Sony is investing the bulk of its efforts with the PlayStation 5 into blockbuster games, and according to the Wall Street Journal, that’s left indie developers and smaller publishers feeling like outsiders. But speaking anonymously with author Takashi Mochizuki, one executive explained that it’s not a problem because the platform is simply “too large to ignore”.
There’s a hint of arrogance to this statement, but it’s not exactly incorrect. At the end of the day, virtually all third-party titles end up on PlayStation, because the market is enormous. Still, there’s a definite danger that the platform holder could end up initially missing out on indie success stories, so it needs to be careful here.

All this info drop im waiting for a Ps5 price, release date, and more BC news to happen next
yeah it sounds big headed but they are right, 91.6 million (as of December 31, 2018) units sold, that's SOLD not shipped and with backwards compatibility allowing people to carry their entire PS4 library over to the PS5 then there is a chance the PS5 could match those number (unless Sony mess up the launch) as people will want to carry on playing the games they already have so it's a potential HUGE market that can't be ignored
(if anyone is wondering when it comes to this gen the WiiU sold 13 million units, the XB1 is estimated to have sold 41 million units, MS wont release the sales numbers and the Nintendo Switch, which is part of this generation apparently as it's a complete replacement for the WiiU has sold 34.74 million units so consoles are still a large section of the gaming market so yes PlayStation, also XBOX and Nintendo ARE too big to ignore)
A bit arrogant but its not wrong.
PlayStation four is too big to ignore PlayStation five currently stands at zero units sold. Last time some indy developers moved development from PS3 to PS4 after it was clear that PS4 was a success in the market for new PS3 games had dropped away. I suspect this time they’ll keep the building the PS4 version and just rely on backwards compatibility.
As long as the games release on playstation it’s okay I guess.
It’s true though. If we can expect the PS5 to sell in a similar range to the PS4, why would any small Indie studio want to skip potentially 100 million customers?
A studio would have to be paid big to willingly skip a Sony console. And even then, is it worth it? You can argue the Tomb Raider brand was damaged with disappointing sales from their 1-year timed exclusivity that was made with Xbox for Rise of the Tomb Raider.
I'm getting tired of these "anonymous speakers" - news only have value when coming from open sources, and we customers reading these news aren't playing some effin' political spy games here - this is all ENTERTAINMENT news we (or at least our human portions if not the fan ulcers) can perfectly live without. Either you can openly share what you're entitled to share or you can sho... keep it, thank you very much.
That said, the point in question isn't news anyway. Even PS3 saw an influx of third party games during its early price-anchored years.
Sigh, arrogance, bad side of gaming history might repeat itself with this new Sony leader. Year 3 before I splash on PS5 then!
eh, sony is not going to leave out the indi publishers. what would sony have to gain by doing that other than limiting itself as well as its own software diversity? i think these statements are taken out of context. be rational and understand that sony is not going to cut the little guy out because that would be no different than reducing your own revenue stream.
True, the PlayStation has a big presence in the industry, and likely will have for a very long time.
But beware of arrogant behaviour Sony, just remember the arrogance of Microsoft in 2013, don't do that.
Said Nintendo in 2013.
And Xbox in 2013.
And Sony in 2006.
I sense a trend, in that it's not a given. You'd think Steam is too big to ignore for PC distribution, based on sheer market share and name value. Look how thats going. Money talks.
Careful now Sony. Dont make assumptions. And dont alienate those who helped to make ps4 a success
@FullbringIchigo Yeah, 91.5m PS4s.
But how many PS5s?
Here's the thing. You can't say "PS5 WILL succeed because of what we did with PS4, and therefore people will put the games on regardless, while we intentionally alienate them"
That to me says, yeah they'll do it, because we feel they have no choice. Thats not a healthy attitude.
And what if the PS5, lets say for hypotheticals, does stumble out the gate akin to PS3, but pick up in the end? Will people be putting games on that over a higher selling competitor, "Just because"?
Remember even now there are games not coming to PS4, @deepspace5d, and those weren't paid for by other platform holders. Golf Story, Switch only. Fully independent. Octopath Traveler, isn't coming to PS4, despite being Square Enix. Cuphead isn't coming to PS4, despite Microsoft's platform-agnostics. SMTV isn't coming, despite being made by Atlus, Sony's best friend.
See the trend? Money doesn't dictate it, and if PS5 does hypothetically fall, this attitude will bite them.
I'd rather see a company welcome all developers, and offer a broad range of content, over saying b******s to you, you'll put it on here anyway.
@Knuckles-Fajita oh precisely but that's why i said there was a chance the PS5 could match the PS4, not that it would
but i do think with the PS5 being backwards compatible that many PS4 owners will get a PS5 too especially those who use the PS4 as their main system because they can carry their games over
So people are simply going to believe an anonymous source.
Alright then.
I hope they do good with the seamless experience without a console through some tablet like device that they may release in a few years after the PS5's launch and as a option for remote play and cloud streaming with PS Now pushed even harder!
@Mince
Nothing wrong stating facts
In fairness, no-one yet has a PS5 and so the 'numbers' are not there for companies to base a judgement on whether or not its worth its while in releasing games to that format.
However, you only need to look at Sony's track record with sales for their consoles over the last 20yrs - The PS3 was weakest at only ~80m (+/- 5m) and the PS2 and PS4 both over 100m (at least will be) as well as big assets (their developers and franchises) that will bring gamers to the platform - even if the many of the games are as yet known due to the fact that the console isn't out and numerous devs are still finishing off releases for this generation. No doubt if follow ups to H:ZD, GoW, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Last of Us, Spider-Man etc get announced and release on PS5, gamers will, if they haven't already, buy the PS5.
It doesn't matter if MS takes 10 or 20m PS4 subscribers with their console or whether MS has the 'biggest' combined users because of merging PC and Xbox into one 'eco-system', or whatever happens, Playstation will still be BIG and too big to ignore. Whether the gaming landscape changes with Stadia coming in or not, Sony has the Assets (Developer Studio's) to keep a sizeable share of the gaming market invested in their eco-system.
@Knuckles-Fajita Yes you’re talking about exclusives for the most part. There is always going to be exclusives when the console manufacturer is the publisher. That’s what I said by alot of money has to be given to a developer for them to miss Sony’s console.
Sounds like to me that what ever was said has been taken out of context, I don't think Sony will abandon Indies as much as people think.
I generally don't think most PS4 gamers are interested in Indies and I buy my Indies on Switch, I don't see the benefit of buying on PS4.
But you'll want to try sell your product where the most people are.
@deepspace5d The games I listed arent exclusive because they are published by the console manufacturer.
Because they arent.
Golf Story - Published by Sidebar Games
Octopath Traveler - Published by Square Enix
Cuphead - Published by Studio MDHR
SMTV - Published by Atlus
Yet they are exclusives.
And yes, Octopath WAS published in some regions by Nintendo. But so was Skyrim, and DOOM, and Dragon Quest 11/Builders and Dark Souls.
@eltomo PS vita is a indie powerhouse machine though so you have to give sony credit for that even though they did abandon it.
It's only since Switch landed that Playstation hasn't been the go to place for Indies this generation, I'm personally not that concerned that they will all disappear from the platform just because Sony think it's to big to ignore.
Here is hoping they keep the smaller titles rollin. Some of my favorite experiences have been by 1 man/woman teams or very small teams
It only will be arrogant if they are simply resting on the notion that they are big and not doing things to remain important. And with all the info we hear about the ps5, I think they are doing everything they can to remain in this position.
@Mince don't mention it and thank you for the reply that added absolutely nothing to the conversation
"PlayStation is too big to ignore." Now when have I heard that before...
Honestly I'd be worried about PS5's launch if not for the fact that it's Marc Cerny working on it.
Arrogant.. Let`s wait for 2 yrs. than we`ll see...
I just recently sold my TV and PlayStation.
I'm tired of all the bad games.
That being said I've got over $2000 worth of digital titles.
So when Elder Scrolls 5 comes out then you bet your bottom dollar Ps5 will be my platform of choice
At least until the 8th re-release of Elder Scrolls 5, then I might have to upgrade.
wish people would let Sony get on with it we have seen nothing official yet these stories with slight negativity attached are not needed without facts.
@Nakatomi_Uk yep totally agree.
The second I'll get my hands on a Switch I'll be ignoring Sony the way liberals ignore Fox News. Sick of its censorship and PS Plus lineup poo.
@MicroHard Since you just created your account here I know you reviewed the community rules before joining. So let me remind you that that sort of language is not allowed here.
Thanks for understanding
@Mince Sorry but I don't have a switch. Lol 😁👌
Have fun going gaga over it though!
@Mince Also don't worry! PS5 is confirmed to have remote play and cloud streaming away from your console so switch has competition again and will die in 2020! Haha! 😁👌
Funny all these 'news' coming from that guy... and the like of 'speaking anonymously with author Takashi Mochizuki, one executive explained''
And the internet is losing its mind and all. People never learn haha
Next up: Jason heard something...
And next Colin then says 'I heard stuff like that too... '
Haha
i think SIE has got some of the wrong people in their current roles at the minute. i don't think all these mixed-message rumours would be going around if andy house, adam boyce, etc. were still there. i expect there's some context to this statement (if it's accurate) that missing. sony made a lot of investment in "indie" studios early on in PS4, housemarque, thatgamecompany, q-games, giant sparrow, the chinese room, hello games.. i suspect it feels that these investments won't be necessary on PS5, because the install base will be 100m+, as it will not matter whether its played on PS4 or PS5 and there's no extra development burden on smaller studios, and the studios should now be able to rely on its own sales. i doubt the statement means that sony is no longer interested in having indie games on its system, and i'd still expect them to be on the lookout for projects that interest it, but it will focus more of its own investment and resources on big projects, as it has done for the last 3 years or so. last i saw, PS4 had almost double the number of games as XB1, there's practically several small indie games every week on PSN.
They're gonna go through another 260 vs PS3 on the next generation in my opinion. Their services are worst than MS in terms of Plus vs Game Pass, the fact that the neXt Box is gonna incorporate game streaming and a box all in one and Playstation is just dissing it is just not very good at all.
Sure they will have exclusives and such but that will be mostly single player. The way I see it I will be getting and Xbox for 90% of my gaming needs including multiplayer and a Playstation for a few exclusives and maybe VR down the line if it improves radically.
I thought that at some stage Sony really wanted to get indie games on board guess thats changed. Not everyone wants to spend £60 on big games.
Arrogant Sony. I truly hope indie devs will get closer to Nintendo and release their games on the Switch first. This way I'd have the blockbuster beast (Guerrilla, I'm still waiting for a HZD2 announcement) and the Zelda/indie/on-the-go machine
This guys' head is even bigger.
Sorry, it was too easy to let it slip
What the hell are you on about? We get loads of incredible Indies. You clearly haven't played Life of Black Tiger
All I want is AAA blockbusters from Sony, MachineGames, Naughtydog, Capcom, Code masters and anyone else who wants to make epic games.
I don't have time to play Indies.
All i want from PS5 (and PS4 for that sake), is AAA games. If I wanted to play indie games i would just play on a phone 😊
@Rob_230 No one really bought PS4s to play indie games.
@hotukdeals Sony supported indie games during the current PS4 years. So if they are willing to move past that then it is probably because they know that it isn't worth the effort. Idie games aren't exactly killing it in sales
