The nominees for next month's Game Awards, hosted by Geoff Keighley, have just been announced and it looks set to be a very big night for Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding. The PlayStation 4 console-exclusive has received nine nominations across a total of eight different categories, including the all-important Game of the Year prize.
Death Stranding is nominated for Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score/Music, Best Performance for both Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, Best Audio Design, Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Game Direction, and finally, Game of the Year.
Other titles that make up the Game of the Year category are Control, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Resident Evil 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and The Outer Worlds. That's not the only Sony-published title up for an award, however, as Blood & Truth could swoop the prize for Best VR Game. Apex Legends also features prominently in various multiplayer-focused categories. Expect it to do well at The Game Awards on 12th December too.

I do love DS and it’s an insane achievement so well deserved.
A remake, a walking simulator and a game released in 2018 are on there, but Devil May Cry 5 is not. Pathetic.
@Gamer83 Yes, calling DS a walking simulator is pretty pathetic.
@Gamer83 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is included because it didn't hit the cut-off date for The Game Awards 2018. It happens fairly often for games released in December.
DS for best graphics, performance (of f course), narrative, adventure, game direction, and game of the year 😃
I'm disappointed not to see Days Gone in the category best number 7 of the year.
Oh geez this is gonna be a 2 hour Kojima love fest isn't it. Not really surprising though.
It's going to win them all because Geoff is spineless
What can we expect in terms of new announcements?
I know Geoff is in Death Stranding, but genuine question. Does he actually get to decided what is nominated in each category?
I'm not saying that it doesnt deserve these noms... BUT... it is highly suspicious that Geoff Keighley is in the game and has basically been a walking Kojima advertisement for the last 3-5 years.
There needs to be some real clarity with regards to the results.
I havent played Death Stranding, I might someday but currently I dont have interest in it. But that being said I am not saying it doesnt deserve the awards, just that its suspicious.
A completely separate jury of media outlets decides on the nominees. Geoff Keighley doesn't have any impact on who is nominated.
Take out super smash and put devil may cry 5.word up son
@LiamCroft You could give a nod to Concrete Genie in the Games for Impact category.
@Arugula
Those games have a lot more going on when you're traversing the world than Death Stranding does.
And already people are dismissing DS's achievements because of the Geoff Keighley connection. I hope it wins GOTY not because I think it deserves it but I just know it'll wind some people up.
@homejsimpson He's been doing it for years, it's just what he does. No one else seems to be bothered but if it annoys you that much you could just ignore him. word up son.
Well deserved as far as I'm concerned despite the lazy "walking simulator" comments here and elsewhere. Its funny as I seem to be spending a lot of time driving, riding bikes, some stealth and engaging in combat with both human and non human enemies
@homejsimpson. Word up son.from new york.im the best.word up son.word up son.word up son
Days Gone not getting in one category is a joke.
@homejsimpson We don't tolerate haters of @playstation1995 round these parts. Word up son.
@Kai_ @BarefootBowser Geoff isn't the one that pick the winner.
I find it sad that for some people games have to be about killing people or it didn't count as games.
@homejsimpson, what's your problem with @playstation1995? That's his way of comment in this site it's like his signature.
The dude is a cool guy.
@wiiware, damn right about that. And i was a little skeptical when i saw some videos of DS at first because i preordered it. But when you play it, it's another story.
@Gamer83
If you’ve played DS, you know that there’s a lot going on the entire time you’re traversing the world. Not once in any of the other games mentioned did I need to worry about balance or uneven landscapes.
Outerworlds should have not got nominated for game of the year, the game is trash.
Of course it does. Kojima is Keighleys god.
@CB7Tuner91 Keighley doesn't have a say in who gets nominated, that's down to various media outlets.
Just realized that it's now 5 consecutive years that a PlayStation exclusive has been nominated for GOTY since TGA started.
Bloodborne 2015
Uncharted 4 A Thief's End 2016
Horizon: Zero Dawn 2017
God of War & Marvel's Spider-Man 2018
and now Death Stranding 2019.
And who would bet against TLOU2 been there next year?
Death Stranding all the way for me. Let the awards connect
Hopefully they add more categories for Death Stranding to win, 9 isn't nearly enough.
@Lobbo95 thanks for the support haha.theres always a hater somewhere.anyways why is devil may cry 5 not included in the game of the year categories.its a great game.word ☝ up son
@Orpheus79V. Cool profile pic.and thanks for the support.👍.theres always that hater somewhere.haha.word up son
@playstation1995, no problem word up son👍. And also agree with devil may cry 5 not being nominated goty, i love it.
I respect Kojima and what he has accomplished in Death Stranding. I really do! I love RE2 Remake and I'm sure I would love Outer Worlds when I get a copy.
But my GotY goes to Smash Ultimate. I love Smash to pieces, ever since I was a kid, and Ultimate is absolutely fantastic.
I hope Sekiro gets Game of the Year but can see it being Smash. I forgot that it only came out in December.
@BarefootBowser Geoff already said on twitter he isn't the one that pick the winner, it's a panel of journalist. It will be ridiculous if DS omitted from the award because of it.
My comment is aimed at everyone that think DS is just a walking sim and somehow is a less of a games compared to other type of games like shooter.
really? outer worlds? a walkin simulator with bland visual and dated gameplay with story and characters that has no personality at all
MHW didn't make the cut for "Best Multiplayer Game" and "Best Ongoing Game"?
Well earned, the game is a genuine masterpiece.
@Gamer83 you're crying about a remake, whilst you're profile pic is a Zelda remake.

@BarefootBowser Dude, the jury are people from 80 games websites, geoff himself is not a jury, whether you accept it or not, DS is a game of the year material, there's no conspiracy, just accept it and move on lol.
Smash/fire emblem/sekiro/re2r isn't going to win goty, all a great games but not game of the year material, too casual, too niche, too hard, just a remake, a goty is a game that push the industry forward, and that 4 games is aint it chief.
It is a fantastic game. Well deserved.
The list in general is why I own a PS4... I played most of them on it. Another good year for gaming.
Death Stranding all the way, put over 60 hours into the game so far and have reached a point in the story that makes me want to press on but the addictive gameplay has me going back to do side content, conflicted but don't want it to end yet so I'll go rebuild more roads and erect a fabulous zip-line system.
It is unfair to call Death Stranding just a walking simulator. It's a Monster Energy drink walking simulator.
I’m a little surprised that Control got as much love as it did (which if I count correctly got 8 nominations). I’ve not played it, nor am I inclined to play it because of the reports of a completely confusing storyline, a fair number of significant technical problems, and very uninspired mundane looking environments. Everyone seems to like the gameplay but having heard what I have, ‘Best Narrative’ and ‘Best Art Direction’ are a surprise.
Slow year, maybe?
I think that Death Stranding will win everything that it can win, because... because... well, because it's a Hideo Kojima game that is cool to like. (it doesn't mean that I don't think that a lot people really like the game).
But in time, the amount of Death Strandings we'll find for sell in second hand will tell a different story.
@Th3solution
Control was great, defiantly one of the best of the year just nobody bought it. Death Stranding deserves to win a lot of awards especially how stunning it is and how well it runs. Especially when you’ve got a zip line network setup and fly round the world really fast it barely has any pop ins or stuttering
@oldschool1987
It's not 'crying.' Resident Evil 2 is my favorite game of all-time, love the remake and had that as my profile pic for most of this year but that has nothing to do with what I think should win Game of the Year so it's ridiculous to even go there. I've always been of the belief remakes shouldn't get Game of the Year, and since your'e so worried about it that includes Link's Awakening. I haven't posted anywhere that I think that game should get a nomination, either.
@Th3solution
Control is a great game. Story's not really that confusing, gameplay is fun, environments I guess can be hit or miss. And some got confused by the map. It's a worth a play if you've liked past Remedy games.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk @Gamer83 Good to hear about Control. Maybe I’m getting a skewed view of the narrative from my sources. With my enormous backlog it may be a while, but sounds like it should be included on my list of future gaming endeavors.
Kojima's is part of the advisory board.
Good for Death Stranding.
Honestly, I only watch the Game Awards for the World Exclusive announcements.
Can anyone tell me if control has been patched was very interested in the game but heard it was broken at launch so havent got round to getting it. Days gone should defo have been on game of year list really enjoyed it bought it on a whim with no expectations and really enjoyed it although story did take a dip in the middle but really fun, the first time you encouter a horde was intense.
And looking at the comments above the reason why game awards are stupid compared to movies or music is to actually play these behemothic games you need to be playing them as a full time job.
I don't like smash brothers as it's just smash Bros like we got 15 years ago. But again that's unfair as I've played it for 3 hours tops so my opinion isn't valid.
Apex legends was good and fresh, but it was about as deep as a baby swimming pool. Again maybe 3 hours tops. It's not a valid opinion.
Death Stranding I'm sat on 22 hours and think it's fantastic. My opinion is valid, looking at some of the comments people are making and wonder if they are stupid or in actual fact Have Not played the game at all. Saying its a walking simulator is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard In the same way someone saying Minecraft is a walking simulator or Grand Theft Auto is a walking simulation. If you were one of the first people to play the game would have been strange - however jumping in now and the world has been built up. Bikes, trucks, guns, grenades, nukes etc.
