There is no denying Rockstar's dedication to deliver fans the best immersive experience of the wild west with the long awaited Red Dead Redemption 2. Those who jump onto the rodeo bandwagon will see the fruits of that hard work in a map players can be sure to get lost in once in a while.
For gamers in need of a more accessible guide, the publisher will launch an app on the game's release day for both iOS and Google Play. By connecting it directly with your PS4, you will have the option to completely remove the in-game HUD, "delivering real-time interactive information to your smart device." As such, with a simple tap, you will have everything from locating quests, setting waypoints, and even reading Arthur's journal as you progress through the story. Throwing in a little bonus the game's digital manual is included, and you can opt to grab a digital copy of the official guide.
The addition of apps is no strange feature in the video game land. In fact, Sony's range of PlayLink titles, such as Hidden Agenda, requires the use of your phone to actually play the game.
Will you be downloading the Red Dead Redemption 2 companion app, or does this take you out of the immersion? Fire up your thoughts in the comments below.

Turn the hud off with my phone? Crazy!
Interesting concept. I’ll sometimes use my phone while playing a game anyways to reference a guide or unofficial map with markers of secrets and such. However I can see it being an inconvenience without having the mini-map on the game screen. Immersion or convenience ... which will I choose? 🤔
Either way, I am starting to feel a little hyped again for this game, which I had grown a wee bit complacent about. Still trying to decide if I want to be all-in on day 1.
Not for me but cool for those that will use it.
Nice addition, I'll be giving it a try fo' sho'.
I love it when they make apps to the game! Not only is it someting u can look at when u ain't playing the game. Its also someting u can share with your friends or partner 😁
@sham8nix
Its fantastic. Im going to play with no minimap and my tablet handy.
Since I connect my PS4 to internet via smartphone as router I can't use companion apps running on the same phone. Anyone knows a workaround?
Ooooh this could be cool. I'm hoping to play without the HUD this time out as long as the game is still playable (it wasn't in RDR 1 or GTA V). This could work though. This way if I'm really lost or need a guide point, I can optionally check my phone rather than have a permanent rader pinned on the screen.
I've yet to see a companion app really add value to a game, but I don't mind R* trying and I'll give it a go.
I'm not precious about my HUD though. Immersion is great and all that, but I'm not counting my bullets to know how many are left in the mag, or trying to guess when my dead-eye meter will run out. It is still a game to be enjoyed.
I do like a companion app.
The NFS Rivals and AC Black Flag ones were great fun.
So, I’m assuming you can turn off the mini map regardless of whether you’re using the app or not. If so, I’ll just be doing that. 👌
@Neolit if these companion apps were available on vita that would be pretty great.
I will give the app a try. I always try to turn of minimaps, because once they are on screen I usually just walk to the next marker without paying attention to any in-Game details. This breaks immersion and RDR2 is all about immersion. However, I also tend to get lost and need to check the map more often then I want to. The map on a second screen seems like a perfect solution for me.
love this
Yeah I'm gonna turn off the HUD and use the app as a map. Yeah its digital but it beats pulling up a menu every 5 min
Never found any of these phone apps to be that useful and normally end up deleting them pretty quick, but might try it and see. I'm tempted to turn off the mini map anyway and try getting around with the paper map laid out in front of me like a true cowboy.
Wow this is really cool of Rockstar. Almost makes me regret canceling my preorder but I needed the money.
