The last major game release of 2018 is Just Cause 4, which launches on PS4 today. In terms of critical reception, it's doing fairly well for itself so far, amassing a metascore of 75 (for the PC release, anyway) and receiving praise for its new weather system and improvisational combat. We'll deliver our very own verdict soon, but in the meantime, here's how Rico's latest adventure has fared with other outlets.
TheSixthAxis - 8/10
Just Cause 4 is the best entry in the series to date, offering spectacular free-wheeling destruction on a scale that's not been attempted before. Rico remains one of gaming's most enjoyable protagonists, but more than ever before, it's really all about what he's capable of doing rather than the events unfolding around him.
IGN - 7.9/10
Just Cause 4 is a slightly better version of Just Cause 3's destruction-fueled action, but lacks a big new idea to give it an identity of its own.
Eurogamer - Recommended
Weather effects and party balloons see a knockabout charmer return in decent form.
Polygon - No Score
Solis is a huge island, which allows for a realistic distribution of targets, and environmental diversity. There's some pleasure to be had exploring its various environs of city, jungle, mountain and beach-fronts, making use of an almost infinite variety of vehicles.

Sounds decent. 😁
Just Cause games are always fun, maybe I will buy this month, but my backlog is big right now.
JC3 was worth the money as a PS+ freebie but was repetitive and had a highly forgettable story and main cast. It was admittedly good fun but not enough to make me fork out for this one.
I didn't finish JC3 although it was really fun until it wasn't anymore. Just causing mayhem is a lot of fun but when you're forced to do it over and over again to proceed with the story it kinda gets old. And the world was soooo big that it sort of worked against itself. Nice couple of hours and then I never touched it again unfortunately. Spend more time with Mad Max though which I assume has the exact same game engine.
@JoeBlogs @JoeBlogs "I hate this game. Even free is too much" 😂
I like the Just Cause games, but I will admit the formula is starting to get a little bit stale.
I'll get it in the future when it's on sale.
Just Cause 3 was honestly a step back from 2, with the map feeling far more sparse and it feeling a bit 'checklisty' by telling you what to destroy and where it is. I'm hoping this one is slightly more engaging.
Was going to grab this tonight but the comment about it looking rough on the pro worries me a bit.
@RogerRoger i got this yesterday and by god there needs to be a patch. The game play is fun but travelling at high speeds with the interlacing hurts my eyes
@RogerRoger
I feel you are grossly exaggerating, I am playing it on the base PS4 and it still looks quite nice and runs better than Just Cause 3.
@RogerRoger I knew this game would be a broken mess like 3 Avalanche just want to get it out the series ended at 2
I can’t wait to rock it out with Rico, I’m busy this week so I won’t be able to pick it up until late Friday.
Got my copy today, but haven't started it yet. Haven't touched Detroit yet either. Need to get through Horizon/Frozen Wilds on Ultra Hard first.
I picked up a copy of JC3 a few weeks ago on steam for about £3. Its been a right laugh playing with my elder sons, think we've had about 20 hours of fun with it so I no complaints. But he has a 2700X and 2080 so its able to power right thought any performance issue. Being more a tv / controller man myself I'll give it a good while to see if the PS4 Pro performance issues can be resolved before even giving it a look-in
@RogerRoger my mate has it on xbox and said it looks like arse on that too.
Sorry My new ps5 is way better than your cry baby ps4 garbage and .Your Just Cause 4 new game .
@RogerRoger I totally agree. I thought my game wasn't installed properly. The textures are shocking, no water effects, lighting flashes light and dark so I'm not sure if its day or night or both. Gameplay seems ok so far, I'm only about 2 hours in. But they've removed destructible chaos objects from villages, so what's the point of having hundreds of villages with nothing to do in them? It's a weird structure, I hope the game gets better and it gets patched soon.
@RogerRoger To the Foundry!
Why am I not surprised it's rating so low XD. Def waiting for bargain bin sale.
