Another week, another first place finish for PlayStation software in Japan. Following on from Persona 5 Royal's impressive performance last week, Death Stranding has ascended to the summit of the latest sales charts according to Famitsu.
The PS4 exclusive moved around 186,000 physical copies, which was more than enough to secure the number one spot. Death Stranding landed in second place here in the UK, so it's clearly enjoying some initial success. We'll have to wait and see if Kojima's latest can keep it up, but we reckon Sony's got another hit on its hands here.

I said 2-3 mil launch period. Id imagine that'll hold true. I think lifetime 8-10.
@Nyne11Tyme I think it'd sell far less than that (8-10 LT). It seems like a front loaded game to me. People who aren't into it won't change their mind. So, word of mouth won't help it as much as some other games.
Hope I'm wrong, of course.
@naruball @Nyne11Tyme Metacritic has over 9000 user reviews as it stands which is significantly more than the recent Modern Warfare, so at the very least people are talking about it. I hope it's a game that'll continue to sell well as we really need some more imagination in the open world space
Actually looking at those figures, they're pretty impressive as it beat Luigi's Mansion 3 first week sales. I'm curious to see how well it did in the U.S.
@carlos82 Yes, people are talking about it, but like I said, the game's a tough sell.
Plus with all the zeros you can bet none of them is getting it. And the 10s are also of people who feel compelled to give it the top score to balance the troll reviews. With other games, even people who are enjoying e.g. Modern Warfare, they don't feel like posting a review.
@naruball definitely a lot of those won't be buying it and wouldn't have bought it regardless of what the game turned out to be. Even some of the tens haven't played it but more so than many games I can remember, this seems to be talked about a lot and I've seen several gaming channels with multiple videos about it. I'd imagine a lot of people will be on the fence about this game so that continued presence may well swing them.
We'll wait and see how it does overall but the early signs seem pretty positive
@naruball it could be. Holidays will really help i think with this title. Id imagine many are on the fence because its so polarizing. Revised estimate to 6-8😁. I believe it will surpass Bloodborne sales for sure. Id love to know the budget (development and payout to actors plus media push)
Very happy to see this doing well in its first week. I'd love to know digital numbers too. It bodes well for future Kojima collaborations with Sony. Do we have have US numbers?
Nearly finished the story, after about 30hrs. Might do a review on the forums.
I see this title selling 5+ millions to be a hit for Sony after all the money the invested. I see it happening and maybe this will motive Sony to acquire KP
@AdamNovice damn how did you finish that quick? I’m at 15 hours and just finished episode 2.
@Nyne11Tyme 8-10m? that is horizon and god of war territory. not a chance an odd, niche game like death stranding will get near those numbers, especially since it will underperform in its largest market — north america. death stranding likely won't surpass 4-5m copies. for all we know, that might be what sony anticipated for it to be a success anyways. just a mere two days after release, i saw a bunch of local sellers in my area trying to offload the game since they didn't enjoy it. it is as divisive as we all expected it to be and that will hurt its sales without a doubt.
@Porco i didnt say anything about regretting the purchase and trading lol. His name and the amount of perfect scores will carry the game. With the mocap talent and marketing budget its going to have to sell.
@Nyne11Tyme i am merely making a point... a lot of people are disappointed by the game. it will not be the kind of game that garners sales via word of mouth. i think your prediction is far fetched but we will see lots of average games get perfect scores these days so that really doesn't mean anything. the industry is just a hype machine with little in the way of honesty in many cases. although i have not played the game yet, i doubt it is a perfect score lol... i am very intrigued by the game, but my expectations are tempered now. i expect it to be a 7/10 experience if i am being honest and rational about it.
Persona royal and DS, I see japanese market has good taste in games
I need to stop help building roads and get on with the story, still on chapter 3 lol
@BarefootBowser
Doesn't mean anything at all, the majority of people, die hards to people who were on the fence are loving it and at still around chapter 2 or 3.
Not because of the slog or longevity but because they are enjoying the game by building roads, building bridges, delivering lost cargo, you lose track of time so fast in this game. I know one dude who has already 60 hours in the game and hes only on chapter 4, crazy.
@JayDub i second this completely. I’m barely on episode 4 but im at 43% trophy completion because the world is just so fun! It’s incredibly satisfying building roads and other constructions for others to use, and I love the fact that Kojima made it all about positivity with the “like” system. I should press on with the game but im having too much fun with the standard deliveries and doing the premium requirements.
Fascinating game, really. I’ve played games since the NES and I’ve never played a game like this before.
Good start in other regions, I'll be interested to see how it sold in North America when we get NPD reports next month.
@dark_knightmare2 Just finished it, took me 35 hours in total. I barely did any standard orders so that's one reason but I think I got a good grasp of the controls and the gameplay loop pretty quickly.
america hate this game cuz asian made it if he was white they will love it
@BarefootBowser dude chapter 3 is by far the longest chapter in the game and you could easily spend 20 plus hours in that chapter alone not to mention the game hasn’t even been out a week yet
@Porco idk the word of mouth seems pretty positive to me so far heck most of what I’m seeing is people playing the game and wondering how reviewers got so many things wrong
@dark_knightmare2 sounds like you are only reading positive sources to suit your own argument. here is an honest and credible reviewer and his thoughts on the game that many people agree with, particularly average gamers who have no idea what they are getting themselves into:
https://www.giantbomb.com/reviews/death-stranding-review/1900-795/
again, i am not taking sides as i have not played the game yet, but i am open enough to the idea not everyone enjoys death stranding and the game is quite divisive.
@Porco no dude I’m sorry it seems like you’re looking for the negative which is funny because people like you always bring up giant bomb like anyone truly cares. They are a website no one really talks or thinks about until recently with their death stranding hot takes. The game reviewed well with 83 on metacritic and 85 on opencritic and most of the threads on resetera like the OT are overwhelmingly positive. I never said everyone loves it there’s def people disappointed in it but from what I’ve been reading and seeing more seem really into it
