Sony said that it was “confident” of a cross-console play solution on the PlayStation 4, and it genuinely wasn’t lying. PlayStation president John Kodera has taken to the PlayStation Blog to announce an open beta for Fortnite, which will allow “cross-platform gameplay, progression, and commerce across the PS4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems”. Wow!
The company admits that the beta is an “opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective”, so it is very much baby steps. However, it admitted that “the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players”, and that it’s exploring ways to be more open moving forwards.
Kodera concluded: “This represents a major policy change for Sony Interactive Entertainment, and we are now in the planning process across the organisation to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.” Absolutely huge news, then – but the company really was listening to your feedback.

Wow, they actually weren't lying. They really were exploring the possibilities of doing this.
@get2sammyb i think there was an issue with PSN itself that was holding cross console play up and that was why it has taken so long
Finally, people can shut up about cross-play. The neverending nightmare has ended.
@ShogunRok I look forward to never using it, personally.
@ShogunRok it still wont stop them, next they will be complaining about another game that doesn't have like Rocket League for example
@FullbringIchigo The PlayStation Blog post says that it's a policy change, so theoretically once they've done all their testing, this can come to any game.
@get2sammyb yep i saw that bit, it still wont stop people though, this is the internet after all
Very positive news for those that wanted it! Good going, Sony.
Finally we can move on with our lives .... I hope we never hear about this crap again.
@ShogunRok now they'll complain it wasn't done fast enough!
NANI?!!
Thumbs up Sony. I see they're getting in the 'we're the good guys' community work before the next generation drops. Smart move.
@redd214 They already are!
But what about protecting your users, Sony?
It would be "expanding" crossplay on PS4. It already has it with PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
@LaNooch1978 BUT...BUT MS have 6 teraflops........ 6 TERAFLOPS!!
@get2sammyb could be one of the reasons we'd not heard much out of Sony recently, because they wanted to drop all this positive news on us like a ton of bricks and silence the toxic fanboys of the competing systems. What are your thoughts?
@ShogunRok @redd214 Yep, already seen plenty of "took too long" crap.
@LaNooch1978 PSN name changes confirmed!
@ShogunRok Are you serious? Lol, next they're gonna be saying Sony doesn't have a competitor to Forza Horizon...
Oh wait...
@Turismo4GT God I wish they did. Will probably get an Xbone black Friday just for FH4
Oh thank bloody god, now this stupid cross play nonsense can die down.
@RogerRoger savage
@RogerRoger well they did have Sea of Thieves so.....
yeah
@LaNooch1978 i dunno but MS seem pretty stocked about it ^_^, it's all xbox gamers go on about
This is huge news, but finally there's no outrage anymore, it's tiring to hear this again and again when somebody says something cross-play lol.
But I don’t want to play with Xbots and Nintendrones.
I personally think shared online communities are bad for the walled garden that is console gaming, but good on Sony for giving the vocal minority what they want.
Next up:
Exclusives are anti-consumer so put them on everything. /s
@Wesker be honest though if you have friends and or family who own the other systems it's a good thing right
@Turismo4GT that’s silly. PlayStation has serveral open world car games.
Gee, I wonder what brought this on?
@rjejr I doubt it:
@FullbringIchigo yeah it’s a good thing. I could actually see myself playing some Rocket League cross-platform with family members.
@Wesker T H E N
D O N ‘ T
There, now people can quit whining about it.
@Wesker I think most games that support cross-console play allow you to turn it off.
@Fight_Teza_Fight only hackers can do that
That won’t ever change
@get2sammyb Problem was, 2 of those consoles could play together, 1 couldn't, so which one stood out, but in a bad way? Sony was basically advertising - "Play Fortnite on PS4, lock in your money with us, don't play well with others". Not a good look for them. This levels the playing field, while being a win for them.
Will be curious to see what's next. Rocket League seems likely, and probably Minecraft: Crazy New Name Edition, but what about bigger games like FIFA or Destiny?
Well there goes my big PS5 cross-play launch announcement down the drain.
good.
not that i will ever use this,but altleast the "reputable" gaming sites and youtubers can finally shut up about this.
and no todd howard,they did not give in because of your little card game.
@Wesker oh I know there are plenty of 3rd party open world racers on the current platform. First party though, is lacking. Let's see what Sony have up their sleeves.
**YAWN**
@get2sammyb 😅
Now give us Rocket League
@nintendofan4lyf Well our coversation earlier seems a touch out of date now lol
@Turismo4GT you think Sony are developing an open world car game? I don’t think they even have a studio for that.
Okay, so now that this issue is practically resolve, the burning question is...
What is the gaming corner of the internet going to complain about tomorrow?
Oh, wait... they still need to get their head around the fact that PS4/PS3 backwards compatibility is never going to happen.
Well since it’s happening, they should make some fighting games cross play. I can’t really get down with Minecraft and Fortnite.
@Paranoimia kinda funny that the internet ALWAYS comes up with "reasons" to bash sony.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are sharing tweets together now. I only popped out to the shops for a couple of hours, I come back and all of a sudden I'm in the Twilight Zone
In all seriousness I never believed it was that big an issue but the big take away from this is Sony IS listening and isn't arrogant.
If anything they have played a blindy cos their doing it now from a position of strength in the marketplace rather letting the issue potentially linger into the PS5 era.
@RogerRoger if they genuinely listen and give a darn where's our EA Access
Hahahahaha! What have I been saying all along?! 😆 Crossplay is indeed the next evolution in online console gaming. Gamers demand it.
I feel vindicated, but I expect no apologies from those on PS who insulted me. 😉
@Derpie1 A platform holders greatest strength is its exclusives, it’s services & it’s install base.
Now having the largest install base no longer matters. Everyone is swimming in the same pool.
@ShogunRok Oh yes. My thoughts exactly. Hopefully, that "we want cross play with Sony, they are so anti customer" whining comes to an end now.
It's almost the end of the Gen so maybe sony was like "fine just give them what they want". So good for those who play fortnite I guess
@EVIL-C Woe is me.
I glad Sony has finally done the right thing.
@Kyroki
you do not need special software for cross play with pc players for vc
Same old arrogant sony. Doing what the vocal minority want shakes fist
Thank god that nonsense is over with. So bored of hearing all the moaning about x-platform play. It will be interesting to see stats on how many actually use this though. So will microsoft revise their love in adverts with nintendo for minecraft now and include Sony. Or will they quietly pretend all this never happened...
At least Sony can now crack on with what they do best. Top drawer exclusive gameplay experiences.
@adf86 Exactly my point.
Wow, wasn't expecting this today. Amazing news. Hope this gets patched into plenty older games released over the last few years. Should be a nice community boost for some title.
@EVIL-C I'm not the one after a pity party. Just because Sony are allowing Cross play now doesn't mean some of us all of a sudden want it. If anything their just relieved that people can bloody shut up about it now. The staff said it best in comment 2 and 3.
So I got a from the devil himself and he says if you plan on visiting him bring a jacket. Also watch out for those flying pigs of you plan any air travel today. And wait what's this the Browns won the Super Bowl???
Did I wake up in an alternative timeline like in Back to the Future??
I wonder if many of Xbox's "console exclusive" multiplayer games will also come to the PS4 now that Sony is now open for corss-platform play.
I always felt that Sony was hesitant because of the PSN security issues they’ve had in the past, and the backlash they’ve received. Things are going incredibly well for Sony, and I think that they didn’t want new issues (and the bad press that obviously would have followed) resulting in them hoping on a wave.So they wanted to make sure they had their bases covered.
Yikes, there goes another fanboy flaming article setup for NL. They're running out of clickbait fast this week!
I wonder what the next huge whinge-athon will be about now?
[Yawn] who cares about a game for 7 yr olds. Is this happening with battlefield or R6 siege? I guess if you cry about something long enough...Gaming is going down the drain fast.
@manu0 Still someone has to cry thats what the Beta testing is for.
@RedMageLanakyn Dutch people complain all the time i know because im Dutch. 😁
I've been tired of the cross play debate for a while now. So much salt from all sides has been spilled. I'm just glad it's been halted for now. Who'd think cross console play would bring the worst out of everyone, eh?
Finally! Congrats Sony you have come to your senses...such a simple thing!
@get2sammyb @ShogunRok But to be fair, does this not showcase the power of immense whining?
@Jaz007 Unfortunately.
I bet the xbox exclusive "multiplayer" games make it over too now that cross play a thing. Any chance the last of us 2, God of war, etc appears on xbox?
@RoyalGuard nah, with the success they had with Spiderman and GoW? I doubt it
Its funny how this quote is so easy to forget now, lol. "On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PS4 is the best experience for users – that's our belief." on why they were saying no to cross platform. So are we just supposed to belive that Sony is now the good guy in all this debacle ? Lets face it its all down to the stick the fans and Devs were giving them.
Well, sounds like good news for niche games with small player bases anyway, assuming they rule it out to those.
Must admit it was vexing when I used to play Armoed Core online and it was dead most of the time, knowing players on Xbox had exactly the same problem.
@RedMageLanakyn @Kidfried This! The amount of flame bait on NL is enormous. I also get creeped out by some guy who likes "kiddie games".
@Flaming_Kaiser i'm just reminding sony about the BS they said previously on the topic lol
Does this mean that I will be able to chat to my xbox friends in game?
Great, now shut the servers and end this nonsense game.
What Sony says now it's the same ambiguous bs as before but the other way round now.
@Grey_Area unless the voice chat goes through the game itself then NO but you could always use something like Skype
Sony's the best way to play this... maybe not.
I'd prefer if they stuck to their guns, bit of respect lost.
Excellent news. Now I just need to find someone in my postcode who has an Xbox
EDIT: and will admit to it publicly
@BlueOcean How is it?
@RustyBullet You got what you wanted, is that not enough? They were clearly evaluating the business implications of all this, and have come to a decision on it. Yes, it could have happened quicker, but the bottom line is that it's happened. Some of you people could get given a cheque for a million dollars and still whine you didn't have it last week.
Lame, Sony couldn’t handle the pressure of the vocal minority and the elitists of the gaming press. Anyway, I hope people now STFU about this and move on.
By the way, Xbox is the only platform that requires Live and lock a free-to-play game like Fortnite under a paywall, let’s see the outrage of the wonderful media about this now.
@PS_Nation I'm guessing its just Sony PR trying to secure as much consumer trust as they can, maybe the PS5 is much closer than we think
Guessing too many people were selling their PS4 to get an Xbox or Switch to play Fortnite against all systems so Sony finally took notice. This is sarcastic by the way. Who would sell the console with the strongest line up this generation to play a free to play title? This move shows how confident Sony is though. The locking of accounts indicated a little doubt in their own product to me.
@Agramonte Glad youre pointing this out, stories seem to so often gloss over detail these days for impact, then others repeat the same thing without checking the facts.
Anyway, Im in the 'makes no difference to me' camp for this game, but hopefully this will stop some console owners being so upset. I suppose they should have allowed it in the first place for those that are into the game, but I guess now eveyone is happy and can move on...
I still don't know what Fortnite is or why any of this was ever a big deal to begin with.
Then again, I'm just an onion. Uproot me when Fist of the North Star and Red Dead Redemption 2 are out.
That lil extra time and money sony spent getting this off the ground is gonna cost the gamers.. mark my words ps plus will go up in price along side xblive, and switch online. These brands are not our friends or out to do what the gamer wants its a money thing. I see nothing good about this but I also don't play fortnite.
@Ristar24 Yep, It made zero difference to me. With PC/PS4/iOS, pretty much covered everyone I Know.
If you have friends that only have a Switch you cant play 99% of online games with them anyway - Because the games are not on it regardless. So that argument made zero sense.
I guess, it is cool (if you have both) that you now can use a Switch like a VITA game with Cross Save. Play on Switch on the Go, and continue at home with the better PS4 version. But could do that with an iOS phone anyway.
Sure, maybe they should have from the start... but like you said - now it is done - everyone can move on.
I doubt I will use it, but at least this will be the end of the articles on this subject. Was so bored of it.
Not sure I be too happy in playing with a load of PC hackers though.
A great surprise! Looking forward to expanded playerbases for future games.
@Flaming_Kaiser This will be the last time I remind you of the community rules
Do not use profanity; Use of unsavoury language including profanity and swearing is not acceptable, please remember that this website has users of all ages.
So next time be mindful of what you say because the next time will earn you a temporary vacation from the site
Thank you for understanding
I hope none of my friends who play on other platforms except me to play this game now because we can play together. Nope! ESO for me thank you!
A huge long-term blunder for a short-term PR 'win.' MS had the right idea last-gen when it told Sony to f off in regards to cross-play. All those Xbox gamers now have one less reason to get a PS4 next-gen. Closed off online was a massive selling point and one MS certainly wouldn't have given up had it not been smoked this gen. But Phil Spencer and crew trolled Sony into this, so good on them. Now maybe the always wonderful and consumer-friendly MS can allow free-to-play games to be played without the paywall of XBL Gold? Or is that a talking point that's not allowed to be mentioned?
I come across some really charming people whilst playing Rocket League on just PSN alone so more kids to swear at me and shout noob will be awesome. Happy to be an avid single player gamer and not constantly have to put up with that. I preferred the good old days where there were 4 of us crammed round a 14" t.v. and anyone cheating would get a dead arm 😅
@Amplified
That's what I'm thinking. Definitely a PR move and an indication that the next-gen is closer than everybody is expecting. Things like cross-play, backwards compatibility, etc, will be big talking points. I never thought cross-play was important and while others don't like to look at business aspects, I do, and this move certainly doesn't benefit Sony in anyway. However, it does take away one thing the media can spin as a negative, now Sony needs to get on the ball with b/c. MS is absolutely destroying Sony, and to a lesser extent Nintendo, on this. I don't want to hear the excuses, PS5 will be out in 2019 or 2020, and with all the tech available there should be no problem getting PS1-4 games on it.
Atm games like Fortnite and playing with PS communities has been a friendly and fun affair... Few game rants, few rage quits, a great place to just chill and enjoy gaming socially. I wonder as of today Sept 2018 if by cross platforming the toxicity might increase. Just my observation but Xbox fanboys (not the decent average Xbox player) are mega toxic and delusional! Gates have been opened!
@Fight_Teza_Fight
No, you have to get this right. 'PlayStation exclusives are anti-consumer' it's perfectly fine for MS and Nintendo to have them. That's the complete cesspool of stupidity the gaming community has delved into these days. First it was Spider-Man, now ports of old Castlevania games that can still be bought on other platforms, just not in a two-for-one bundle.
So wait .... did I read that right? On Xbox, Fortnite requires a Live subscription and on PS4, no PS Plus subscription is required??
Forgive my ignorance. Obviously I care very little about Fortnite, online gaming, and cross-play since I’m barely getting around to care enough to read this breaking news from yesterday despite being on the site several times. 😂
@Th3solution every online game on XBOX requires XBLGold even the free to play ones for some reason
and yes before anyone says anything i have both systems and i have checked and every F2P game i tried was locked behind XBLG on XB1 but perfectly playable on PS4 without PSN+
@FullbringIchigo That is remarkably anti-consumer on Microsoft’s part, isn’t it? I’m just surprised to not have read similar “outrage” against MS for charging when Sony does not.
Now, with this news I do wonder if that will change and Sony start to require Plus for F2P games, however.
@Th3solution well you know fanboys, point out the competitors issues without looking at your own
although i'm not sure if they are doing it on purpose or if it's just something to do with the was XBL works, it could be that they can't do it but the thing is MS NEVER talk about their issues or how they might fix them, they just clam up and don't say a thing
case in point the XB1 sales numbers, they wont release them because they are lower then the PS4 and by a huge amount according to estimates (last i heard they were about 30 million units sold to Sony's 70 million PS4's but that was at the beginning of the year)
@DMG361132 Microsoft doesnt have exclusives. What are you on?
I know alot of friend that are happy about this, kudos to Sony for going thru.
