According to multiple reports, Sony is currently sending out beta invites for the PlayStation 4's next firmware update. Firmware 6.50 is live for testers right now, but don't get too excited just yet. Invites read: "The 6.50 update does not include any new major consumer-facing features." In other words, more system stability, baby!
Having said that, we have heard from multiple sources that this firmware gives users the option of swapping the X and circle buttons. For those unaware, circle is generally used as the 'accept' button in Japan, whereas X is the 'cancel' button. Here in the West, the functionality has always been flipped. If the information's accurate, then that's at least an interesting addition.
Oh, and as for the whole username change thing, we honestly have no idea what's happened with that. Last we heard, it was still in beta, and now we're getting a new firmware. Either it's included in update 6.50, or Sony's just still not ready to unleash the option.
Did you happen to get a beta invite? Hit circle instead of X in the comments section below.

hey i might do that when playing FFXV, it will stop the "jump while trying to interact" issue as in Japan Circle was used for interaction not Cross like over here
if you've not been flummoxed by hitting X instead of O on the Metal Gear Solid 2 menu screen, are you even a gamer?
The P.S. of that email may as well be: 'Don't expect any major new features from now on ever on the PS4, as it will soon become our legacy platform. New features will be available on PlayStation 5, so pony up if you want the new stuff.'
Love evermore,
Sony
Christ on a bike, how unstable was the system before all these updates???
I think the FW is focused on PS5. And just keeping PS4 going on basic updates.
@stupidget Jah is a mountain biker now?
Had my name change when the beta came in thankfully, so even if it is scrapped I'm happy with it
at this point i expect the name change to be a ps5 launch feature.
either that or it will come just a couple months before the ps5 comes out.
"more system stability", swaping X and O... They are copying Nintendo aren't they?
Next thing you know they'll change the buttons to ABXY, name the next controller to PS5 Pro controller, call the console PlaySta5witch, add 2 shoulder straps, a car battery and call it hybrid (but only for VR games)
Checks email for firmware beta invite
Is that different from the controller remapping implemented a while back?
Also I havent seen any update called stability for years. While I understand it was funny joke back then, now its just misinformation.
@Quintumply Only here for the gif. 😁
then what is the point in the beta if it doesn't do anything? i don't understand it at all.
Finally, changing X and O button is a god send for me, there's nothing more annoying than pressing x for confirm on psvita/psp game, but pressing o for confirm on ps4 with the same game. That's drive me nuts on psp/ps3 era since I usually have playstation system with different origin country (sometimes japan/asia, sometimes usa).
The name change beta has been over since well before Christmas.
Got mine changed but the feature is now gone.
There are some games where button swapping will come in handy! @FullbringIchigo OMG YES!!! That is one of the games that will benefit most from the button-swapping feature!
Got an invite but not sure if I'll download. The only thing scarier than being chased by Mr X in Resident Evil 2 is a system crash before you get to save your game at a typewriter.
"option of swapping the X and circle buttons. For those unaware, circle is generally used as the 'accept' button in Japan, whereas X is the 'cancel' button." YES
"Here in the West, the functionality has always been flipped." hasn't always been flipped. in the PS1 era it was like in Japan.
@Rhaoulos 😬
Strange... they don't usually send beta test invites for non-major firmware updates. 🤔
The way Sammy says 'beta' is absolutely dreadful
"Please keep in mind that information regarding this System Software Update is confidential and by consenting to the System Software Beta Agreement, you agree not to disclose information regarding the content technologies."
I received an invite, but by the time I went to redeem my voucher, the limit of participants has been reached already.
