Despite what you may see and hear in the above video, it is not a subliminal advert for Ubisoft, and nor was it filmed at a public swimming pool. It is, in fact, off-screen gameplay of Genshin Impact, a new PlayStation 4 title announced and shown off at ChinaJoy. In the nine-minute clip, we get to see someone exploring the lush, green open world, dispatching various baddies with multiple playable characters, and cooking some lovely food.
It looks pretty good, doesn't it? Okay, so it's clearly inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it looks highly enjoyable in its own right. No matter how similar it may seem, it's not worth smashing up your PS4 Pro in the middle of the convention in protest.
What do you think of Genshin Impact? Does it bother you that it has some Zelda DNA? Do some rock climbing in the comments below.

Remember when people called Far Cry 3 a "Skyrim with guns"?
This is like "BotW but with more anime", which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
It looks fantastic. And I bet, it will have more interesting and rewarding side quests than Nintendo's "original".
It bothers me that the sword on his back doesn't move when he runs.
But yeah clones are not worth getting this worked up over.
@Lando_ The sidequests were easily the least impressive part of BotW... but i'd be more interested if this game could pull off any semblance of the still-peerless open world exploration aspect.
This game is better than zelda, it has better graphics and coming to multiple platforms.
@RogerRoger It's not about the open world, it is about the graphics. Textures, grass, cel shading, character design, colours, gliding. Everything looks exactly like Breath of the Wild.
I think calling this Waifu of the Wild is spot on because blarggh GROAWR PS4-SMASH!!
Looks good though.
As a Zelda fan, this is a day one for me.
@RogerRoger Exactly, spot on. Didn't you know, Nintendo invented watch towers, real time combat and gliding!
Let's hope this has more interesting gameplay than moving 800 rocks to a slightly different place to get more inventory space. Yahaha! You found me!
@Rhaoulos it looks more like WoW or Fortnite. Breath of the Wild typically has low environmental detail and a smudged look to it. This is sharper and bolder, like the two aforementioned games.
Hundreds of games had gliding in before BotW too (e.g. Sonic and Knuckles, then later Sonic Adventure, had climbing then gliding off, who accused BotW of copying that?). This is what RogerRoger is talking about, Nintendo imitate things that have been done countless times before and then get treated as if they invented it when the next similar game comes along.
the gameplay looks nothing like Zelda.nintendo are not original themselves hippocrites.word up son
@Lando_ combat me story for sure must be better.
@RogerRoger Yeesh. I thought you were above this console wars nonsense.
It's really annoying that people are saying it's like BOTW. It has more in common with what I see on my daily commute through Liverpool. Beating people up, nicking their stuff, rummaging through people's wares, changing outfits to escape the law. Running across the fields of Aintree before selling all of the stuff for level up powder.
Honestly, it looks like too much of a rip off, and it would undoubtedly affect my enjoyment of it. But that's just me.
Er. That comes state side i will play the crap out of it. I dont see anyone breaking consoles over Outer Worlds....thats CLEARLY Fallout in space. And also a highly anticipated game for me.
@RogerRoger "But let's not forget that, whenever Nintendo comes late to a party, everybody gets amnesia, bows down before them and believes that they planned, promoted, hosted and catered said party."
That comment doesn't seem a tad unreasonable to you?
Anyway, nobody is getting on this for being an open world adventure game. The stylistic similarities to BotW go beyond simple 'inspiration.' It even swipes BotW's clunky item management system. It looks so similar that one could be excused for thinking it was a fan mod.
Nevertheless, if you actually venture outside of your Sony bubble, you'll notice almost nobody in Nintendo fan communities is actually upset about this game. Some are even looking forward to it.
I’m down for more Breath of the Wild
This such a rip off, even the UI is copied, guys. This is beyond simply "inspiration". That said, I'll leave Nintendo's lawyers to handle it, hopefully it's good, I love BOTW and I'm down for this. Fingers crossed for a western release
I would get angry and smash up my Pro, but I play on it quite a lot. I might have to settle for my Xbox One. Wait, hang on, I have a dead PS1 rotting in my attic, that'll do.
EDIT: On second thought, I wont smash anything up because...
..I'm not a fool!!
“nintendo are not original themselves”
Can’t agree with that mate. They pretty much invented half the industry we know today...
To quote Ecclesiastes, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” Just not a big deal.
@Adam47 since when did better graphics and being multi-platform equate to the quality of a game? Hint: the answer is never.
@playstation1995 I cannot disagree with your comment more. Nintendo produces original content. While I do not want to have a console war discussion, it's my perspective that Sony has copied many of Nintendo's ideas and there is plenty of proof to back that statement
@Jimmy_G_Buckets Nintendo copies Sony also
@Jimmy_G_Buckets word up son
The climbing animation is creepy.
Big Nintendo fan here who also loves Playstation: this seems like such a silly thing to be upset and protest over. Yes, it's very much like Zelda, but that would be more for Nintendo to be concerned about not the players.
I didn't see ONE weapon break in that video. It's not a complete BOTW copy!
Looks cool to me.
It’s like breath of the wild, but not boring, with great graphics and normal weapon system, I didn’t see anything wrong with that
Not sure why people are praising the graphics on this so much. The textures are all over the placs (grass and characters look great, but rocks and various other background objects have little to no texture). The sword seems to float behind the character, and everything gets really muddy in the action sequences. Breath of the Wild is definitely WAYYYY more polished, which is kind of sad considering how much more horsepower you have with the ps4. At best, I would say this game is in a very Alpha stage at this point. That being said, it looks like it could make for a fun little Zelda clone once they clean it up.
Who brings their PS4 console to a convention???
I seriously doubt this will be anywhere near as good as BOTW. If the reviews are decent I might check it out though.
Good, now if only they made a plumber game, were you eat mushrooms and grow bigger on PS4.
Ok, I saw 3 video of the game on gematsu, this game seriously looks great, it’s like botw mixed with skyrim, if they have normal weapon system (not exploding weapon cr*p like botw) I think I gonna get this game on ps4.
combat looks better than botw - the rest ....who knows will find out when it comes out though - really dont care they stole from botw though - its how game development works - see something you like and then try and improve on it
The combat sure looks better than bore of the wild. It's a "clone" like Toukiden and God eater are Monster Hunter clones that is, not clones at all. Just all part of a genre.
It looks nothing like Breath of the Wild.
Ni No Kuni, Granblue Fantasy, NieR Automata, Sword Art Online, Naruto Ultimate Ninja and Ninja Storm, One Piece, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, Drakengard 3 and many more, are also Breath of the Wild clones, according to you that is.
Weapons break in Days Gone; definitely BotW clone.
You can use swords in Sekiro; BotW clone 100%
FE: Three Houses has cell-shade art style: BotW clone
Red Dead 2 is open world; also a BotW clone.
If anything, it only goes to show how generic Breath of the Wild actually is.
@RogerRoger The thing about Breath Of The Wild is it does it well, it culminates years of research on the part of Nintendo to produce their first truly non-linear game in more than 2 decades. Sure there are parts that have existed in other games, but then you could say that about literally every game that has ever existed, original ideas died a very long time ago. What BOTW does is fuse many different ideas and create a smooth and intuitive experience. What you seem not to understand (understandably for what is a playstation-centric website) is that Nintendo makes games better than their contemporaries on the part of the fact their games inspired the games that BOTW "copies", which I use lightly because no game has all of these features with the same scope and depth as BOTW (think of just cause which is another sandbox with literally no depth other than to destroy things and a half baked story.)
No one is a fanboy if they think BOTW did the open world the best, they're just stating an opinion that is held by a majority of people and it makes sense when you understand what it sets out to achieve and does almost perfectly. That is to say it isn't without it's shortcomings like it's weaker narrative that only exists as a reason to have you explore it's world and the dungeons that felt quite cookie cutter other than their sheer spectacle when seen from afar.
@Matroska "Hundreds of games had gliding in before BotW too (e.g. Sonic and Knuckles, then later Sonic Adventure, had climbing then gliding off, who accused BotW of copying that?). This is what RogerRoger is talking about, Nintendo imitate things that have been done countless times before and then get treated as if they invented it when the next similar game comes along."
This is such a weak argument lol, just because it's been done before doesn't mean it's been done well. Perfecting and refining on what already exists is something games have done for as long as they've existed. Nintendo isn't doing anything wrong on that part, and what people do praise BOTW for isn't even the paragliding in the first place. Zelda is an experience and it rightly deserves praise for creating a seamless open world that you can explore how you want to, with whatever tools you want to, climb whatever you want to and do literally whatever you want. Zelda gives the player a level of freedom with little to stand between the player and completing the game within a matter of minutes. The very principle of Breath Of The Wild is why it is so innovative, no game does it quite like Zelda and no game has since.
Typical of the chinese to completely rip off other IP. Absolutely pathetic.
@MadAussieBloke None of those look anything like Botw
