It's confirmed: Death Stranding has a release date, and it's the 8th November 2019. Yep, the still-mysterious PlayStation 4 exclusive is actually launching later this year. The date was revealed at the end of a brand new trailer, which you can watch above.
Needless to say, the game still looks absolutely mental. In the trailer, we get to see exploration, driving, a bit of combat, and some crazy cutscenes. It's pretty much the most informative video yet. And with that, we don't really know what else to say about it -- you're probably better off just watching it for yourself.
In the meantime, here's what Hideo Kojima himself has to say about Death Stranding:
“Death Stranding” is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the “Strand” or connection. As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.
Are you happy with the release date for Death Stranding? Did you honestly expect it to launch in 2019? Remember to take a baby with you in the comments section below.

I'm in shock. Genuine shock.
Absolutely obscenely good trailer. This game looks outrageously incredible. I can't wait.
Okay, I'm in.
As much as I've ragged on this game thus far, that trailer honestly did get me pretty interested! Dunno if it's a day one, but they certainly have my attention now.
Whatever this game's actually about, the marketing is brilliant.
Eh, I dunno how much of a good game they could have made, with so little development time when they had to start completely from scratch. I love Kojimi so I won't write it off, but just seems too soon.
Damn this made my day = )
Considering the game was announced in June 2016 with development barely started that's a hell of turn around. Sony did say that they were amazed at how quick Kojima Productions were being.
It's about connection of hearts, thank god, and not some online bull. I knew this looked like something special from the first teaser and now... Damn, now I could just watch this video on repeat all day long.
November...this year....mind blown.
I'm interested in the story, but I'm still not entirely sold on the gameplay. However, I do think it's very unique, in a good way.
Dudes....MY DUDES...I am beyond hyped! I just want this game to come out now...let me play it Hideo San pls!
Why are people on social media saying this also gonna come on pc? Did i miss something?
Only a Kojima game trailer could be nearly 9 minutes long. I'm very intrigued by this I must say.
@AlejandroMora I dont see that "only on playstation" tag on the Box art (and the start of the video too) so maybe Kojima Pro and Sony had an agreement
EDIT: I guess it's up to Kojima Pro whether to release it on PC some time later
Your move, Microsoft
Lots going through my head watching that for 8 minutes.
At first it made me think of "The Passage" tv show which i just finished watching all 10 episodes. Not quite similar, but it was my latest exposure to a post apocalyptic story line.
Then it focused on the people and it made me think this should have been the first Squenix CG movie "FF:The Spirits Within". I can't remember all of it, saw it in theaters when it first released, but it seems like there are similarities.
Finally, I hope it has a story mode, because all of that exploration and running isn't something I want to do if it's a trial and error type game play where I am going to die every 10 minutes. Maybe I'll just watch all the cut scenes on YT if I don't hear good stuff about the game play.
It is impressive though. And a date. Making that - TLOU2 in 2020 - rumour sound very realistic.
Who needs E3?
Looks absolutely bonkers. Can't wait!!!!
n.i.c.e.that was one crazy a💞💖 trailer dog.cool.man ps4 news keeps getting better.with the psplus games and this trailers is off the chains.playa.word up son
@Nightcrawler71 MS ran outta moves like, 10 rounds ago
The PC release was quietly mentioned a long time ago, must have been part of the deal Sony made with Kojima.
I did say maybe on an article comment or maybe on the forum that this was a lot closer to being finished than most people though.
Not seen the trailer yet but I'm not sold on this so far.
The turn around is quick because Kojima was gifted one of the best game engines in the business from Guerilla Games. He probably had the story arc in his head whilst doing MGSV and that trailer was insanely good! Looks like I know what Im buying this Black Friday! Konami, what on earth were you thinking letting this guy go?!
Hmmm.
I'll wait for reviews before buying in, but I am incredibly intrigued. The multiplayer aspect sounds very "baked in" to the core experience of the gameplay.
Yep. Still no idea
now give me ghost of tshushima release date also.word up son
@playstation1995 Heck yeah
@AdamNovice Would you happen to have a source for that? I’ve never heard such an announcement and I’ve been following the game closely. From what I read before, Sony is publishing Death Stranding and it is full exclusive.
@Wunters "one of the best game engines in the business from Guerilla Games"
Well that probably explains why I've spent all morning feeling like I've been watching trailers for HZD2. thanks.
And yeah, if he had a few talented artists and the story already in his head 3 years should be enough time to create a decent game working with an established game engine of that caliber. And it's Kojima, not some kid in his parents basement, he has some experience w/ this type of thing.
@Amplified that doesn't mean anything Detroit become human says only on playstation and look what happenned.
I still feel that the PlayStation 5 will end up getting a complete edition, one that has had some stuff cut out of the game. Unless it becomes free DLC if any I always find that any game Kojima makes disc space is never big enough
Looks good but I hope the world isn't as empty as MGSV.
@Ralizah Where did you see a "multiplayer aspect" at all?
@AlejandroMora well, considering that they used Decima Engine which is a Sony IP, maybe it wont come to PC afterall
@makoshichi As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.
Crazy that it's less then 6 months away.
Previously thought it looked a bit crap, but great trailer and the story looks like it will be amazing so I’m interested now. Calling it a completely new type of action game’ is a stretch though, the gameplay segments themselves look on the boring to average side.
wow definitely grabbing this day one very cool 8 minutes!
@Ralizah, I hope its more of a Soulsborne like multiplayer experience, where the Online functions are always there and can affect the gameplay a bit, but you're not actually forced to do so
@rjejr @Wunters The AI of HZD is insane. I tried to get to higher ground and let off a few arrows into a Snapmaw, but noooo Mr. Clever Snapmaw moved up a hill to at least be the same height as Aloy and started shooting ice. Meanwhile I would've easily stood on a crate in Doom or just about any other game and shoot enemies with no scratch.
@SaikoWaifu2003 Ghost of Tsushima as well
@Ralizah I got so psyched that I didn't even realised that there is text that came with the trailer. Thanks.
@Amplified Me too. I also hope it doesn't require a sub to fully experience, y'know?
Hopefully Sony will clear up what "creating bonds with other players around the globe" means, exactly.
I have no idea if the trailer should off too much information, or not enough
@Ralizah I want more of that "illusory wall ahead" or "try Jumping" kind of Online connection that Kojima is talking about, not that "play with 4 random people in this segment because we want you to" thing
Now we're talking. Definitely excited for this!
@Peach64 A huge amount of game development is spent on creating the engine. Fortunately guerilla games gave Kojima the decima engine to use. Which powered horizon zero dawn. By the time the game releases it will have been in development over 3 years. Which is plenty of time when you have the engine made already.
That’s one crazy trailer. I’m not as confident as others that this will turn out well - great cut scenes, great actors, crazy plot, but not sure about the gameplay. Kojima has a good track record, though.
@TheArt Were the Snapmaws the big crocodiles? I remember that 1 battle on the little island were we were required to kill one to save a girl or something. I mostly steered clear of them after that fight. And I played the entire game on easy but those were still insane. Really fast and clever. Possibly even more difficult than the lumbering T-rex megadeath machines.
That was a crazy trailer, insanely high production values. What do the walking-sim naysayers have to say now after seeing that motorcycle traversal and third-person shooting? Day one!
Looks all kinds of legit
It might end up being pants but right now, it looks bloody amazing!!! Trying to resist the urge to impulse preorder!
@AlejandroMora so does the PS4 release of FFX HD
Well, I wasn't expecting Nicolas Winding Refn to be in this.
Ok.. now I'm interested, will be tempted to pre-order. Must.. resist..
Just sat down to watch that trailer with a brew. Now I'm questioning whether the brew even existed or if it was just in my head.
I'll be getting this game by Christmas at the very latest.
Jeeeez, that's one of the best trailers I've seen in years. It looks mind-blowing!
Really liked that video it's looking so good, that's one for me at Xmas I think (if I can wait that long) anything with Kojima on the box is a must own imo
Am I the only one who wasn't even remotely interested in this game? Now granted, I never appreciated Kojima's work (PT excluded), but still … this doesn't do anything for me.
Gameplay wise, it gave me many MGS vibes, with supernatural elements both in the narrative as well as in the bestiary.
If I ever get it, it'll be for 10$ or less. Not my cup of tea.
Great video and the first game that I still have no idea what's going on but I may just end up buying.
Still would of preferred the Silent Hill game though..just saying.
Is this a exclusive they dont say that in the trailer?
@deepspace5d sadly not but when a game doesn't carry a "only on PlayStation" label it tends to mean it going onto another platform.
Well, that piqued my interest. We get to see combat and vehicular travel rather than just walking and climbing.
This game is going to be the Twin Peaks of video games!
Wow..very impressive! Still not sure if it's a day one for me but I'm really curious to learn more about this game now. I looks like another Kojima masterpiece but I'm still not sold on the gameplay
@AdamNovice Well I understand your reasoning, but you said it was quietly mentioned a long time ago that it will release on PC, so I was just wondering who mentioned that.
In this case, Death Stranding is being published in-house by SIE, so I doubt it sees release anywhere but Sony consoles.
I'm pretty excited for this now.
Told you all it will be this year. Was already confirmed by Sony months ago of games releasing this year and even posted on this site, but the skeptical you never believed.
@Amplified
It says 'DS is a trademark of SIE'
After seeing the trailer I believe is a post apocalyptic-pizza delivery man-walking simulator staged during WWI
🤔😂
All the hype and build up and I still just can’t seem to care about this game. Hopefully once it comes out I can see something that makes me want to get it. As of now though it looks a lot like a boring walking sim.
This trailer definitely has me now interested in Death Stranding. It looks to have a good blend of deep story and action.
Looks like this post apocalyptic USA is caused by the ghosts of the war dead rather than zombies.
I think it will turn out to be rather ordinary. Looks like another third person game in which you walk from cutscene to cutscene. Find it hard to see the revolutionary part so far. Wonder if it can match the topgames in this genre.
Still don't get what this game is all about. Hmmm. I guess I will find out sooner rather than later now that release date is out. DieKaiser92.. Ouut!!!
Fancy online walking simulator featuring big name voice actors. I get a Snowpiercer vibe from it.
No idea what this is meant to be but I know I'm clearing a window in November to play this and this alone 😁😁😁
@AlejandroMora - It was always going to be on PC, it was announced as a Sony console exclusive and PC game.
@deepspace5d The walking-sim crowd seemed to have a problem in grasping what a walking-sim is to begin with, it makes me so happy we won't be hearing from them again

I’m always in on kojima games since metal gear solid 1 on psone, day one 😃
Had to stop watching halfway through. Got hit by the hype train. Off to A&E.
@Shigurui Where? I've look as much as I can about this "coming to PC" statement yet can't find a single source supporting that. It was never once announce that it will be coming to PC. If you can provide a legitimate source I'll believe you but this is basically people saying RDR 2 is coming to PC and we never heard a single word about it since.
@rjejr Yep those crocodiles. They're superfast, one time there was one in the middle of a river and I was standing on shore shooting at it thinking by the time it crawls towards me it'd be dead. Guy didn't even bother creeping towards me, it leapt straight from the middle of the river at such speed and long range and smacked me off to my surprise.
I'm probably going to be in the minority here but I will wait for the reviews on this one given the short development time. The trailer looks bonkers and I have no idea what it's all about, but remain intrigued.
Fingers crossed it scores well.
I liked the trailer, and the story looks both interesting and relevant what with the current (and IMO unfortunate) worldwide apparent rise in separatist ideology.
Gameplay could go either way, and its hard to get a bead on how the story might come together. The MGS5 trailers were all well edited and it looked like we were in for a narrative treat, and that really didn’t play out.
@kyleforrester87 'worldwide rise in separatist ideology.'
I think you mean Nationalist or Populist. Separatism is a by-product of a far right or left ideogy.
Crazy as it sounds I am a teensy bit disappointed. Unsure what I was expecting but Minecraft for adults wasn't it. Driving a weird Motorbike, escaping faceless enemies with some Assasins Creed type Animus stuff (the worst part of AC) thrown in.
Hopefully it all comes together and will likely have more context come November.
You sure it isn't 3019 the real date it comes out Can't wait But I bet it don't come out this year knowing Kojima(he is a GOD tho)
@themcnoisy nationalist is what I was after! You know me, not so bright!
Why does SONY need to be at E3 again?
wow, wow, wow... Kojima is just amazing.
@Agramonte Well, between this and Squenix having their own conference this year, I can understand why Sony decided it won't be at E3 2019
@Amplified Well, it is published by Sony, so I don't see it coming to any other platform...
Well, all I get from this trailer is that The Last of Us 2 is not a 2019 release given when Death Stranding is set to release. Disappointing because once again they were unable to sell me on this game being anything other than a confused mess. Weird for the sake of being weird and while that can work for games such as Yakuza, which clearly doesn't take itself seriously, it doesn't work here as Kojima seems to be going for something serious in nature. It just comes off as lame and frankly his teams haven't produced much outside the MGS series that could be considered great.
This calls for 5 more articles on the front page!
@makoshichi Well said and I agree. I question as well if those people know what an actual walking sim is.
I think I will start calling Bloodborne a walking sim, since the entirety of the game is spent on foot.
Hype off the charts, to be honest.
@deepspace5d LOL that was brilliant mate. I suppose I could do that as well
@Gamer83 I’m still in that same place too, except I only consider msg1 and maybe 2 great. More recently I remember him as the guy who thought “she breathes through her skin” to be a legit reason for the only major female to a naked with a big gun.
(I do hope the game turns out, but I’m skeptical)
@TheArt I really need to finish HZD. For whatever reason I stopped after getting rescued by that guy in the arena. I basically played it for like 80 hours and stopped w/ about 10 hours left. And half the DLC story. Probably shouldn't have played the DLC until I finished the game, but Aloy was there so...
HZD2 is probably my most anticipated game right now. Well maybe Pikmin 4. God of War would be but I'm afraid it will be a trilogy and I don't feel like waiting until PS6 to fight Odin.
But I really should go back and finish HZD.
I'm honestly can't see how people rush to day one purchase anymore. Does it look interesting, yep. But we still know so little. We know of vehicles but what of the world itself. So many open world games fail due to bland emptiness of the world between interesting parts and we see nothing yet that says that's not the case here as well.
I'm interested for sure, but I need to see far more of the world to know if it's interesting or not. But so far I have no clue and could be boring. And this is being said by a person who never fast travelled in RDR2 because I loved exploring the world. I hope it's great, but for now I'm not sold.
But really, "As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society" Did they really have to go there with the name?
@Agramonte
I could imagine if Sony was at E3 and people would go 'why not wait for E3 to show this? Why? Why?'
Its so weird haha
Ill never get it
Seriously... WTF!!!
(Pre-orders)
@Mega-Gazz
I mean, I had no problem with Quiet but yeah, he could've given a better, more honest answer for that one. Though she was more covered than some guys have been in his games as well so I don't get fussed about that stuff. I just think this game seems to lack any kind of focus. It's like he was given a blank check by Sony and they said 'do whatever you want.' That's what he's doing and it's going to end up like most of his games. Confused and probably boring.
@rjejr You really need to finish it and do those Hunters Lodge quests which would open an epic battle with a special Thunderjaw named RedMaw. HZD is such a game changer lots of people including me didn't realize it early 2017 because... ZeldaBOTW.
Hope Guerilla or Naughty Dog helped Kojima with the animations because I could still sense those generic Snake movements in the trailer.
@Gamer83 it’s not LIKE Sony gave him a blank cheque and said do whatever you want, that is LITERALLY what happened.
Late to the party since I’ve been working all day and open Push Square to find this! This is mental.
Kojima for President!
@TheArt I'm pretty sure I beat redmaw, I recall finishing that lodge. And most of the other side quest stuff, which is why it took me so long and I finally stopped w/o finishing the game. I did finish BotW first. Except that DLC, I couldn't figure any of them out after the hit kill section. I found the 3 signposts with the pictures but none of them made sense.
@rjejr Yes I did most of the side quests too being the completionist I am, took me about the same 80hrs+. I haven't played BOTW though, it just took all of HZD's shine. Sony needs a stylish celshaded RPG open world Zelda you know, something bigger than but looking like Okami. Persona 5 while long and stylish isn't really open world. HZD is quite that but it's realistic.
@Mega-Gazz
LOL, true. It's going to be interesting to see if that was money well spent. Like you I hope for the best, but still up to this point there has been nothing that is awe inspiring, just bland looking gameplay and an uninteresting narrative.
Hope its good I got $30 off for preordering.
Hmm. The word pretentious comes to mind.
Other than looking very pretty, it still didn't do much for me. Very preachy at the end.
@ArmyofOne Kojima's name means a lot, and he knows it, so don't think we'll be let down - but that remains to be seen of course!
@ArmyofOne I don't care for Kojima, at all. But this game looks great.
Am I the only one that thinks that that bit at the end with Mads Mikkelsen staring at the viewer and saying "I'll show you the real thing soon, I promise..." is a nod by Kojima to all the people that say that these trailers are nice but don't really explain what the game is like? It seems just like the kind of thing Kojima would do...
@TheArt I did feel bad for HZD when Link & Zelda won all those awards that year and HZD got blanked. (At least that's how I remember it.) But I do think it had more to do w/ the 20+ year mystique of Link & Zelda than the cel shading. If Nintneod stopped making Zelda games and Aloy gets 15 more sequels then in another 20 years HZD: A New Dawn may win over some other new IP.
It's kinda crazy though, I played both for a ton of hours, and they are the same, but not at all. I still can't even decide which 1 I enjoyed more. I was addicted to BotW, I kept meaning to stop but I just couldn't, but I had more actual fun and interest while playing HZD. But the fact that I never finished it must mean something. Best thing about Zelda was that it wasn't a Zelda game. I don't like Zelda games, only BotW and Hyrule Warriors. The 4 beasts, which were the most Zeldaish, were by far the worst part of the game. Until the DLC, that just sucked.
@rjejr The last Zelda I ever played is Ocarina of Time on N64, since then I've never had a Nintendo and I've been missing Zelda and Mario. With HZD, I'm even shocked I love it cause I bought it in 2018 after being so skeptical. I was busy enjoying Persona 5 in April 2017, I didn't get the shooting arrows at robots in a medieval world concept. I gave it a chance and now it turns out it's up there with my favourites this gen.
@sonicmeerkat How did you get $30 off for pre-ordering?
@KidBoruto 3 years ago during E3 amazon had death stranding, and red dead 2 up for preorder $30 off.
@TheArt "I didn't get the shooting arrows at robots in a medieval world concept."
Took me a few reads to figure out if you were talking about HZD or Zelda BotW.
@sonicmeerkat Damn that's a great deal, wish I had known about it.
