Look, we’ve spent the past 20 years pondering why SEGA appears to have given up on the ChuChu Rocket! franchise, so forgive us one article on what appears to be a smartphone exclusive. Set to release as part of the new Apple Arcade initiative, ChuChu Rocket! Universe is a bonafide spiritual successor to the cult Dreamcast classic, with an all-new storyline and the traditional gameplay experience intact.
For those of you who don’t remember the original, your objective is to guide streams of obedient mice around checkerboard arenas, avoiding any cats (or KapuKapus) who may get in your way. In multiplayer, you need to get the titular ChuChus into your spacecraft, while sending hazards in the direction of your pals. It’s the kind of gameplay loop that would feel right at home on the PlayStation 4, seeing as local multiplayer has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance.
Alas, it looks like it will be tied to iOS devices for the time being, but there’s always hope that it could be ported to consoles in the future. And frankly it should be, because a world where ChuChu Rocket! remains a relevant and viable franchise is a world which we want to live in.

Yeh the first online game I ever played on Dreamcast dint like it then and think I will pass again on it now. I just want new ideas that would be great not 20 year old games coming back! Love new and original games let’s hear it for death stranding something new and original!
I remember this game being a big deal on the Dreamcast 20 years ago but can't say I ever played it or was interested in playing it. And I really see it more as a Switch game than a PS4 game, looks like a top down Mario & DK: Minis on the March. Or a Bomberman like puzzler.
Surprised this is the only article we've seen mention Apple Arcade though. At $4.99 a month, (EDIT: Just remembered Apple TV+ is free for year, not Arcade, my mistake) I think it's more of a threat to the industry than Google's Stadia and that gets talked about on here occasionally. If nothing else Apple Arcade makes those full price Stadia games look even more ridiculous than they already were. Will be interesting to see how "rental" next gen gets w/ Xbox Game Pass and PS Now. Before long the only thing we'll be "buying" are $199 collectors editions.
@rjejr kotaku had one up early doors saying that it looked like a good line up. It looks pretty weak to be honest.
I have still have access to the Android release of Chu Chu Rocket (which has been delisted I think, but still shows in your library) and due to this probably won't see release on Android or outside Apple Arcade for a while.
Edit: Also - It is a really good game!! I'd highly recommend the original.
@KALofKRYPTON I think it's less about the line-up, more about the people who buy iPhones have been buying up 99 cent songs on iTunes for years, so $4.99 per month is nothing to them, 1 latte, so the parents who give their kids their old phones and tablets every few years when they buy new ones will be paying for this for games for their kids to play, and those kids may be spending less time gaming on consoles.
Well that was a long sentence. Anyway, I think $4.99 is psychologically relevant. Getting under 1 $5 bill appeals to people, even more so than say $5.99 or $7.99 would. $4.99 is loose change when you're drinking the Kool-Aid.
I know iPhone sales are down, Apple doens't report them anymore, but there are still a lot of people using them, and passing them and the iPads down to their kids.
When Sammy gets around to posting an article about Gamestop store closings sometime in the next few hours think how GS feels about Apple Arcade. They are basically locked out of that ecosystem entirely. I can't imagine too many people are even buying iTunes cards in their stores.
So yeah, not a lot of people trading in their PS4, or putting off buying a next gen PS for an iPad, but for people locked into that ecosystem it cuts down on expanding the PS user base. Growth is the problem. The Arcade games are almost secondary, it's more about the price for me. And if it turns out some of the games are actually good, well that could be a problem.
@rjejr
Apple have had their glory days. They have no USP whatsoever - people locked in to the ecosystem are the best they can hope to sway, but I can't see many 'gamers' buying in to Apple Arcade as any sort of gaming priority. Probably not even as a secondary consideration.
My daughter is 12, and while I've certainly not brought her up with Apple products being a feature, even her pals at school are pretty disparaging about Apple devices and the ecosystem - mostly the ones who do have new and second hand iPhones.
They're fragile, temperamental, unnecessarily expensive to buy and maintain and still trailing behind Android in functionality and usability.
@KALofKRYPTON As I said earlier, it's not about stealing gamers now, it's about stealing potential gamers going forward.
I can't argue w/ a tween girl, she certainly knows more about what's going on than my teenage sons who don't really do social media outside of Discord for chatting with friends, so I'll just hope she's right.
I mean by all rights Apple really should just go away. Jobs was Apple and he's gone, and not too many people really need $1,000 phones. Blackberry went away and it was huge for awhile. Apple should get picked apart like Amazon, Hulu, Disney and Apple will do to Netflix eventually. NF will stick around, but as 1 of many, not THE streaming service. Apple should just be another phone, not a lifestyle brand.
But $200 billion w/ a B dollars cash on hand should help keep them in a position of relevance for awhile yet. And Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade will get them a lot more "free" publicity for now.
So to try and be remotely relevant to this site, I think Apple Arcade is a greater threat than Google Stadia near and long term. So if PS is going to cover Stadia, they might as well cover Apple Arcade as well.
Just checked, PS has had 7 Stadia articles, 1 Arcade. Maybe Apple is just a US thing? Or a New York thing, so I'm more focused on it.
@rjejr
I think in 'real life' terms of relatively normal people living normal lives - I don't know many people personally within the apple bubble.
Not to sound too harsh, but Apple devices are seen by the majority of my actual friends (who are mostly gamers of some ilk) as the 'idiots choice' of tech unless you're an artist - and even then, the architectural difference between Macs and PCs isn't really a thing anymore.
Believe it or not, if you were signed up to Dreamarena in PAL regions this game was free.
I remember minding my own business one day and got a package from Sega in the post, and inside was Chu Chu Rocket. Still one of the coolest surprises I ever received in the post.
it's out? safsf
@Churchy Yeah, I was going to buy it, and then got a free copy. Legendary times.
