Update: This video has been released by PlayStation Japan in celebration of the 20th anniversary, but there are no hints to a new title at all. Meanwhile, the new Twitter account has promoted the updated website as well as a pop-up shop that will be selling "special items". It's nice to see PlayStation celebrating its franchise, but we're starting to think this isn't what everyone is hoping for.
Original story: We told you to watch this space back in April, and it looks like something might be on the horizon for fans of the long-dormant Ape Escape franchise. A new Twitter account has been set up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, and its first tweet is most definitely an interesting one. Check it out below.
The tweet roughly translates as "It's been 20 years since then. I have been running/escaping this whole time, but I wonder if anyone is even still chasing me anymore?" At face value, this could have been taken as a post simply honouring the 20 years of the franchise, but here's where things get interesting.
The profile is followed by the official account of Sony Japan Studio and prominent developers there. Of course, these sorts of industry folk wouldn't follow a brand new Twitter account out of the blue for a laugh, right? We reckon there really is something going on here.
Are we getting our hopes up too much? Deflate our anticipation in the comments below.

Remake or sequel, I don't care.
Just as long we're getting a new Ape Escape for the PS4, I'm okay what they bring to the table...just as long it retains the same gameplay but with some refinements of course haha.
getting a bit late for a new ps4 release from sony... unless it comes out this year, i say save it as a ps5 launch title.
Ape Escape Remake launch title for PS5 confirmed!
Boy, I sure hope so.
I have the first three games on my shelf, but I would be happy with either the third game on PSN similar to two, or a remake of the first game.
@Porco remember Sony has said there are unannounced new titles from Sony Worldwide Studios coming for PS4. Just as well, as they are guaranteed to be compatible with the PS5.
So don't write off the PS4 just yet!
@Turismo4GT it is possible for sure! but in terms of having a strong ps5 launch strategy, it would make more sense having it be a ps5 exclusive but that is just me
@Deadlyblack if they remake the first game, it will be the second time as they did that already for the psp. perhaps a remake of the ENTIRE trilogy would be more interesting... a "remix" of sorts, taking the best levels and gadgets from all three games would be very nice! similar to what namco did with katamari forever on the ps3...
Please for the love of God don't read too much into this.
@Porco That's right, I keep forgetting about the PSP remake all the time.
I absolutely loved this franchise as a kid, using the original dualshock with this blew my mind! Would love a modern take on this franchise!
oh hell yeah baby! , loved me some Ape Escape on the OG PlayStation , with how well the remakes of the other original Classics have been doing , i would easily take this with almost certainty and i will gladly purchase it.
Ape escape 1-3 remastered by bluepoint for ps4 this fall, ape escape 4 by sony japan studio for ps5 launch
@Porco Why PS5 is backwards compatible. 😉
@Deadlyblack How about a triologie pack like Uncharted. 😃
@Porco I don't think a remaster/remake is much of a system seller. They can afford releasing it on PS4. It will be drowned out by other games like Horizon 2 or whatever the launch titles for the PS5 are if it was a PS5 launch game. And that includes a new entry in the franchise I think.
@Porco im feeling very confident that PS5 is launching with Horizon Zero Dawn 2 as its big launch title. Ape Escape would sadly be drowned out by that and other big 3rd party releases. So long as its cross-compatible, i think its fine for this to come out on PS4. 🙂
Would love a remake of Ape Escape one day! But yeah, classic case of people getting ahead of themselves this time by the looks of it. Still, anyone going to Japan over the summer can snag some nice goodies at least!
I am disappoint 😔
Didn't realise that there were that many different Ape Escape games(well most look like Japanese releases only) It would be cool for a Ape Escape HD Trilogy and a new Ape Escape 4 game LOVE Ape Escape games in the past but that monkey sound does still give me nightmares trying to catch them all in the PS1 and PS2 days.
Oh boy I remember the days of spectre trying to defeat the bugger I cant wait to see what comes of this to be fair.
