Xbox One console exclusive Cuphead is no longer a console exclusive, as it will launch on the Nintendo Switch on 18th April. But as Microsoft and the Big N become increasingly pally, it means that the PlayStation 4 looks set to miss out, as there’s no word on a port to Sony’s system. Apparently the Switch version will later be updated with Xbox Live support, so we suspect this may have played a part in the title’s destination.
Rumour has it that Microsoft and Nintendo will be collaborating even harder as the year trucks along, with Ori and the Will of the Wisps also rumoured to be joining the Switch’s catalogue later this year. Two titans against a common foe? Certainly feels that way at the moment, doesn’t it?

The industry has lost its mind these past few weeks.
@get2sammyb You have to admit it's interesting though. Who would have thought five years ago Nintendo and MS would join forces
it does look as though the two of them have decided that the only way to stop being hammered every month in worldwide sales is to join forces and try and derail the ps4. it also has a whiff of desperation and saltiness from MS, imo. they've got the most powerful console yet it's done nothing to reverse its fortunes. monthly sales are still 2.5-3 times in sony's favour.
And Just a friendly reminder guys and a warning as well. Yes this is a PlayStation site but any trolling or flaming of other consoles companies etc will be on the receiving end of the banhammer. I am tired of how toxic this community has become of late. Let's just remember to keep the discussions friendly and respectful for all.
Thanks for Understanding
@Tasuki So Think we will see a nintendo Game on Xbox?
Not really my cup of tea either way ☕
Too bad for those that really wanted this, it's a cool little game
This is an awesome game and one of my best achievements in gaming was beating this. This is great news for Switch owners and as an owner of all 3 consoles I'm more than happy to see a few more games not be exclusive anymore.
I mean, it's already on PC so people that own a PS4 as their one console can play it on a PC.
I said on another thread. This is potentially a huge deal. Its going to be fascinating to see how this collaboration plays out. Presumably nintendo have to give something as part of this deal too. And while we wont be seeing mario, zelda or pokemon on an xbox - there will be more to this
@Tasuki It's interesting, it's just all over the place.
@Tasuki not unless i ban you first
That's a shame. Cuphead is really good.
I’m more interested in Rare games like Banjo being back on Nintendo. Also, i’m surprised Nintendo allowed MS to invade the Switch with it’s achievement system. I thought they were against that kind of thing.
Seems counterintuitive. The argument for consoles is to have a PlayStation and Switch to get the best exclusives. Now having that pairing gets you some Xbox exclusives as well. This just makes an Xbox even less relevant.
I'd certainly have bought this. It's the only xBone 'exclusive' that's piqued my interest. But not going to go buy a switch or xBone to get it.
@Tasuki That's odd. I rarely see anyone trashing the other consoles here. NL is nothing but Sony bashing. Weird warning. I can have normal conversations here without being called a fanboy.
Honestly I don’t give a darn about Nintendo and Microsoft joining forces. For me personally, I find most games that fit my taste still on PS4. I’m more worried that Sony seems to plan a similar thing like Microsoft with the recent announcement of Detroit coming to PCs. That’s not an exclusive anymore.
why even bother in buying exclusives studio's if your games will not only be on xbox and on pc,but now on switch aswell?
everybody praises MS for making a comback next gen but it's for sure not for the benefit of xbox.
kinda insane that they are planning multible xbox consoles for next gen,but are always getting rid of reasons to buy them.
and if they want to get away from the console market as some claim,then why even bother making multible xbox consoles for next gen?
It's interesting times, it'll be fun to see what happens next. Sony has been doing rather well lately, so stronger competitors could be a good thing.
Cuphead has been near the top of my Steam wishlist for a while now, I might grab it in the next sale. It seems like a very fun game.
Start putting Nintendo games on X-box and you will have my attention.
I'm not sure cuphead not coming to PS4 is a PlayStation news tbh.
Console companies are losing the plot, they need exclusives, putting them on other platforms is just stupid. Guess im heading to pc eventually.
before we start drawing comparisons with sony and detroit remember that this was because quantic went multiplat.
heck this could have been very much against sony's wishes but maybe they had no better alternative than allowing it to go to pc.
MS does this willingly and with all their exclusives.
let's just wait untill we know more about the quantic situation before saying that sony is losing it aswell.
This is all just a storm in a teacup. Nice announcement trailer though
@jdv95 I hear ya, its not exaclty the same but its not looking good if you heard laydens recent comments. I will just be keeping a close on the future, it will be a sad day when i go full pc.
@Gamer4Lyfe what did he say?
i don't think i heard his thoughts on this yet.
Just a matter of time when Rare Replay comes to Switch. Honestly, the only game on the Xbox to play is KI. I know that game is on PC as well but I ain’t really a PC person. I don’t see Nintendo games jumping on Xbox though.
Shame, I would have been interested in giving it a go, very interesting art style. Oh well nevermind, they have to try and do what they think is best for them.
@shonenjump86 I don't think we will see Rare Replay on Switch, PC or anywhere else since it has build in the disk the inhouse 360 emulator for the xbox one.
@Tasuki yeah come on you were ripping on the Google console earlier naughty!
@belmont I kinda forgot about that part.
It's funny how when Sony didn't play ball with cross play with other consoles people flipped their lid. Now MS are putting their games on Switch but are deliberately leaving out PlayStation that's fine.
@leucocyte lol, speaking of salty
@NintenGuy Right? You see more venomous comments in Nintendo Life, but they have no morals there, so it's expected.
I quite like what Microsoft are doing. Nintendo has a market that isn't just the traditional "what fps is it?" Gamer they used to target, so their games will suddenly gain a new audience... Whether that audience will be receptive is yet to be seen.
Xbox live as a multiplatform service feels more like an attempt to derail Google and Amazon's streaming launches than an attack on Sony. As someone who's never owned a Microsoft console, I'd be tempted by Xbox as a service over someone new.
I'd love Sony to join in, get PS Now on Switch!
I wonder if PlayStation has any plans to change their core values and become more willing to cooperate, other than just necessary.
It sounds to me game companies don't have rivalry now. Microsoft is changing their services to be fully multiplaform (as Phil said he want Xbox Live in both Switch AND PS4, I kid you not) and streaming.
Nintendo is focused in bringing classics exclusives whilst having a major appeal to the general market.
What is Playstation doing? They said more couch co-op and less AAA titles per year—that doesn't sound like a plan to me.
Google will be directly competing with Microsoft (again, MS doesn't catch a break lol), Steam is competing with Epic Games. Nintendo is chilling and I don't know what Playstation is doing.
What I found more interesting was how it was presented, "with the support of our friends Microsoft" or similar. If Cuphead was announced without any mention of MS I would have taken it a simple game announcement but know I expect this to be the start of a deeper partnership. The whole market is going to go through a real shake up over then next couple of years and making friends / allies seems to be a smart move.
Nintendo and Microsoft have collabed in the past before, so I'm not too terribly shocked.
Interesting times are coming. I am curious to see what moves Sony will be making in the coming year or so.
Good game, and good on it being made available to more people. I still think the biggest shock of the day is Nintendo lending out Zelda to an indie studio though. It's...just surreal. All of this is surreal. I'm going into a bunker with my PS4 and Switch.
You got most all, but you can't have all the greats Sony, and that's ok.
I wouldn't interpret to much into this partnership. There's no coalition against Sony.
@Callmegil Sony decided they would make less exclusives so they can put more resources into their quality. I think their plan with PS5 is to keep the status quo while dipping they toe in certain markets like with PS Now.
Let's not forget that John Kodera stepped away from the CEO position so he can focus on the network and service side of things. That might be one of the reasons.
Ideally I wanted to see Nintendo games on PS, however this puts a big damper on that happening.
However this collab potentially could see a real re-release of Goldeneye? Not sure if there are other owners to the Goldeneye64 IP...
@BarFooToo They also called Double Fine Productions their friends. I'm sure it's just a respectful way to address to other companies. When Reggie released his retirement statement, Shawn Layden said "from your friends at Playstation". Yesterday when Google was talking about Stadia, they showed a Pac-Man inspired Style filter and followed along with the lines "This is from an old friend" [supposedly Namco or Atari].
Sounds like it's a formal way of speaking.
@Mikethemosher I'd like to see your try.
@callmegil @barfootoo I'd understand that if they'd said "our friends at StudioMDHR" but this seems like a bigger deal, even if it's just "traditional" console companies declaring their friendship as a line in the sand to the new guys. Nobody wants to be 1998-2002 Sega here
@RedMageLanakyn Next time I suggest you leave the insults out. Quite honestly I am getting tired of the personal insults, you got some kind of problem with methat's fine but this is not the place to discuss it. If you don't like how a do things here you can always find somewhere else to go
Xbox: "Here's Cuphead. Can we have Breath of the Wild?"
@eltomo why do you think that puts a damper on that possibility
Good thing I'm saving for a Switch. Don't really approve of leaving PS4 out when it can run the game. Either go multiconsole, or don't.
@Tasuki Removing comments now eh? Did I strike a nerve? You really need to relax. Also, if you can find somewhere where I made an actual personal insult, I suggest you pull it from my deleted comment and show me. If you can't take the occasional sarcastic remark from random internet person, maybe you are the one that needs to take a look in the mirror and move on somewhere else. If anyone has developed a "toxic" or hostile attitude around here, it's definitely you.
This is good for Nintendo maybe Microsoft too in some way but for the Xbone brand no way in hell they might as well go third party now
I can totally see the benefit of this marriage for Nintendo. Less so for Xbox. By putting your library on Switch you now have the least attractive platform to play on overall. At least in the majorities eyes. I mean there is a reason Switch is at or beyond Xbox by most estimates and PS is so far in front it is laughable this gen. Why have an Xbox? BC just isnt enough imo at all
All this doesn't matter until I see a mario or zelda on an xbox. All sony needs to do is keep doing what they've been doing. Exclusives rule the nation.
Detroit on pc and cuphead on switch, no exlusives is sacred anymore lol.
Oh well, already have this on steam but I'll buy it again on switch since I like playing games on console more than on pc
@Callmegil I Agree with you companies should work together just like Microsoft putting cuphead on Switch, I also wanna see Nintendo games on my PS4, meanwhile Sony can focus on amazing single player games like God of War
@AdamNovice Because they never cared in the first place that just wanted to make sony look bad
@get2sammyb "The industry has lost its mind these past few weeks."
We'll it's a good thing the rest of the world has been so stable. 😉
@Gamer4Lyfe Same here, if Sony keeps releasing their games on PC, I will also move to PC as well. Funny that Sony really wants us to buy a PC, what a day.
@wiiware "Detroit on pc and cuphead on switch, no exlusives is sacred anymore"
I know you lol'd that, but really, people are getting a bit carried away over Cuphead, a 2D Platformer, going to Switch. This isn't Halo, Forza or Gears of War, it's Cuphead. People aren't lining up in droves to buy a $400 X1X for Cuphead, it's no great loss to Xbox. What it is is a way for MS to expand MS Live and achievements to Nintendo gamers. Just like when Nintendo put Mario, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem on mobile. Cuphead is MS mobile game and Swit h is their mobile platform. MS has never sold a gami g handheld. What MS has sold is Minecraft on Switch, with Cross-play if you get an Xbox live account on your system.
And Nintendo may even reciprocate, with Sushi Striker on Xbox. Not Zelda or Mario, Sushi Striker, a Nintendo game.
I am really hoping Switch gets Ori 2. If it's the same date and not a year old port I'll be a little more impressed. It's still just a 2D platform game though.
@Areus The plan here seems to be Xbox pushing Xbox Live and it's total potential userbase.
Think about it, via XCloud and XBL, you won't be starting a new console cycle from 0 users. Imagine if the Xbox One became a streaming device for Xbox Scarlett titles, just so developers didn't have to think about how many sales they could get. It's the same ploy Google is using.
On Nintendo's end, they get more games. Just flat out a win for them. And since the Xbox is a completely different and complementary beast to their vision, they have no issue with Live, since all it is...is achievements and user date. No fees imposed on their users.
Microsoft gets more users to flaunt as engaging with the Xbox brand, the ultimate end goal. They will still be producing hardware, but that will be one avenue of growing their network of gaming users across devices.
@PS_Nation I believe the Quantic Dream games going to the Epic games store is a special case I don't think sony wants to make a habit of bringing all of there games to pc
@Tasuki
Did you just say we will be banned for saying bad things about a company? Does this reflect the attitude of Pushsquare or just your personal globalist brand of censorship? That's really horrible!
Glad I have a Switch then.
@Powerpellet No, I did not say that. I said you will be banned if you purposely troll or look to start trouble by going against the grain. And yes it reflects all.of Push Square as per the community rules, which you agree by when you creating an account here
As per community rules
Do not "troll" or "bait" other users; Posts that purposefully or systematically go against the grain to trigger a reaction from others are prohibited. You are entitled to an opinion, but purposefully disrupting discussions with unpopular opinions to create arguments is not allowed, we simply suggest you don't get involved in these conversations. Users that are seen to be continuously trolling or baiting will be banned.
My pocket is running out of money, but will still it for Switch.
@tasuki
Dont go against the grain. Got it. Unpopular opinions not allowed. Got it. And dont converse with those who have differing opinions. How do I know if my opinion is unpopular will you tell me or just ban me? Im thinking this isnt a site for me anymore.
@Powerpellet You're not getting it.
I didn't say unpopular opinions are not allowed I said purposely trolling isn't. I suggest maybe learning the difference between the two before jumping to conclusions.
This is not about being Pals, Microsoft wants to boost software sales. It lost a lot of its bargaining power in its current position.
This game is perfect for a handheld, although it's gonna be tough as boots. It's hard enough playing with a good controller and big screen.
Microsoft has abandoned their console, Now they just want to sell more copies.
Unless Nintendo brings their game to the Xbox or PC, of course this won’t happen. This is the real big thing.
Cuphead? meh
@Gamer4Lyfe
PlayStation Italy said again this week that exclusive content is the way to go.
@Powerpellet
I agree. A lot of people trolling PlayStation might be banned here.
No seriously what is trolling nowadays? It's not about trolling companies. It's about trolling people imo. There's absolutely nothing wrong in not liking a company. That's a consumer attitude. I 100% prefer honesty than hypocrisy. It's when it's meant to annoy people even on cover of jokes, and most of all personal attack are wrong. There's always a blurred line obviously.
Everyone wins in this case.
If you can afford it:
Xbox for multiplats and superior build quality.
PS for exclusives. These are hitting godlike levels.
Nintendo for exclusives. Godly exclusives + portability.
At least that is how I see it at the moment.
@Areus I don’t think we’ll see any Nintendo games on Xbox. I feel MS’s strategy is just to make Xbox a service and spread across as many platforms as possible. Just like Stadia.
This is them at the beginning of that process imo.
Anyway looking forward to picking cuphead up on switch. Is one of only 3 games I’ve liked the look of on Xbox this gen (others being Ori and Forza).
I like it. Mainly because it now means I can play Cuphead since I've skipped Xbox this gen, and also because this kind of teaming up of Nintendo and Microsoft against Sony makes things way more interesting. Neither of them can compete with Sony on their own, so a joint effort will hopefully keep Sony on their toes.
@get2sammyb “Two titans against a common foe“ or two companies working together to benefit gamers (and their bank balances) while one stubbornly refuses to take part?
@leucocyte yep, I think MS would join with Apple if it meant they could get back something they have realized even nextgen will be hard so saying we are with Nintendo in the hopes die hard Nintendo fans will buy an Xbox console from them to look like they have sold more.
The truth is XB1 is not a direct competitor to Nintendo. If you want to play high def shooters you own an XB1, if you want to play more quirky family friendly stuff that isn't so bothered with 4K but works as a handheld then you get a Switch. I think most people would agree Cuphead will sell better to the Nintendo audience so it being on the Switch helps the developer.
As for PS4, it's that middle console that's competing for both markets, so it's unsurprising that relations aren't so friendly.
Exactly. And because of that, I still prefer my PS4 over Xbox One and Switch, because of the sheer variety of games. Nintendo and Microsoft can be buddy buddy as long as they want - they are still not impressing me to change platforms. Even as a anime fan I also find Sony’s censor policies to still be acceptable enough. Simply the best platform for me. Vita + PS4 and I’m a happy gamer. Call me a fanboy, I’ll proudly accept that.
@Tasuki watch me
@Derpie1 I see X1 as PS4's main competitor, they offer the same, but we'd agree that PS4 is better. I cant see Nintendo doing any joint venture with Sony now. At least not for a long time.
This is just the begining of Nintensoft or Mircotendo.
It really seems like Microsoft is moving away from trying to compete with a traditional console and instead what the push their brand outward to as many devices as possible. They might still make another Xbox but if they continue their recent moves, it seems like their own console will be of secondary importance within their own plans.
It's really not that strange, outside of the Xbox, Microsoft is more well known for producing software, not hardware. Maybe they want to transition back to where they've enjoyed the most success.
@eltomo I think Nintendo would be very stingy putting thier games on either platform... at best if I were to guess you may get access to NES/SNES games but anything beyond is unrealistic...
Nintendo’s end prob is like allowing this stuff to happen & well 70% of the revenue... it’s cheap it’s minimalistic but the partnering corporations still make 💰 out of it & at the end of the day that’s the bottom line for these corporations...
@eltomo @Lando_
In terms of games yes PS4 is superior to Xbox but in terms of hardware quality PS as at the bottom. It is true that the exclusives make or brake a console. But Sony should also commit to the quality of their console. I am talking about the PS4 Pro perfect games but loud hardware, coil whine etc.
@NintendoFan4Lyf "I am sorry to see that Cuphead won't be hitting PS4, but I do understand Microsoft's perspective here."
"Plus, Sony is not allowing Xbox Live integration (even on a per-title basis) on it's platform."
Not that these 2 are mutually exclusive, but if somebody asked me why Cuphead isn't on PS4 - don't know why anybody would ask me that, I have no idea - but my answer would be that Sony wouldn't let it b/c they don't want people to have an Xbox Live account on their PS4, not b/c MS didn't offer. That's what happened with Minecraft. Maybe non-Nintnedo gamers dont' realize this, but Xbox Live is ALREADY on Switch. If you want to cross-play your Switch version of Minecraft w/ Xbox owners you need to do it via an Xbox Live account. So for me Cuphead isn't the trendsetter, it's following in the footsteps of Minecraft, which is MS owned.
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/04/playing_minecraft_on_nintendo_switch_will_soon_net_you_xbox_live_achievements
As for Nintnedo games on Xbox, I think I would be a little miffed at this point if Bayonetta 3 came to Xbox, it would look SO MUCH BETTER on Xbox 2 Scarlett in 4k than on Switch. Not that Bayonetta looks bad on Switch, heck I own 1 and 2 on Wii U and they look fine, but they would almost certainly look better on Xbox 2. Give Xbox some Nintneod exclusives like PullMo, Pushmo and Rusty's Real Deal Baseball. Nintenod makes plenty of games nobody cares about. I wonder how many Xbox owners would want to buy Labo?
I think its true that games sell consoles, that makes sense to me, whereas having an attachment to a brand doesn't.
Cuphead, the art interested me, but I was never really a fan of boss-rush style 2D platformers, its not a game that would contribute to me wanting to own a Switch / Xbox one.
I seem to be playing games on the Xbox 360 mostly at the moment, along with the PS4, as recently picked one up cheap...
Oh sweet! This is one of the few games that was tempting me to get a Xbox. If Rare replay comes over, I would have no desire to get one.
@NintendoFan4Lyf That part about ME not wanting Bayonetta 3 on Xbox, was really just about ME. Id' prefer something like Sushi Striker in return for Cuphead. I suppose I'd be willing to trade Bayonetta 3 for Ori 2 b/c I really want Ori 2, but again, I wouldn't want to read all of the negative comparisons if Bayonetta 3 was on Xbox 2 and Switch at the same time. But if it's an either or proposition, Ori 2 for Bayonetta 3 or no Ori 2 at all on Switch, sure, I'd reluctantly make that deal.
Though admitted I'm also still upset that the Final Fantasy main game series expanded to Xbox. That announcement was 1 of the biggest E3 shockers to me, bigger than FF7 remake or Shenmue 3, just b/c, even though FF had been on other consoles before, I just couldn't imagine it on an Xbox, i'ts just such a JRPG. Well at least it used to be back w/ 9, 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 15 nto so much. I have almost zero knowledge of 14.
But that was really the only exclusive series I ever cared about not being exclusive any longer. And at this point even if Zelda and Mario appeared on Xbox 2, while I would be shocked, it wouldn't have as much of an impact, nor be the end of the world. The times they are a changin'.
Pretty sure this isn't PlayStation news
I have never expected this game to release on ps4, so I can't be disappointed.
cuphead is far and away my favourite indi game of the past 10 years... maybe it is my favourite indi game ever now that i think about it. i would kill for a retail disc on ps4, but it is never happening. pc it is then... unless one day i do pick up a switch. retail copies could be in low supply for this one but one thing frightens me — this is the switch we are talking about right? does that mean cuphead will release as a full priced game? lol... nintendo tax for the win.
@3MonthBeef
2-3 games...Isn’t that a years worth of exclusives for Xbox?
@get2sammyb I think it would be helpful to have an article after each one of these nindie presentations to highlight what was shown and if they are also coming to Playstation (or what you think the chances are)sooner or later.
I have all 3 consoles, but the order that I will buy multi-platform games is PS4, Xbox, then Switch. I prefer PS4 for trophies and more storage space than the Switch has.
Anyway, just my suggestion.
@RevengeFan Well we've tried to cover the games individually, but good idea — I hear you!
@Callmegil
“Google will be directly competing with Microsoft (again, MS doesn't catch a break lol), Steam is competing with Epic Games. Nintendo is chilling and I don't know what Playstation is doing.”
dude I love this paragraph, really 😄
@Lando_ I think the only reason it's coming to PC(Detroit) is because it was developed by a second party. So the move to PC makes sense and QD is also going multiplatform from this point on. Other first party developed games such as HZD, Last of US, or Uncharted aren't likely to make the jump. Plus the games weren't system sellers as the ones I listed, so it's not hurting Sony in the least.
