PS5 PlayStation 5 Sony Mark Cerny 1

Sony has been working on the PlayStation 5 for the past four years, meaning that work got underway at some point in 2015 – little over a year after the PlayStation 4 launched. According to a new Wired article, the system is not being built as a “mere upgrade” like, say, the PS4 Pro before it. Instead, the manufacturer wants to fundamentally change “what a game can be”.

The good news is that the PS5 is being designed within the same architecture as the PS4, which means that it will sport full backward compatibility with the console maker’s current unit. But it will be bringing some bold and innovative new features to the fray, such as ray tracing, 3D audio, and a super-fast SSD drive. The device is not due out this year, and will likely drop in 2020.
