet all 3 crash game are on disc yet they couldn't do it with this one
Well, this is weird for sure. But it doesn't change anything for me so I'm cool with that.
I think 2 and 3 not being finished before the discs being printed is the most likely reason. Not particularly interesting or insidious - but not a million miles away from disc versions of BTTF or MCSM etc
Well that's silly
Punishing anyone who doesn't have access to a solid WiFi connection. Nasty.
This is a perfect illustration of why I don't bother with physical games anymore because the reality is they don't actually exist.
All this talk if what if they remove the games from the servers but let's look at it the other way. Try playing this in such a case and you'll get one game out of 3 or No Man's Sky, remember that at launch even The Witcher 3 plays a lot better than the on disc code.
Back to the story though and Activision sucks 😝
Doesn't affect me since I have internet and don't mind them not being on the disc, so no problem.
I'm a bit confused by this.
So you have to download the second and third games from the internet, but it doesn't require a claim code? What about second-hand copies?
This is VERY strange.
I used to be disc-only-games kinda gal, but I mostly buy digital anymore. Could be the 5T external HDD that helped decide that though. Or maybe my lazy butt having to get up each time I want to change games.
Activision can get 3 crash games on one disc but not 3 Spyro games?
well that's a bad thing if you ask me what about in the future once the PS4/XB1 servers are all turned off, how will collectors be able to get all the games, it's like that last Tony Hawks game where the disc only included the tutorial and the rest of the game was in the day one "patch"
if your buying a game and it's advertised as a trilogy like this then it should include ALL the games on the disc
ToysForBob must be behind schedule but Activision don't want to delay due what comes in October and November.
Awkward moment when 2 of the 3 big September games... Spiderman & Shadow of the Tomb Raider... go gold way ahead of schedule, yet the lil purple dragon unfortunately appears to be trailing behind.
I have perfectly fine internet to download, but i might be stubborn and wait to see if they actually put all 3 titles on the disc eventually.
Nope, I’m not getting it. If I do by off chance, it’ll be pre-owned. This is a despicable practice. I had to be on the disc. Day-one patches are pushing it, but this is too much. I’ll need to look out for this crap on the Switch too.
Welp this just dropped from my top 5 September list, oh well i'll be too busy with Sipderman & Shadow of the tomb raider anyways
Such a shame. They lost 2 sales. I emailed them (toys for bob) about this. My question is why not just make it a digital only title? Or delay the game for a few months, january would be great.Such an anti consumer practice. Not buying...
Activision is garbage, bunch of morons.
This is poor practice. I may well wait for a sale before getting it now. There's a lot of other games releasing in September for me to get, so Spyro is now a much lower priority for me.
why the hell is it on bluray then
@Ralizah It's simple. Once you pop the disc in it automatically begins to download the extra content. I got Bloodborne GOTY used and it was the same thing.
Doesn't bother me, still a day one purchase for me. YAY SPYRO
@Orpheus79V So are the downloaded games locked to your account, or are they downloadable on any system this disc is inserted into?
Wow. Looks like I'm not buying this now.
This is......dumb. Just dumb.
Uh...You DON'T need active Internet to play this, just to download it. @Get2SammyB your wording is causing confusion...
@Ralizah It is most likely the latter, just like Bloodborne was.
@Ralizah likely drm tied to the disc rather than PSN download.
@ReanSchwarzer7 But I didn't use those words in the article at all? I just said you'll have to download content, which is true.
Hmm? Did I misread that...oops, my bad. >_>
I'm surprised by the comments, physical games died since the beginning of this generation on every console, like I said in other article even if the games release complete and even call definitive edition developers later on release patches to fix bugs and even more dlc (I'm looking at you FFXVI royal), physical games are never gonna be complete anymore, developers don't like physical media because the second market they don't want you to buy there game used, so the best way for them it's digital. That's why I only buy physical for the goodies or because they are cheaper than digital, honestly all I care it's about the price either digital or physical works for me
@carlos82 so does the ps store actually update the download of a full game to the latest version or do you download the day one version and then subsequent patches/updates?
I always go for disc if possible, just because I have something with resell value.
This is also what happens when you buy the complete season of any telltale game, you only get episode one on disc and download the rest, really hate this practice.
That’s just insane! What a disappointment!!
Lazy as Always.
I was going to wait for a PSN flash sale anyways.
@tameshiyaku I think it's a mixture of both, for the most part it'll download the original version and the updates together. Though games like No Man's Sky will now be the latest version and The Witcher 3 is, also DOOM is an updated version which is a much smaller file. Generally games with major updates or Game of the year editions will be swapped over but in either case you'll never notice as you download or indeed ever see the original version.
I get the whole resell thing and that's probably the only reason I'd buy a physical game now and this is from somebody who has a large collection of Atari, NES, SNES, Megadrive, N64 games and a few others. As I said though back then you were playing the game on the cartridge and the boxes plus cartridges were much more appealing and you also had manuals, these days they're just glorified product keys to me
@carlos82 yeah, in most cases your right, its just a disc in a loveless designed box, but some developers do go the extra mile.
It could be a rights issue like with Tony Hawk. Maybe they are losing the rights soon or they are coming up to be renewed and they needed to print the physical disc before those rights were up. At least its a full one game on the disc, Tony Hawk got just a tutorial and the day one patch was the rest of the horrible game
@Splat
Because $39.99 for three games just wipes you out does it?
@NinjaWaddleDee
Because you don't have internet?
@Ralizah
Most likely tied to the disc, they will require the disc to play the other titles. DRMs are fun
@RoyalGuard
Anti consumer? Really? Because they require you to connect your readily available internet capable device to the internet and download something? It's silly, but I think you are taking it a little extreme
@LieutenantFatman
You can hard wire connect a PS4 too, hell 100 ft of Ethernet cable on Amazon doesn't cost that much
@KratosMD
Do you not see the irony that you posted this comment about having to download something using an internet connection on the internet?
@steventonysmith I wasn't going to play it right away with games I'm more interested in coming out around the same time. Why pay full price if I'm going to wait to play it anyways?
@Splat
Saying you are going to wait to play it because you have some other games coming out before it or around its release first is better than saying you are going to wait for a flash sale.
@steventonysmith Sounds like I might as well go digital, then.
This sucks for anyone who still doesn't have decent internet, which sadly still happens alot.
I was Day One for this collection, now that's off.
I need more information about this situation...
I may buy Digital next year when it's on sale. For now, sale lost.
