This. Is. Surreal. Ys Net has finally released a full-length trailer for the long-awaited Shenmue III, and after almost two decades of waiting, it looks like an actual video game. In the clip we see Ryo and Shenhua investigating the Chinese village of Bailu and its various unsavoury characters. There are high points and low points production-wise, but it’s finally coming together.
This will prove a watershed moment for fans of the franchise, as the eternal wait for this game has dominated many of our adult lives. To be honest, this author still can’t quite believe it’s real.

It looks awesome. I'm hyped.
It looks janky as all heck and yet still somehow miles better than Jump Force.
it still looks stiff and janky though
(that reminds me i need to finish up the older games)
Excited for it. Can’t wait!
They were never going to have the budget to do much better than this. It’s meeting my expectations now.
The big guy who opens the door looks a bit nightmarish, and there's a distinct lack of forklift trucks, but other than that it's a winner.
Never played these games back in the day so hope this’ll be accessible as my first game...?
Well...
It definitely looks like an HD version of a Sega Dreamcast game XD
That's kind of charming tbh. True to form.
@get2sammyb
I’ve got the first two on PS4. But I never quite got round to the second one.
I’ll get a PS4 key launch whether I’m ready or not as I back the Kickstarter.
@get2sammyb agreed. Totally meets my expectations and more. Heck I'd take the original graphical quality over nothing at all.
I loved Shenmue on the Dreamcast and lost myself playing through both on the PS4 last year. Fully plan on replaying again near Shenmue 3 release date as a refresher. I just love being in that world.
@Azikira All I ever wanted from the graphics of this game,is for it to look slightly better than the 1 and 2 remasters. It has achieved that and then some. As for gameplay, the verdict is still out, as the trailer showed very little.
I hate those overexaggerated gasps of shock from characters in most JRPGs. The VA's must get told to breathe really heavy dead close to the mic.
I have the collection on PC but lasted about half an hour of wandering around being completely confused before I turned it off. I'll go back and give them another go but I really had no clue what I was doing.
This trailer marks an exciting time to be a Shenmue fan.
Dang... That looks amazing as fudge!
I think it looks AMAZING and am so glad they haven't gone for photo realism as the stylised look is so much more interesting and will endure.
As for it seeming janky (a hideous little word which needs to die) - I disagree as I think they are looking to replicate the feel of the old games and that makes me very happy indeed.
@hi_drnick I agree. This game was made for fans of the original 2 imo. Its looks really good keeping true to the shenmu style of old. Completed the first back in the day then platinum'd both when the HD port hit ps4. Great games.
@get2sammyb "And that's mind blowing"
What actually is mind blowing is that I watched the first minute or so of the video thinking they were showing scenes from the earlier games before they moved onto the new material. I've only ever played the first game on the Dreamcast but it looks just like it. That's impressive 20 years later they can make a game look like that.
It hurts my eyes and makes me not want to play it, as I really didn't care too much for the first game, but they nailed it, gotta give'em props for that. I kinda wish the 6 new Star Wars movies looked like the first 3 that much for posterity's sake. Going from 3 to 4 is just too jarring.
I still can't believe I've never played any of these games. Really need to get around to Shenmue I + 2.
I've never played Shenmue, so I've been very on the fence about III. I love the atmosphere of the trailer though. Something very soothing about it.
@Dodoo You are best off buying the Shenmue hd collection on ps4 this is the third game in the series I still need to finish the second lol but its better if you play those first as the story Is not stand alone.
Now at least it looks like a crappy PS3 game instead of a PS2 game.
Not for me. Happy for those that have been waiting tho.
I hope I can get hyped for it. I played and beat 1 and 2 on my he Dreamcast many many years ago. I was around 16. Those games were amazing at that time but I don’t know if I could get back into the series now. I somewhat remember the stories and since that time my taste in games has changed.
It looks much better than previous showings. Good for them
I'm currently playing through 1 on the HD Double Pack and loving it. Need to get a move on and finish them both, so I can play this as soon as it launches!
I love Shenmue. I don’t mind what the graphics are as long as it has the “soul” of Shenmue.
To me the graphics are true to the style they have in the previous games. And that is what I wanted personally.
Some won’t even touch this game because of its looks, but that is fine. This game is not trying to appeal to the Call of Duty fans or graphics w***** of the world. It is trying to appeal to its core audience.
A game with emotion and heart that captivates us with its unique world, gameplay, music, characters and story. I love it.
Looks very nice, ready to get sweaty.
I still think a Summer release ain’t as exciting as a Late Fall or Early Winter release ...Shenmue 3 will be a game for the fans who have been dreaming of it since 2001 and onwards ... Will always be a Cult-Classic in millions of gamers eyes ..
I feel sorry for those who will never “want” to play it ...
@nessisonett yeah that's pretty much a Shenmue game
Looking more like Shenmue, but what's up with the nightmarish NPC's?!
I haven't played the first two, but that this is real makes me dream about Mega Man Legends 3.
Looking great as far as I'm concerned, way better than the early test footage! I was hoping for basically a polished version fo the Dreamcast graphics and that's pretty much what we're getting, but with much nicer environments. It was never going to look like Yakuza.
@Tsurii @get2sammyb absolutely agree! This comment section is still very accommodating in comparison to many others. I don't get the schadenfreude for this game. It's not like shenmue is one of these obnoxious or omnipresent franchises (from ea, blizzard, Bethesda, Ubisoft, etc.) that get way more media coverage than they deserve. Yu Suzuki and his team aren't using any shady business practices (microtransactions, pay2win,...). They're just trying to finish this passion project with the means that they have. I'll never understand why there are "gamers" so commited to beat on an industry underdog!?
