Sony has landed a whopping 20 award nominations at The Game Awards 2018, more than doubling second placed publisher Rockstar, who managed nine. It’s a testament to just how impressive the PlayStation 4 has been this year, and while it’s both God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man sweeping the nominations, there’s also room for Detroit: Become Human and Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which also got nods.
Of course there’s no guarantee that the Japanese giant will win any of these awards, but being nominated this many times alone is an indication of how good the platform holder’s output has been. And when you consider that the excellent MLB The Show 18 and Shadow of the Colossus have both been snubbed, it further puts things into perspective.

I find it mental that Shadow of the Colossus misses out completely. Shows what a great year it's been, I suppose, but it seems a shame for a game that good to not be recognised in any category.
@roe could it be because it's a remaster?
@Cutmastavictory maybe people see it that way but it's completely remade and holds up as well as if it were a brand new game
I'd much rather see new games being nominated rather than remasters.
Has anyone even finished Red Dead Redemption 2? It feels like it's barely been out before it got nominated.
@roe popularity my friend, Shadow of the Colossus is a masterpiece but like the other games made by GenDesign (team ICO) they're not as big as RDR2 and GoW
@DerMeister some people for sure have,according to all those youtube vids.
some people also buy a new game and beat the story in like 1 or 2 sittings,and leaving the rest for postgame content.
anyway,this is already a victory against rockstar and a clear sign that GOW and even spiderman are not to be dismissed as valid candidates for the main award by the hardcore red dead fans.
but even if red dead wins,sony will still be the biggest winner imo just because they have the most games that are nominated and might win some awards aswell.
@DerMeister I still haven't finished it but from what I've played so far it would get my vote in many of these categories.
Will xbox get an award for buying the most studios? It's bizarre that in buying (saving*) some of these studios overall games sales will likely drop as they'll almost definitely now only be producing exclusives, anyway, well done Sony.
I'm still only on chapter 3 but Red Dead is already my game of the year despite really strong competition. Unless it completely falls off a cliff with the rest of the story, it's pretty much a lock for me
Sony is on fire this gen, they always had great games in the previous gen, but this gen it seems people start to notice it too (with a couple of ps4 10M selling games)
@wiiware and most notably most of them being SP only games and still selling way more then multiplatform games that also have a online part.
gotta love this SP first mentality our exclusives have.
@roe while that's true, technically its different, but the story and such remains the same. Unless they made a category especially for remasters, then I'm not sure it would make sense to win an award. I love a terminator 2 remaster with new visuals, and such, but it comment win any awards.
@roe Because it wouldn't be fair. SOTC would literally win every single award
Game of the Year? Shadow of the Colossus
Best Sound Design? Shadow of the Colossus
Best Art Direction? Shadow of the Colossus
Best eSports Coach? Shadow of the Colossus
@Octane on a serious note, that esports coach award is kinda not needed.
so instead of having a esports coach award they could replace it with best remaster/remake.
also just remove that best content creator/youtuber award and replace it with something that actually matters.
@jdv95 Best eSports Moment... lol
I bet it's some kind of sponsored deal. No way Keighley came up with all of that on his own.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi God of war is the.g.o.a.t. playa.best PlayStation franchises ever word up son
@Octane yeah has to be.
so many needless esports categories,2 should be more then enough.
@roe I'm on chapter 4 and I've been assured that the story gets even better.
@jdv95 yep that's what Sony does best.single player is the best .just like the g.o.a.t Sony.been a fan of Sony since day 1 in September 9 1995.hint that's why I call myself PlayStation1995.if it wasn't for PlayStation video games will be dead by now.they are the reason why I still play video games.bern playing video games since 1981 with Atari.i l❤ve my sega genesis.my favorite console in the early 1990s.playstation is just a game changer.syphon filter was and still is my favorite ps1 games ever.word life.word to your mother.word up son
@jdv95 Why are you so disturbed about RDR2 potentially winning? There's only so much you can do with a realistic 1899 setting, yet Rockstar have managed to craft this masterpiece in this limited setting. Comparing it to fantasy settings like GOW isn't at all fair, since like Witcher and all fantasies, the developer has the freedom to put anything in there like "hey you need a mask to open this portal or destroy this 2-headed beast with goat legs etc" that goes a ways in making those games look more interesting. Try to acknowledge what RDR2 has achieved here and don't brush it off because it's mainstream. That backing the underdog thing is as old as history.
@jdv95 Yup, as console makers sony like to complement 3rd party rather than compete with them, I think that's smart.
@TheArt i am not disturbed by it winning at all,i also love the game.
it's just that so many people take that game as their winner just because it is a rockstar game and suddenly dissmissing the games they ones used to love so much and now declaring them as average just because of red dead.
and yes the realistic setting of red dead is to be praised but that should not be a factor for it winning over any fantasy game. afterall GOW revamped the entire gameplay aspect,while still making sure it feels like a god of war game and that is also to be praised.
i think both games have equal chance of winning and both games deserve it more then anything else this gen,but red dead is not this holy grail of gaming that so many people let out it to be (neither is GOW) and i just kinda get annoyed when people claim it is,while ignoring the flaws the game has that they would ohterwise point out in other games.
oh and on a sidenote,it's not about it being mainstream,afterall GOW is also a mainstream candidate,so is spiderman etc.
@wiiware it's the freedom they allow the devs that is their strenth.
also not chasing cheap trends such as showing MP into everything for a few more bucks,resulting in a great story and gameplay.
it's kinda of a funny mirror with the sony picture movies. the movies are ok at best most of the times,but the games sony publish and support are just sublime.
@TheArt
I'm not even sure what the award is for. RDR2 is untouchable for me and that's all that matters. I loved GOW but in a few years from now I know what 2018 will be remembered most for.
Is anyone voting even a good thing? I'm not sure. It's more about emotional impact than really rewarding what developers achieved
@jdv95
You have all the right to claim GOW as the holy grail of gaming, same way people can claim same for RDR2 but thing is...how many cowboy games with this level of detail are there? How many fantasy games have been released just this 2018 alone...Monster Hunter World, SOTC, Dragon Quest, GOW, Spiderman - all brilliant games, basically almost all games are in a fantasy setting. And RDR2 is just different, that's what makes it a big deal.
So Sony with 4 (or more) games making the nominations gets more than Rockstar with just 1 game - who would have seen that coming...
Its good that Sony's games have been recognised for their quality across more than 1 title. Most other publishers haven't released that many games - not that should be nominated in multiple categories. I notice that Ubisoft had a few with Far Cry and Assassin's Creed, Activision with Destiny and BO4 so its not really surprising that Sony had a few - especially as they also compete in VR categories too.
@JJ2 And that's the problem I have with linear games, it's hard to keep them when done. I loved TLOU and Uncharted4 but sold all of them after platinuming the latter and 75percenting the former, meanwhile I still have GTAV since 2013/14. It's the longevity.
God of War is the game of the year.
Hope the game wins more GOTY awards overall.
Its even more impressive that GoW is in with a realistic chance in so many categories.
While I have ground to a halt around two thirds of the way through RDR2, I replayed GoW a second time to go after a platinum and I can see me playing it again in the future.
GoW got my vote for each category it ran in, Bear McCreary's soundtrack is utterly epic and I think it looks and runs better than anything else I played this year (I was forced to turn off the broken HDR on Red Dead).
@TheArt
I see what you mean but I'm not sure that has to do with linearity. Look at Bloodborne, it's somehow linear but a game you keep forever
@BAMozzy
Sony would definitely get an award of best publisher. All the exclusives nominated are outstanding in their own category.
@JJ2 Again, got the platinum for Bloodborne, sold it lol. I'm still keeping Fallout 4, GTAV (physical copies), Witcher 3, Persona 5, Horizon, Skyrim(digitals -wouldn't sell if they were physical). Well Dishonored 2 + DotO are the only physical linear games I'm still keeping.
@JJ2 Don't disagree there - certainly not this year at least. I can't say all of Sony's games appeal or on the scale of something like RDR2 but regardless of whether they appeal or not, they are certainly well made and perform well from day 1. The production values are evident! I may be a bit critical of games like GoW and Spider-Man's structure - in that they wouldn't be too out of place on a PS3 apart from the visuals but they are also well made and polished. They look good, sound good, are well acted, well written too in general and play well too. Its that consistency that Sony deserves credit for - especially as a lot of games these day rely on post release patches to fix things and its also becoming more common to release half a game with the other half coming at a later date when they get round to it too.
@BAMozzy
Oh its not about appeal. Games can never please everyone. But the diversity of the nominated games appealing to different audience are nailed in their respective genres. Like I know not everyone likes QD type of games but the fans who appreciate the genre got an awesome game. Etc
@roe I agree tho to be fair. Such a massive release despite it being a remake of an older game. Really deserved some recognition. Masterpiece of a game.
@Lovespuds But I've Ditched GOW as it was too linear and not as open world as I thought. Ditched it for GTAO and Kingdom Come which I've enjoyed much more. Spiderman I've stopped playing after the first day. Rdr2 - can't stop on it, and planning a second go on it. So many people, so many tastes. Even FarCry 5 I've enjoyed more than Spiderman.
Sony was not kidding when they came out with the 'Greatness Awaits' . Well deserved.
only salty xbots will vote for rdr2
@BAMozzy Thats why i own a Playstation im not bond to one game. 😁
@TheArt I find Bethesda games. I dont know what it is....
GTA i really dont care for that game series somehow. 😁
RDR 1 was so boring to me and somehow i would rather have a remaster of Heavenly Sword then any Rockstar game ever made. 😃
That does not mean they are bad by any means.
God Of War should win but RDR2 will get GOTY because it almost always goes to a multi-platform game.
@Flaming_Kaiser just to one system instead...
Its exclusives that force me to buy both systems and I would love to see the day when you could buy one console and play any game. In other words Sony, Nintendo and MS are more like any other publishers. OK so they make Hardware too but you can choose to buy any console rather than 'forced' to buy to play the exclusives. I know that may not happen but I would love to pick the console based on other factors - best hardware, controller, price etc like I buy nearly all my other electronic equipment.
I do think though that may not be necessarily a good thing too as it may end up with yearly improvements - like mobiles, tablets, TV's, GPU's etc - as they all compete to have the 'best' system for the price. You may not buy Sony if MS or Nintendo have the best hardware that plays Sony published games the best so Sony would no doubt be making a better system to be competitive - of course MS and/or Nintendo would also make another system to keep the sales coming. It could become more like GPU's where every year you get a new, improved version.
As a Publisher, Sony seem great - they seem willing to give their Devs as much time as needed to finish their games, even happy to sit on finished games for a while to release at the 'best' time - Look at Days Gone which was delayed to avoid RDR2 and then delayed to avoid Metro and Anthem. As such, you get a game that is 'ready' for release and can be played without necessarily any patch - although you still get the odd patch to fix the small issues that may have slipped through the testing.
Personally, I think Sony has some of the best Studio's making games today. ND is one of the top developers and have been for a long time - the fact that everyone of their past 5 big releases (Lost Legacy is more a DLC to U4 that ended up being big enough to release as a standalone) has been a Game of the Year winner. Not many, if any, other studio's can claim that. Sony also seems happy to let Devs break out of franchises too - GG making H:ZD instead of another Killzone, SP making Ghost of Tsushima instead of Infamous - both successful franchises and relatively safe bets to sell but Sony seemed happy to let them both make something different. Activision seem to be making their Studio's work on CoD or Destiny with a few studio's not even getting the 'credit' - High Moon Studios for example that made Darkwatch, 3 Transformer games and Deadpool now just helping out on Destiny, same as Vicarious Visions but we all credit just Bungie, or just whichever studio is the lead for CoD that year - Treyarch, Infinity Ward or Sledgehammer. That's perhaps why Activision isn't releasing new games because all their studio's are focussed on those 2 franchises.
Well deserved. Fantastic year all around (just like last year). Always found something to play - and not time wasters - but good games I looked forward playing.
