God of War rounded out its impressive trophy haul by sweeping the BAFTAs, securing an eye-watering five awards on the evening. Sony Santa Monica’s epic PlayStation 4 exclusive scored for Best Music, Best Narrative, and Audio Achievement. Meanwhile, voice actor Jeremy Davies took home the Best Performer trophy for his role as the Stranger, while Kratos naturally walked away with the coveted Best Game gong. Red Dead Redemption 2 went home empty handed on the night.
Elsewhere, indie title Yoku’s Island Express won Best Debut, while Fortnite won the Evolving Game award. Sadly there was no love for Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which was beaten by Nintendo Labo for Game Innovation. The full list of winners is included below:

Astrobot was robbed. That game is doing things that i previously never dreamed possible when i started gaming.
Rockstar have to be disappointed with the reception to RDR2. I hope it doesnt discourage them from making a third at some point, as it remains a wonderful game. But God of War deserves all of its plaudits. Such an unforgettable experience
What have these award events got against Red Dead? It's a gawd dayum disgrace.
BOI We are running out of room for all of these trophys
@shogunRok Because Kratos went all Thanos on everyone and said "fine! I'll do it myself".
Red Dead Redemption 2 is incredible. Can only think it’s fallen into the same situation as Horizon, where it was nominated for everything but actually won very little. 🤦♂️
TRASH. Is it some beef among British people.
God of Awards is easily the best game last year, also the best game of the generation.
Can't comment on GOW yet but i do feel RDR2 has been hard done by. Also, gutted Astrobot didn't win anything.
Evolving game for me would be No Man's Sky.
best game to PlayStation best franchises ever.hail to 👑 king kratos word up son
I’m sad for Rockstar given they’re one of the few companies actually from Scotland, although much of RDR2 would have been done in the States. It would have been nice to celebrate homegrown talent in the way that the BAFTA TV and Film awards do.
God of war is a classic game
@ShogunRok Too bad there wasn't an award for most realistic horse testicles.
Well deserved, God of War easily the game of the generation. Red Dead 2 was the first game ever to put me literally to sleep, plus the outdated and janky controls made it one of the most overhyped games this gen for me, story was generic as they come.
GOW was fantastic but the story is overrated. In the first chapter you already know how it's going to end.
@nessisonett
Oh don't be sad for R*. More like be sad for these award events haha
I'm sure Forza is a brilliant racing game but better than rd2 for best British game?! Get out of it!! I haven't played God of war yet so can't wait to see how good it is, to be a better story than rd2 it will have to go some. Arthur Morgan has to be my favourite video game character ever, amazing voice acting!!
Pft...
@MrBlueMario - Glad it's not just me, while Rockstar create some amazing game worlds and characters they have never made a game that controls anywhere even close to adequate.
Interesting to see all the comparisons with RDR2. Gave it a try a few months ago though and have to say I'd take GOW over it any day of the week. RDR is one of those games I really want to love but just leaves me cold, while GOW exceeded every expectation I had, and I'm not a big fan of the franchise at all.
@nessisonett That's what I was trying to imply. Is it a case of some BAFTA heads disliking R* for being Scottish but representing too much America or what...
How's a game with 5 characters and a basic story winning best narrative. Now I'm starting to sound like I hate GOW which isn't so, but this is getting ridiculous.
Some very worthy winners here, and God of War is amazing, but Red Dead 2 deserved more recognition without a doubt.
Red dead redemption 2 is extremely dull. The wanted mechanic is a broken mess.
Now God of War has 197 GOTY awards, not including sites related to PlayStation.
@Cpt_Price It's a 19th century simulator, the main mission design is as linear as The Order 1886, the wanted mechanic is broken and the online multiplayer is a horrific example of exploitation through absurd 'micro*transactions'
@ShogunRok I guess nothing GOW is just better. 😜
@TheArt Do you need a big cast for a good narritive i dont think so. If i look at your avatar i can also say are you really objective. 😁 😃 😜
I haven’t played GoW yet, (🤔maybe I should get on that) so it’s hard to be objective, but RDR2 is the most impressive technical achievement that I’ve seen in gaming to this point. The narrative is admittedly a slow-burn, but good grief it is fantastic. I still ponder the themes presented in it. And the voice acting is phenomenal. It suffers from pacing issues and so too many people just never finished it, or never experienced all the side content if they rushed through.
So it’s too bad that such an achievement in gaming is lacking the accolades. I agree with Sammy that it is akin to Horizon Zero Dawn last year in that it just ran up against stiff competition and the unfortunate zeitgeist of the year.
@Flaming_Kaiser Lol and I know you hate Rockstar's games so there's no point in arguing.
Glad I'm not the only one who can't be bothered with cowboy nonsense.
Mind you, I'm not really feeling God of War at the moment either, but it's early days.
@TheArt That is not true i loved Vice City and Manhunt. 😁
@ShogunRok Mrs Brown's Boys has won several BAFTAs.
Just an observation.
@Gremio108 A fair point.
Some people here didn’t even play both and still try to argue which one is better, lmao.
It’s also a fact that some here really hates anything released by Sony. At least try to
not be so obvious ffs.
"Do not be sorry, be better" God of War gets my vote for narrative on that quote alone.
Why don’t they have a best VR category? Astro Bot would almost certainly have won that.
Sad for the event didnt acknowledge the greatness of rdr2 technical difficulty to reach high accomplishment in terms of video game media on graphics, story, narrative, music, art direction and gameplay.. Well in my opinion guess R* doesnt need an award to proof their the champion on the sandbox genre. R* is the people's champion
I love all the people defending RDR2. That game is fine. Decent story, good characters, and it absolutely pushes technological boundaries. It's also really boring, and it doesn't control very well, and the mission structure is terrible. Also it was made with borderline slave labor, so, you know... that game can bite me. People will give Rockstar games a 10 by default because they made GTA 3.
@Flaming_Kaiser I really don’t understand this argument about “five characters only”. First of all, it’s absolute false, that’s why I really doubt that he even played the game.
RDR2? GOW? Got bored and didn’t finish either of em
Best game, fine. But how did it win best music and story?
@PS_Nation You're the type to say Sekiro is GOTY if it was ONLY on PS, your PS bootlicking is outrageous. I'm not even going to prove to you GOW is sitting on my harddrive waiting for a second playthrough and defeat those Valkyries along, it's a wonderful game but not better than RDR2. At least it's evident RDR2 stands 3 points ahead of GOW at 97 on Metacritic, the voice of that many critics holds more weight than some awards show. Movies, Music, Games etc we all know Awards shows don't always get it right with them.
@kyleforrester87 Nah, yours is a case of buying too many games. I'm even struggling to beat AC Odyssey right now because I feel I have a bunch of other games waiting for a second playthrough.
@TheArt ehhh not really, I bought hardly any in 2018 if I’m honest, compared to 2017 at any rate. Sekiro has me hooked right now, the last game to get me like this was Nier and before that Hyper Light Drifter. Just my taste in games is a bit different I suppose - millions can’t be wrong I guess!
@TheArt Do not project your hate of exclusives on me. Guess what genius, the same critics are choosing God of War as game of the year, lmao.
God of War won the majority of awards handled by critics and players, just check the site gotypicks if you are still in denial.
RDR 2 is overrated like many Rockstar games (GTA IV with 98 on metacritic hahaha) the mechanics are archaic, the side-quests are boring with many fetch quests, at least the first RDR tried to create a narrative with the side-quests People are Strange. The multiplayer is a broken mess.
If you prefer the game, that’s your opinion, but stop pushing lies about God of War just because your favorite game lost by a mile.
@PS_Nation 😂😂 But how does anybody hate exclusives? If you only knew how I used to defend PS3 and talk crap about 360 till I grew up and realized the fanboyism was needless. And of course when I say 5 characters I expect you to get it like the rest of the community, that I'm exaggerating and that they are just a handful, not many. Sam and Robert didn't even pick GOW as their number 1 so there's that too. They picked it as the site's GOTY though just to make guys like you happy. 😉
@TheArt They are not the only members of the staff. So let me get this straight...According to you, every outlet prefer RDR 2, but they gave the award to God of War just to appeal the “fanboys” like me. Besides, can’t forget that, according to you as well, they hate UK and that’s another reason why RDR 2 didn’t win.
Ok, gotcha. Good luck out there.
@kyleforrester87 Well its better then the AC games so much padding in those games. I was happy that Syndicate ended they stretch out these games so much.
I've played both games now where I can give my thoughts.
God of War:
PROs
Is an astonishing achievement of revitalising a franchise that many felt had better days.
It gives new depth to an iconic gaming character without taking away who he his.
Support cast great backstory to this new Nordic world while also providing subtle metaphors to the main cast.
Combat is truly amazing and despite the lack of blood and dismemberment the previous games had, still feels more impactful. And that bloody axe!
CONS
Some upgrades didn't offer much.
Menus could do with been a bit cleaner.
Valkyrie fights can be really tough, even on easy.
Red Dead Redemption 2:
PROS
Stands with The Witcher 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn in giving an open world feels like an actual world rather then a place with repeated quests.
Provides a story of the death of a family and a way of life.
Raises the bar in NPCs interactions and dynamic events.
Guns have suitable impact.
Story quests often feel like it's progressing the story.
CONS
Can get a bit lost in it's goal for realism.
Moving Arthur about in combat and small space can feel clunky due to animations been a bit stiff.
Game requires patience, don't go look to rush through it.
Overall both games achieve above and beyond what they set out to do and rightly will be seen as games of the generation.
What counted against RDR2 in terms of awards was everyone expected it to be great but GoW caught many off guard and surprise will always beat what's expected. Stories about the working conditions of Rockstar staff will have counted against it too. Plus with the whole push back against microtransactions GoW came along and was a AAA game with no multiple editions, season passes, MTXs and DLC add ons so it all added to providing a feel good story.
