Update: Global community lead for Cyberpunk 2077, Marcin Momot, has chimed in on the subject:
So, there we are. The game is almost entirely viewed from a first person perspective, but you'll be able to see your character in specific ways -- very occasionally in a cutscene. For immersion's sake, it makes sense to us.
Original Story: Cyberpunk 2077 is arguably the most anticipated game on the horizon, and for good reason. With each new glimpse at the sci-fi RPG, it's clear that CD Projekt RED is crafting something pretty special, and after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, expectations are sky high. However, a new tidbit of information has caused a bit of a stir. It seems that cutscenes, like the rest of the game, will be viewed from a first person perspective. This is contrary to what has been shown of the game so far, where we've seen cinematics play out in third person.
The news comes from a screenshot of direct messages between the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account and a fan. Asked if it's true that cutscenes will not be third person, CD Projekt RED said the following: "In Cyberpunk 2077, immersion is very important for us, so yes, cutscenes are [first person perspective]." Apparently, this will also include romance scenes.
The reaction to this has been pretty divisive, as fans have come to expect third person cutscenes based on some of the footage we've seen thus far. However, we should bear in mind that all we've seen of the game has been plastered with work-in-progress disclaimers, and that CDPR has been championing first person and immersion for Cyberpunk since the start.
What do you think about this? Would you prefer third person cutscenes in Cyberpunk 2077, or are you fine with first person? Are you not bothered either way? Tell us your views in the comments below.

😂 Well they will mabye release a vr patch later on.! (⌐▨_▨) that will be awesome!
ugh.. i am not fan of first person on games
Cue "if this game doesn't have third person it will flop" comments.
Look, I know some people prefer third person games, but let's not pretend first person titles are suddenly unpopular, or that Cyberpunk hasn't been made from the ground up to be a first person game.
Doesn't bother me at all.
Maybe they've done it due to demands on hardware performance.
Couldn't give a rats behind. Judge the game.
No third-person sex scenes?! No sale!!
Sorry was this ever even in doubt? Stop stoking this fire, it’s boring!!!
Disgraceful, I and untold billions demand isometric cutscenes!
Don't really care, but I'm tired of hearing that first person is so much more "immersive". Only in VR, but not on a regular screen.
@ShogunRok I just prefer 3rd person is that allowed. 😆
It’s not like there aren’t games where the 1st person mode is miles better than the 3rd person mode. Skyrim and Oblivion’s 3rd person modes were insanely janky looking because they were built from the ground up as 1st person games. This is CDPR with clear influences from the original Deus Ex, I have faith.
That does seem strange that they offer all these customizations but yet not much opportunity to see what you look like. I was fine with it been an fps for immersion sake and level design but I assumed they would be plenty of third person cutscenes. Not going to put me off the game (far from it) just seems a bit of an odd decision. Also first person sex scenes?! Good luck in trying not to make them cringey now lol.
In my opinion, this is the definition of a non-issue.
Bit disappointed personally as I generally don't like first person games but I can't argue with their vision and I appreciate them sticking to what they want to do rather than trying to please everyone.
so then what's to point if such a robust character customisation system if your barely going to even see your character?
of course it does make the story seem much more personal but it's still a waste of a system in my opinion
@Kidfried Or they have and they simply disagree.
@LemonHaze But they're talking about cutscenes. Obviously there's a character/model less to render. And they won't have to render all the different mods/augmentations that players will have.
From my point of view I vastly prefer third-person style games to first-person and some first-person games have made me feel ill (though strangely not all). So I would have greatly loved this game to have had a third-person option.
That being said I can understand their reasons and fully believe any creative venture should be made however the creators wish to make it. We can decide after if it’s for us.
I've taken to playing RDR2 single player in first person mode.
I play GT Sport, and any racing or driving game, from the driver's perspective (cockpit view) if available.
So I have no problem with a First Person-only player perspective in CyberPunk 2077. I'll gladly play it like that.
Ummmmmmm ok. I don't see the problem.
@Quintumply
Then why report if its a "non-issuse" as you say
so you can't see your own characters even in cutscenes? what is the point of character customisation then?
The thing that's bothering me is 1.) No one is talking about the lie they originally told awhile ago when someone had concerns over not seeing their character and they said "dont worry about it you'll see them in cutscene etc." And 2.) One of the main selling points I've seen is the deep customization options you have which now means absolutely nothing if I only see my character in an inventory menu or a mirror. Far as I'm concerned this one has kind of fallen off the map for me. I'll probably wait for a deep sale and pick it up then.
Eeeh i have a feeling this is gonna flop harder then a fat boy on doughnut table....... This will be 30$ by next black Friday.
Why include CaC when you barely see your character?
They might as well have created just a male and female lead to choose from.
Everyone should know this is a 1st person game by now. This is just a new angle on a old argument. I like 3rd person more myself but find after playing a good 1st person game for a while I forget about it being 1st person any way.
If you forgot let me remind you Cyberpunk 2077 is a 1st person game!
I prefer 3rd but being in 1st isn't going to stop this game from taking over my life.
@KnightWolf Because it's an interesting talking point that some people feel strongly about.
The Dishonored series is one of my favourites of all time but it isn't a full-fledged open world game and it doesn't offer character customisation so it's easy to overlook that. Cyberpunk on the other hand offers all that and more, and coming from Witcher 3 we can't deny it's a problem no matter how you look at it. I'm believing in that PS5 3rd person enhanced version more and more, looking at how Witcher 3 went on countless graphical overhauls.
its very obvious they dont want us to see if we are playing a male or female
@Quintumply
Its somehow contradictory though haha.
On the one hand 'interesting talking point that some people feel strongly about.'
On the other hand 'its a non issue' and people with 'strong feeling' will be looked down on.
Ill just keep my thoughts to myself (regarding the studio and the media reporting this) on the matter but hope people enjoy the game.
@JJ2 In my opinion, it's a non-issue. I'm not taking anything away from those that feel differently, and I'm certainly not looking down on anyone.
@Quintumply
Good to know.
As a 3rd ppov player, I have to laugh at those who complain about this. They gave us all who want 3rd ppov grief about wanting it etc. So I love watching them whine when they don't get what they want. We had to accept it so you better as well.
But why not forced 1st ppov in driving as well? Their vision of immersion is BS if they include 3rd ppov for driving but not for cutscenes or gameplay.
Honestly, this makes me lessed hyped. What's the point of even customizing a character then? To seem them in mirrors? Lol
Gamers: "Lol why are they pandering to moaning SJWs by letting you have transgender characters? People just like to complain!"
Same gamers: "No third person? This is an outrage"
I find first person perspective in games LESS immersive, unless it's in VR. It feels like looking through a tunnel, or like I'm wearing a box on my face, and it makes the sharp precise movements of the camera more jarringly inhuman. It's like a unique form of uncanny valley for me, and it totally pulls me out of the world because there's just no ignoring it.
I'm not arguing that Cyberpunk should have a 3rd person mode, or that it will fail without it, because come on, this game is going to be something special and it'll sell like gangbusters. But the perspective has certainly contributed to me sitting on the fence about it.
Honestly, more than adding 3rd person, if they really want to pursue immersion, I think the best thing would be to add full VR support down the line.
A FPP game being played in FPP throughout.
Im failing to see the issue here?
Who cares! We got Death Stranding in November. I know I'll be playing that game for the next 3 years straight. 😂 😂 😂
I suspect one main reason is that much of the story happens only within the player's head, such as when in the 'net' or when interacting with Johnny Silverhand. Another reason is that with the game having so many interior environments, it much tougher to find space for an external camera.
Makes absolutely no difference as far as I'm concerned, but it does make me wonder why they put all that effort into the character creation/modification section if you're only going to see 'yourself' for what sounds like less than 5% of the game.
@Rash seen the reviews and can confirm it's a banger of a game, have you?
I don't care either way.
While I usually prefer TPV over FPV, I care more about the quality of the game. What I disagree with is their statement that FPV is more immersive. As others said above, that's true only in VR.
In fact, if it's not implemented well, it might even be a jarring experience. That surely won't be a problem with CD Projekt Red. They'll handle it well, I'm sure, but I never felt like my POV had any influence on immersion. It relates only to gameplay IMHO.
Also, like many others said, what's the point of visual customization if you can't see your character? I hope the way you're dressed in the game will have some influence on dialogues and relationships with npcs, otherwise it will really be pointless.
But I have faith in CDPR. I don't think they'll screw it up
Great, another dumb thing for the internet to get bend out of shape about... Hey, that’s just more Cyberpunk for the rest of us.
I am more than ok with this myself, as it will give it a very different feel compared to their past games, they have already proven they make amazing games so I don't see why this one won't be amazing too
https://twitter.com/cyberpunkgame/status/1024003790628945920?lang=en they have not stuck to what they said in 2018 then & I disagree that FPV is more immersive. so all the customization is for what? & CDPR fanboys are becoming intolerable!
Who knows what else they will change in the name of "immersion ".
@LN78 Yes, I'm in Barbados, we had only a brief graze with Dorian last week when it was a Tropical Storm, no major damage thank goodness. I can't imagine what people in the Bahamas are going through now, I really wish the best for them.
Thanks for asking
Oh cool, was just wondering what the gamer outrage topic of the day was going to be, guess this is it /s.
These people seriously need to get a life, stop actively looking for things to be angry about. The world doesn't just bend to your every whim and wish
Huh, first person sex scenes. Nice. I haven't played many first person games because I don't really care for them. Having said that, this game sounds immersive enough that I won't care.
My favorite first person game is Dying Light. That game just sucked me right on in with it's music and gameplay. I feel like Cyberpunk will do the same. If they want a 3rd person RPG so bad, Greedfall is very nearly right around the corner.
If I'm being completely honest then I'd say I was a little disappointed that we won't get to see our character during every conversation but i guess I knew this from last year's gameplay demo.
The game is still going to blow my mind regardless.
I for one prefer 3rd person and I disagree that 1st person automatically equals immersion (seriously, it’s a pretty fudged up notion), but this is a total non-issue.
Not really sure why people feel entitled to ask for a 3rd person mode; just because The Witcher (another series) is? It’s ludicrous.
There was less backlash following the RE VII reveal lol
@badbob001 I think your second reason is spot on - about the interiors. I usually switch to 1st in Fallout4/Skyrim when I enter a building but then again I enjoy the view of my character's rare outfits when outside in 3rd. And seeing as the vehicles are in 3rd in this game then there's definitely wide open areas and not just Deus Ex-like clustered interiors. It's a miss on CDPR's part going 1st only, this is open world RPG not a 6 hour FPS campaign.
Why would anyone care if the cutscenes are first person?
"What about sex scenes?"
Oh, right. 😂😂😂
This game has been under the microscope since it’s reintroduction, and has been nit picked on a weekly basis.
Surely there isn’t a more certain tell tale sign of it being GOTY?
Well that's strange. Make a character but don't get to see the character at all...
I like first person cutscenes if they’re done right but I wonder, why the extensive character creation if we never see who we created? Doesn’t add up.
@LemonHaze
What article are we commenting on? I think this is a non-story either way. Probably will have plenty of in-game emergent first person cutscenes as well as plenty of 3rd person story/chapter cutscenes. Otherwise why have customization options at all?
@AdamNovice
They're going to piss off people on all sides of the argument with first person sex scenes. Looking forward to the reactions.
But on topic, the only thing this decision concerning everything being first person is confirm for me not to be too creative with my character design. Not a problem anyway, I like to start games up as soon as possible. I'll go with a simple, generic design (hopefully provided by the game so I don't have to waste time) and get started.
Dang... And here I was hoping for sidescrolling segments.
Not an issue really for me, but not bing able to see all the cusomization of your character is a bit weird.
It'd be cool if they added in third person cutscenes later as an option, but overall not too bothered by this.
